The 2013 Annual Meeting of the Association of Professional Engineers of the Province of Prince Edward Island was held at the Loyalist Lakeview Resort in Summerside, PEI, on Friday, November 29, 2013. There were 62 members and guests in attendance. 1.0 Call to Order and Welcome

President Richard MacEwen, P.Eng., called the meeting to order at 9:30 am by welcoming everyone to the 2013 Annu-al Meeting. He introduced the Council members and extended a warm welcome to the special guests from other engi-neering associations. He encouraged the Association members to take the opportunity to share ideas with the guests. He also acknowledged the sponsors of the Annual Meeting.

Richard acknowledged that one member of Engineers PEI passed away this year and asked for a moment of silence in memory of W. Stuart Veale, FEC, P.Eng.

1.1 Changes to the Agenda Richard noted that since the Agenda is set out in our By-Laws, there is no requirement of formal approval of the Agen-da. There were no additions from the floor.

2.0 Minutes of the 2012 Annual Meeting:

Richard asked if there were errors in or omissions from the minutes of the 2012 Annual Meeting. No errors or omis-sions were noted. He called for the approval of the minutes. It was moved by Jody MacLeod, P.Eng., and seconded by Don MacEwen, FEC, P.Eng., that the minutes be ap-proved as presented. Motion carried.

3.0 Business Arising from Minutes There was no business arising from the minutes. Vice President Sean Wheeler, P.Eng., took the chair while President Richard MacEwen, P.Eng., presented his report.

4.1 President’s Report President Richard MacEwen, P.Eng., spoke about his past year as President and the honour that came with being President of Engineers PEI.

He noted that his time as President was a year full of new ventures for Engineers PEI. He noted that Engineers PEI held its first MLA Reception in early November. He noted that it was well attended by MLAs. Richard reported on the Engineers PEI FIRST Lego League. He noted that we are working to help capture the imagi-nation and ingenuity of PEI’s next generation of Engineers. He noted that all UPEI Engineering Students are encour-aged to join the Association as Student Members, and that many are signed up. Richard noted that the Association is busy working on important issues, such as a Province-wide adoption of the Na-tional Building Code. Richard noted that the newly formed Women in Engineering Committee is hard at work, tackling the issue of under-representation of women in engineering. He encouraged the Membership to consider how we can collectively encour-age female role models and their participation in leadership roles. Richard reported that, even though Engineers PEI Membership represents less than 1% of the 140,000 Professional Engineers registered in Canada, our achievements are significant and our ability to influence the profession nationally far outweighs our numbers. He noted that we are members of a great Profession and encouraged all members to consider how they can make the Profession even better.


In closing, Richard congratulated Sean as the incoming President. He noted that Sean will represent Engineers PEI well.

It was moved by Greg Gaudet, P.Eng that the President’s report be received. Report received. President Richard MacEwen, P.Eng., resumed chairing the meeting.

5.0 Executive Director’s Report

Executive Director Jim Landrigan, P.Eng., referred to his report as outlined in the Annual Report. Jim noted that it has been a busy year for the Association. He noted that the year began with a pipe burst in the office at the end of January. He noted that no critical documents were affected and the resulting repairs were covered under the insurance policy. Jim noted that he attended four CEO group meetings throughout the year. He reported that one of the main issues that the CEO Group is dealing with is the development of a Canadian Framework for Licensure. Jim reported that he attended the NCEES conference in San Antonio, Texas, with support from Engineers Canada. He noted that Patty Mamola, P.E. is the first woman to hold the position of President of NCEES since it was founded in 1920. Jim thanked Kim for her hard work during the past year. He thanked President Richard MacEwen and Council mem-bers for their support during the year. Jim thanked Joanne for her support and assistance over the past year. He noted that Joanne was a key volunteer/supporter to the success of the many events held throughout the year.

It was moved by Gerry Stewart, P.Eng., that the Executive Director’s Report be received. Report received.

6.0 Registrar’s Report

Executive Director Jim Landrigan, P.Eng., referred to his written Registrar’s Report. He noted that this was a good year, exceeding our expectations in membership. He noted that there was a 11% increase in membership over the past year. He noted that more graduates are registering for the EIT Program, growing 21% over the past year. Cur-rently, the Association has 259 Members, 19 Honorary Life Members, 24 Retired Members, 105 Engineers-In-Training and 268 Licensees for a total of 675. He noted one member was deceased. He noted one EIT was removed due to non-payment of dues or non-compliance with the PD Program.

It was moved by Greg Gaudet, P.Eng., that the Registrar’s Report be received. Report received.

7.0 Treasurer’s Report

The audited financial statements dated October 31, 2013 were presented by Treasurer Jim Landrigan, P.Eng. He not-ed that a surplus was recorded due to increase in memberships and funds set aside for the 2014 Fund. He noted that more was spent on travel than expected. He noted that more scholarships were given to children of Engineers PEI Members as well.

It was moved by Richard Gabbey, P.Eng., that the Treasurer’s Report be received. Report received.


8.0 Engineers Canada Director’s Report

Engineers Canada Director Darrell Fisher, FEC, P.Eng. noted that his detailed report can be found in the Annual Re-port.

Darrell noted that this is his final year of a three-year term as Engineers Canada Director, and this will be his last AGM as the Engineers Canada Director. He noted that the three years have gone very quickly and has been a wonderful experience.

Darrell noted that he sits on various committees at the National level. He noted that Engineers Canada works to sup-port constituent associations to advance the Engineering profession and their self-regulation in the public interest.

Darrell reported that consistency among the constituent associations’ regulatory standards and practices to protect and serve the public interest is the highest priority of Engineers Canada’s Ends.

Darrell noted that Engineers Canada is moving forward to develop an online competency-based assessment tool. The Competency-Based Assessment System for Engineering Work Experience will help to ensure that the Canadian Public can rely on engineering expertise, abilities and experience.

Darrell encouraged the membership to read through his report and welcomed any questions.

It was moved by Joshua Collins, P.Eng., that the Engineers Canada Director’s Report be received. Report

received.

9.0 Committee Reports

Since the annual reports had been posted to Engineers PEI’s website prior to the meeting, the reports presented by committee chairpersons were brief. All of the reports were approved by a single motion following the presentation.

9.1 Act Enforcement

Act Enforcement Committee Chair Ed Power, P.Eng. referred the membership to his written report.

Ed noted that during the year the Act Enforcement Committee dealt with five complaints submitted to the Association. He noted four of the complaints were successfully resolved, and that one complaint was concluded yesterday.

Ed reported that he attended Engineers Canada’s Annual National Discipline and Enforcement meeting in May. He noted topics discussed included the Charbonneau Commission, and an update on the Elliot Lake Inquiry.

Ed noted that after many years on the Committee, Foch McNally resigned as Act Enforcement Officer. He also noted that Frank Callaghan, FEC, P.Eng., resigned from the Committee after volunteering for many years. Ed welcomed new Act Enforcement Officer, Foster Millar, P.Eng. He noted that Kerry Taylor, P.Eng., also joined the Committee this past year.

Ed thanked the Committee members for their hard work during the year.

9.2 Advocacy Committee

Chair Richard MacEwen, P.Eng., referred the membership to his written report. He noted that the Committee has the mandate to inform the public of the relevance and value of the Engineering profession, to inform the public and others of the Association’s role in regulating the profession in PEI and in providing services to its Members, and to raise the

profile of the Association and the Engineering profession.


Richard noted that during the past year the Committee has worked hard to develop Association Position Statements for informing the public of the benefits of hiring a Professional Engineer, importance of placing Limitations on Liability, province-wide adoption of the National Building Code and the benefits of developing a Long-Term Infrastructure Plan.

Richard reported that the first Engineers PEI MLA Reception was held to discuss the importance of working together to make PEI an even greater Province.

Richard thanked the Committee members for their hard work over the past year.

9.3 Annual General Meeting Committee

Chair Richard MacEwen, P.Eng., thanked Committee members Jim Landrigan, Sean Wheeler, John Greenan, Joanne Landrigan, Heather MacEwen and Kim Levesque.

Richard noted that the Come From Away dinner last night was well-attended. Richard noted that Stephane Bilodeau, ing, Vice President of Public Affairs at OIQ, will be the guest speaker at the Luncheon. Richard noted that the Long Service Awards will be presented at the Luncheon.

Richard noted that the Guest Speaker for the Awards Banquet will be David Saint-Jacques, Canadian Space Agency Astronaut. He noted that the Singing Strings will be providing entertainment throughout the evening.

9.4 Awards Committee

Chair Justin Dunn, P.Eng. directed the membership to his report in the Annual Report. Justin thanked all members for submitting quality nominations for the awards being presented this evening. Justin noted that six awards will be pre-sented this evening: the Engineering Award for Excellence; Award for Engineering Achievement; Young Engineer Achievement Award; Community Service Award; the Ralph L. Woodside Memorial Award for Service to the Profession; and the Friend of the Profession Award. Justin noted that Richard Farmer, FEC, P.Eng., and Foch McNally, P.Eng., will be receiving Honorary Life Membership as well.

Justin, on behalf of the Committee, congratulated those receiving long-service awards at the Engineers Luncheon. Justin noted that a full list of award recipients can be found in his report.

Justin encouraged all members to think of nominations throughout the year.

9.5 Construction & Consulting Committee

Chair John Greenan, P.Eng. referred the membership to the written report. John noted that the Committee continued to work on some outstanding issues from the previous year. He noted that, as members of the Construction Associa-tion Bid Depository Committee, the Committee attended a number of openings throughout the year.

He noted that joint meetings were held between Engineers PEI, the Construction Association and the Architects Asso-ciation. He noted that meetings were held to discuss common issues such as quality of work/plans, consistency of awarding tenders, contract administration, and phasing of projects.

John reported that the Committee is currently reviewing the present guidelines for the use of the seal and, in particular, how electronic seals are to be regulated.

John reported that Engineers PEI has a representative on the PEI Building Standard Council. He noted that the Coun-cil is working on the implementation of the PEI “Provincial Building Code Act”. He noted that a draft of the Building Code Act Regulations was completed in the summer by the PEI Building Standard Council and submitted to the gov-ernment lawyer/Legislative Reviewer.

In closing, John thanked the Committee members for their commitment over the past year.


9.6 Engineering Qualification Committee

Jim Landrigan, P.Eng., Executive Director, reported on behalf of Committee Chair Nazmi Lawen, FEC, P.Eng. He not-ed that the mandate of the Committee is to review and verify documentation presented by applicants for the purpose of obtaining a Certificate of Registration, Licence to Practise or enrolment in the EIT program.

He noted that all candidates for P.Eng. registration are interviewed. Jim reported that the Committee interviewed many candidates over the past year.

Jim reported that the Committee met throughout the year to review and discuss policies and practice from other juris-dictions, to ensure conformity in the application review process as well as the requirements for Canadian work experi-ence.

At approximately 11:00 am, President Sean Wheeler, P.Eng., suspended the meeting for a nutrition break and at ap-proximately 11:15 a.m. reopened the meeting.

9.7 Environment Committee

Chair David Taylor, P.Eng., presented the report on behalf of the Environment Committee.

David noted that the Engineers PEI Council re-established the Environment Committee this past year. He noted that it was previously part of the Student Outreach & Environment Committee.

David reported that the mandate of the Committee is to advise on emerging issues related to the environment, promote engineers unique qualifications and standards of practice to environmental services and to facilitate the communication of information to the engineering profession and other professions working in the environment industry on the roles and practice standards of engineers in the environment field. He noted that the Committee also works with the other Engi-neers PEI Committees, other organizations and associations to collaborate and share information.

He noted that the Committee met a number of times throughout the past year to discuss environmental issues and op-portunities to integrate environmental awareness and sustainability into Engineers PEI. He noted that the Committee reviewed and commented on the World Federation of Engineering Organizations Code of Practice on Sustainable De-velopment and Environmental Stewardship. He noted that comments were forwarded to Engineers Canada for consid-eration.

David thanked the Committee members for their hard work over the past year.

9.8 Experience Review Board & EIT Committee

Darrell Fisher, FEC, P.Eng. reported on behalf of Chair Ron LeBlanc, FEC, P.Eng. He noted that the objective of the Experience Review Board is to support EITs as they work toward applying for Membership as a Professional Engineer.

Darrell noted that the Experience Review Board reviewed twenty-six logbook submissions throughout the year, com-pared to sixteen the previous year.

He noted that there were two EIT information sessions were hosted by the EIT Committee. He noted that the sessions are held to explain the various requirements of the EIT Program and to provide guidance with respect to logbook rec-ords. Darrell noted that the sessions were hosted by Ron, Mark Victor, FEC, P.Eng., and Jim Landrigan, P.Eng.

9.9 Nominating Committee

Chair John Greenan, P.Eng. presented the nominations for the 2013 – 2014 Council and thanked the nominees for al-lowing their names to stand. He thanked the other committee members for their assistance.


John noted that the Nominating Committee received several nominations for awards, which Justin mentioned in the Awards Committee report.

In closing, John thanked the Committee members and Kim for organizing meetings.

9.10 Student Outreach Committee

Chair Libby Osgood, P.Eng. reported that the mandate of the Student Outreach Committee was updated to focus on the promotion of engineering to students at all levels, from primary through to university.

She noted that the Committee met twice to discuss how to engage students and inform them about engineering. Libby noted that the most exciting development from the Committee was the creation of an Engineers PEI Robotics Club for youth aged 9 – 14. She noted that three Lego EV3 robots were purchased and Engineers PEI sponsored one team to participate in the First Lego League Competition in Truro, which is being held on November 30

th.

Libby noted that the Bridge Building and Artwork Contest was very well attended, as was the UPEI Career Night.

She noted that Engineers PEI has good presence at all UPEI Engineering events, including the UPEI Engineering De-sign Expo, where a $1000.00 award is presented to the best design project of 2

nd year engineering students.

Libby noted that one of the goals of the Student Outreach Committee is to visit all schools across Prince Edward Is-land to promote the engineering profession.

Libby encouraged the Membership to read through the report, found in the Engineers PEI Annual Report.

9.10 Professional Development and Continuing Education Committee

Chair Adam Clark, P.Eng., presented the Professional Development and Continuing Education Committee report.

Adam noted that 2013 was a successful year, in that there was a good mixture of Lunch & Learn sessions and Tech-nical Tours. He noted that there were three Lunch & Learn Sessions throughout the year and three Technical Tours. He noted that there are a number of upcoming sessions that are currently in the works.

He noted that the Project Management Workshop in May was well attended. Adam encouraged the membership to attend the Technical Tours taking place at Slemon Park as part of the AGM.

Adam noted that the PD Program is a mandatory component of the annual membership renewal process for all Mem-bers, Licensees and EITs. Three Members and three Licensees were randomly selected for audit in 2013. All docu-mentation was reviewed by the Committee and it was determined that all were in compliance with the PD Program.

Adam thanked the Committee members for their work during the past year.

9.12 Social Committee

Chair Sean Wheeler, P.Eng., thanked the Committee members for their contribution during the past year. Sean noted the annual Engineers PEI Christmas Skate was held on December 9

th and that there were approximately 20 in attend-

ance.

He noted that the annual Engineers PEI/Engineering Students Hockey Game took place on March 7th at UPEI, fol-

lowed by a social at ISE’s.


Sean reported that 260 people attended the Annual Lobster Supper held on June 22nd

at the North Shore Community Centre. He noted that the Annual Golf Tournament took place on Friday, September 6

th at Fox Meadow Golf and

Country Club, with 54 players taking part in the event.

Sean noted a number of social events took place at the Association Office, including an open house on December 20th,

New Years’ Day Levee, and Volunteer Appreciation Night on March 27th. He noted that all events were well attended.

Sean thanked Jim, Joanne and Amanda for their help in organizing the social events that were held at the office.

9.13 Women in Engineering Committee

John Greenan, P.Eng., reported on behalf of Chair Christine MacKinnon, FEC, P.Eng.

John noted that this was the first year for this Committee. He noted that Engineers Canada has a goal to achieve a national licensure rate of 30% of newly licensed engineers to be women by the year 2030. He noted that Engineers PEI is committed to this goal.

John noted that the mandate of the Committee is to monitor and work to increase the participation of women in engi-neering with respect to recruitment, retention and equity; to provide information, advice and recommendations on wom-en in engineering issues for consideration by Council; to lead Engineers PEI’s work to support the national initiative of 30 by 30 and actions in support of the Engineers Canada action plan; and to participate in outreach, development activ-ities, research initiatives and collaborate with like-minded groups within and external to Engineers PEI.

John reported that the Committee hosted a networking luncheon in April at the Association Office to begin a dialogue about women in engineering and ways to improve the profession for all engineers.

He noted that in the coming year, the Committee will explore the interest in a formal one-on-one mentorship program and professional development workshops.

It was moved by Terry Murphy, P.Eng. that the Committee Reports be received. Reports received.

10.0 Ratification of Actions of Council

It was moved by Stephen Yeo, P.Eng., and seconded by Jody MacLeod, P.Eng., that the annual meeting ratify

the actions of Council during the past year. Motion carried.

11.0 Scrutineers Report

Executive Director Jim Landrigan, P.Eng. handed to President Richard MacEwen, P.Eng. the sealed envelope from the Scrutineers. The President then read the results of the election vote. Ninety-six ballots were cast (33% of eligible vot-ers). There were no spoiled ballots.

The results were as follows:

Councillor: Greg Gaudet, P.Eng.

Councillor: Jason Lindsay, P.Eng.


12.0 Disposal of the Ballots

It was moved by Don Gillis, P.Eng., and seconded by Jody MacLeod, P.Eng., that the ballots be destroyed.

Motion carried.

13.0 Installation of New Officers

The two new elected Councillors were invited to sit at the head table. Jason Lindsay and Greg Gaudet joined the head table.

13.1 Incoming President’s Remarks

Incoming President Sean Wheeler, P.Eng., thanked and recognized the volunteers that make Engineers PEI possi-ble.

He noted that 2013 was a good year for Engineers PEI, especially with the announcement of a full Engineering De-gree Program at UPEI and the first MLA Reception.

Sean noted that the present success of Engineers PEI would not have been possible without the leadership of out-going President Richard MacEwen, P.Eng. He noted that Richard has been very active in promoting the Association to the general public, as well as at the National level, as well as assisting the Committees with their activities through-out the year. Sean thank Richard, Engineers PEI staff and all volunteers for a good year.

Sean noted that he sincerely accepts the important role of President of Engineers PEI. He noted that, with the strong support of the Engineers PEI Council, we will work towards improving the community among members and strength-ening relationships with the public and strategic partners.

Sean encouraged all members to be active in educating the public on the role of Professional Engineers, thus assur-ing the protection of public interest and improving quality of life.

14.0 Election of the 2013-2014 Nominating Committee

A call was made for two members to join the Past President in forming the 2013-2014 Nominating Committee.

It was moved by Stephen Yeo, P.Eng., and seconded by Terry Murphy, P.Eng. that Jody MacLeod, P.Eng. and Don MacEwen, FEC, P.Eng., be approved as members of the 2013 -2014 Nominating Committee. Motion car-

ried.

15.0 Proposed Budget for 2013 – 2014

Incoming President Sean Wheeler, P.Eng. presented the proposed budget for 2013 - 2014.

He noted that the proposed budget is comparable to the previous year.

It was moved by Don MacEwen, FEC, P.Eng. and seconded by Joshua Collins, P.Eng. that the proposed

budget be approved. Motion carried.


16.0 Appointment of Auditor

It was moved by Stephen Pigott, P.Eng., and seconded by Don Gillis, FEC, P.Eng., that Carl Herring, C.A. be

appointed as the Association’s auditor for the upcoming year. Motion carried.

17.0 New Business

No new business was introduced.

18.0 Closing

There being no further business, President Richard MacEwen, P.Eng. announced the closing of the meeting at 11:40 am.

At various times throughout the meeting, President Richard MacEwen, P.Eng., invited the Presidents of the Associa-tions, or their representatives, to offer a few words of greetings.

Engineers Canada President Jim Beckett, FEC, P.Eng. thanked the Association for the opportunity to address its mem-bership. Jim described the role of Engineers Canada.

He noted that as part of their policy governance, Engineers Canada’s Board has the important role of providing strate-gic vision to the Engineering profession. He noted that the primary End is for Engineers Canada to exist in support of the constituent Associations, to advance the Engineering profession and its self-regulation in the public interest at a cost that is justified by the results.

He noted that Engineers Canada is proactively developing programs and publications that aim to help Engineers prac-tise ethically and professionally. He noted this is of special importance due to recent increases in the number of com-plaints related to ethical issues and professionalism.

In closing Jim thanked Darrell Fisher, FEC, P.Eng., for his years as Engineers Canada Director for Engineers PEI. He thanked Richard for his contributions over the past year, and wished incoming President Sean Wheeler the best.

19.2 Greetings from APEGNB

Engineers and Geoscientists New Brunswick (APEGNB) President Mark Bellefleur, P.Eng. thanked President Richard MacEwen, P.Eng. for the invitation to attend the Annual Meeting.

Mark noted that APEGNB currently has 5500 Members. He noted that APEGNB Council held a strategic planning meeting in Moncton where a number of important issues were reviewed. Issues included the Association’s completed risk assessment report, the Continued Competency Program and the upcoming APEGNB 100

th anniversary celebra-

tions in 2020.

He noted that in September, APEGNB held a special meeting of members to review the proposed changes to the Engi-neering and Geoscience Professions Act. He noted that the main issue discussed was the proposed addition of a clause permitting a limited license to Engineering Technologists. He noted that their Membership will be given the


opportunity to learn more about limited licensure and whether or not it will be included in the proposed new Act at the APEGNB AGM in February.

In closing, Mark congratulated Richard MacEwen, P.Eng. on his past year as President and congratulated incoming President Sean Wheeler, P.Eng.

19.3 Greetings from PEO

Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Past President Denis Dixon, FEC, P.Eng. brought greetings on behalf of Presi-dent Annette Bergeron, P.Eng. He noted it was a pleasure to attend others Association’s meetings to speak with other engineers.

He noted that it has been a busy year for PEO. He noted that PEO was invited as an expert to participate in the Elliot Lake Commission of Inquiry’s policy roundtable on the role of professionals and other consultants, which took place on November 20

th and 21

st.

Denis reported that PEO Council, at its September meeting, authorized the PSC (Professional Standards Committee) to develop a guideline on structural engineering assessments of existing buildings and other structures. He noted that the PSC is now recruiting a subcommittee of practitioners to work on the documents, which will involve consulting with prac-titioners and other parties, including members of the public affected by professional engineers carrying out this kind of work.

Denis noted that PEO has opened investigations into what part, if any, the conduct of its license and certificate holders might have played a part in the tragedy.

In closing, Denis congratulated incoming President Sean Wheeler, and wished him luck in the upcoming year.

19.4 Greetings from Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador

PEGNL President Sean LaCour, FEC, P.Eng. thanked President Richard MacEwen, P.Eng. for the invitation to partici-pate in the Annual Meeting.

Sean noted that PEGNL is governed by a 12-member Board of Directors, whose goals address the ethical and compe-tent practice of Engineering and Geoscience, as well as public confidence in these professions.

Sean reported that, since the implementation of the revised Engineers and Geoscientists Act, PEGNL has established processes to enable it to offer two new categories of licensure and membership. He noted that the introduction of the limited licence is working well for the Association. He noted that the introduction of this licence required significant revi-sions to PEGNL’s registration guidelines and establishing a Limited License Assessment Committee.

He noted that PEGNL’s membership is continuing to increase. He noted that membership growth for 2011 and 2012 was 12% both years.

In closing Sean congratulated incoming President Richard MacEwen and welcomed Sean Wheeler, incoming President.

19.5 Greetings from Engineers Nova Scotia

Engineers Nova Scotia President Jeff Knapp, P.Eng., thanked President Richard MacEwen, P.Eng, and the Association for the invitation to the AGM. He congratulated Engineers PEI on a successful year.

He noted that Engineers Nova Scotia’s AGM was held in September. He noted that membership continues to grow and that there are currently 6000 members.


He noted that the Code of Ethics has been updated. He noted that the Women in Engineering Committee has imple-mented a new award, the Award for Advancement of Women in Engineering, with its first recipient being Past President Sarah Devereaux, P.Eng.

Jeff congratulated Sean Wheeler, P.Eng., incoming President and thanked outgoing President Richard MacEwen, P.Eng., for his efforts over the past year.

19.6 Greetings from APEGA

Colin Yeo, P.Geo., President of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta thanked Presi-dent Richard MacEwen, P.Eng. for the invitation to the AGM. He noted that he was happy to be back, after exploring the Island for the first time last year.

Colin noted that APEGA currently has 72,000 members and received approximately 10,000 applications for licensure this year. He noted that this continues a growth trend that began over five years ago, and their compounded annual growth rate is 13%. He noted that this growth rate is driven by Alberta’s booming economy.

Colin reported that the APEGA Council has set four priorities to focus on. The first is to update and modernize the Engi-neering and Geoscience Professions Act. The second is to assist policy-makers in setting public policy and informing and engaging the public in important discussions about their future choices and options as Alberta grows and develops. He noted that the third priority addresses the need to attract, retain and advance their professional members. He noted that the fourth priority is organizational renewal. He noted that CEO Mark Flint is making great strides in aligning staff to their regulatory and strategic directions, increasing efficiency and effectiveness. He noted that a new Registrar will be joining in December and that there are many internal changes continuing to be made.

In closing, Colin thanked outgoing President Richard MacEwen for his leadership roles in revitalizing the Presidents Group meetings held at Engineers Canada. He noted that Richard has been instrumental in holding Engineers Canada accountable for delivering reports and initiatives at the national level that benefit everyone. He congratulated incoming President Sean Wheeler and noted that he is looking forward to working with him.

19.7 Greetings from ACEC

Jody MacLeod, P.Eng., Director of the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies Canada and PEI brought an update on their behalf. Jody noted that this year has been an eventful one in Quebec. He noted that the allegations of bribery, kickbacks, and secret meetings, revealed during the Charbonneau Inquiry is hitting the industry and profession hard. He noted that AICQ (Association des ingénieurs-conseils du Québec) is projecting a 30-40% reduction in member-ship dues from Quebec engineering firms as a result of the current economic and political climate. He noted that there is increasing questions with respect to transparency and integrity within the profession.

Jody reported that he attended ACEC’s Parliament Hill Day in October. He noted that this is an opportunity for the Na-tional Board of Directors to meet with parliamentarians to talk about important issues with respect to the engineering in-dustry. He noted that all meetings were positive.

Jody noted that, in his opinion, the most important issue facing the industry and profession is commoditization of engi-neering services. He noted that the services traditionally provided by engineers are continually being removed from our scope of services and given to accountants, management consultants, procurement departments and lawyers. He noted that low fee based procurement is driving the quality of construction documents down and taking the innovation and val-ue for services out of the engineering industry. He noted that this has resulted in the undervaluing of work that engineers do and a widespread misconception that engineering work does not add value to projects. To help offset this, Jody not-ed that ACEC has a full suite of standard professional services contracts.

He noted that on the local front, ACEC PEI and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal have signed an agreement, addressing engineering fees and various-sized projects, that are based on the fee guidelines pub-lished by Engineers PEI. He noted that ACEC PEI has also been consulted on numerous issues affecting consulting engineering on PEI. He noted that ACEC PEI regularly meets with the Construction Association, Road Builders and Ar-chitects.



President

The 2014 Annual General Meeting is now upon us and my term as President of Engineers PEI has come to an end. As I expected, the past year was a busy one for me as well as for Engineers PEI staff, Council and the many volunteers that we rely upon so heavily to get things done. To close out my term, I will highlight a few of the issues that we were involved with over the past twelve months.

Advocacy

Advocacy has been a focal point during my term as President of Engineers PEI. This year we have taken the time to have another successful MLA re-ception, providing us with the opportunity to ex-press the need for changes to the current acts and regulations governing limitation of liability, the need for province wide adoption of the national building code, infrastructure investment, and the benefits of working with professional engineers. In February we resurrected the annual sit-down with the Prem-ier and his Chief of Staff, where we promoted the development of K-12 Science, Technology, Engi-neering and Math programs, the UPEI Engineering Degree Program, links of Engineering and Entre-preneurship, job creation and Infrastructure plan-ning.

Act and Bylaws

During my term, we were faced with a recommen-dation from the Act Enforcement Committee to refer a complaint to Provincial Court. The case was the first successful defense of the Engineering Act and Bylaws. After this case we had provided an educa-tion session to our members on our Act, Bylaws

and Code of Ethics. We also initiated a new Act and Bylaw committee to review the scope and for-

mat of the existing regulations and propose amend-ments.

UPEI School of Engineering

The University of Prince Edward Island has made sub-stantial strides in the development of a full Engineering Degree program. The Council’s input and assistance has been solicited throughout the year. Due to the great work of President Alaa Abd-El-Aziz and the Fac-ulty at UPEI, the program has moved the program for-ward, exceeding expectations. The ground for a new building to house the program is being broken Novem-ber 28

th and the 2014-2015 first year engineering class

is expected to be the first Cohort graduating with a Batchelor of Science in Engineering from the Universi-ty of Prince Edward Island.

Observations

One of the benefits of being President of Engineers PEI is the opportunity to interact regularly with repre-sentatives of Engineers Canada and the other Constit-uent Associations. This interaction is great for sharing ideas and discussing common issues, but it also rein-forces the fact that while Engineers PEI may be small on a relative scale, we have the same core responsibil-ities as our counterparts in the larger provinces. For this reason, it is especially important for Engineers PEI to foster and sustain an active and engaged member-ship.

rience has been above and beyond what I anticipated and I can honestly say that since being elected to Council back in 2010, I have gained a new appreciation for the engineering profession and the importance of Engineers PEI as our col-lective voice at both the local and national level. We are fortunate as a group to have a dedicated staff carrying out the day to day business of the organization and a large number of volunteers that contribute countless hours to the various committees and events that we would otherwise not be able to sustain year after year. On this basis, I am confi-dent that Engineers PEI is in good hands and I look forward to my continued involvement in the years to come in what-ever capacity I can best serve. Executive Director

This has been another exciting and busy year for us. In addition to the normal activities we also had to deal with issues regarding the court case mentioned in the Presi-dents report. During the year I attended four meetings of the Chief Executive Officers Group (CEO Group), which is the as-sembly of Executive Directors/Chief Executive Officers of the ten provinces, the Yukon Territory and the North-west Territories. The Educational Credential Assessment Project and the restart of the Canadian Framework for Regulation are among the main issues the CEO Group are addressing. I also attended meetings of the Canadian Engineering Qualifications Board, the National Admissions Officials Group and the Engineer in Training Group. The National Admissions Officials are working on a project to identify alternative routes to meeting the Canadian environment experience requirement.

Operational Improvements

This year we implemented a number of improvements to our processes. We can now accept payments on-line using PayPal. We are also sending out our invoices and renewals by e-mail. Electronic voting has been introduced, resulting in a more efficient method for the process of election of Council members. At 55%, Engineers PEI has one of the highest rates of return of all Engineering associations.

Committees

You will notice in the various committee reports that this has been a very busy year. Several important items were addressed, including mentoring and a joint brochure with the Architects.

NCEES

In August, with the support of Engineers Canada, I attend-ed the NCEES conference in Seattle, Washington. NCEES (the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing professional licensure for engineers and survey-ors in the United States. During the past year NCEES completed the transition of the FE exam to computer-based testing. At the conference the delegates voted to suspend the requirement for a master’s degree in engineering as the entry level education require-ment. I wish to thank Kim Levesque, President Sean Wheeler , Council Members and our volunteers for their support dur-ing the year. It was a pleasure to work with you! In particu-lar, Kim was instrumental in carrying out the operational improvements mentioned in this report.

Also, I would like to thank my wife Joanne for her continued assistance as she was a key volunteer/supporter for Engi-neers PEI and contributed to the success of many our events held this year.

Engineers Canada Director

Engineers Canada is the national organization of the provincial and territorial associations that regulate the practice of engineering in Canada and license the coun-try's 270,000 members of the engineering profession. The primary emphasis is to advance the competency, integrity and public accountability of the engineering pro-fession, and is committed to providing effective national coordination and a strong national voice for the profes-sion in collaboration with its constituent associations. Engineers Canada has been focused on better aligning the execution of its work with the goals of the regulatory bodies. As a result, Kathryn Sutherland, P.Eng., FEC, LL.B., was appointed as Vice-President of Regulatory Affairs, and Guy Legault, MBA, FCPA, FCGA, CAE, as Vice-President of Business Development and Services. This realignment will enhance the collaboration with the constituent associations across the profession. In addition to adopting a new governance policy for Engi-neers Canada, there is a significant amount of work be-ing carried out by several boards and committees. The following is a brief list of some of the activities: Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board: The Ac-creditation Board made accreditation decisions on 50 programs at 16 higher education institutions at its May/June meeting, and on 10 programs at seven institutions at its September meeting. Decisions regarding one sub-stantial equivalency visit to three programs at a universi-ty outside of Canada were also made at the September meeting. Canadian Engineering Qualifications Board: A work-ing group made up of Engineers Canada Board repre-sentatives, which includes myself, and Board Director from Alberta Dick Walters, FEC, P.Eng., and the Qualifi-cations Board executive, was established to consider a

series of issues for the Qualifications Board surround-ing relationships, reporting structures and priorities. The working group will report back to the Engineers Canada Board in February 2015. Public Confidence in the Profession: Engineers Can-ada is continually working with its members to promote the profession as a valuable resource and raise its profile among government decision-makers in the interest of protecting Canadians. The federal government needs to address the public in-terest concerns of the engineering profession and use the expertise of the engineering profession when making policy decisions. Engineers Canada demonstrates how engineers can contribute to public policy development on such issues as infrastructure and climate change; immi-gration and foreign credentials; and research and devel-opment. Contact Day on the Hill: On November 4, I joined the other members of Engineers Canada’s Bridging Govern-ment and Engineers Committee on Parliament Hill to talk with members of Parliament about Engineers Canada’s priorities. It was a very successful day, with 28 meetings held with members of Parliament from coast to coast, including meetings with parliamentary secretaries, chairs and vice-chairs of many House of Commons standing commit-tees. The focus of our discussions was the content of the En-gineers Canada’s Pre-Budget Submission and the im-portance of having engineers involved in public policy and protecting the public. They also highlighted the need for the government to help municipalities build capacity to properly assess infrastructure projects to improve their

resilience in the face of changing climate. This day marked a great opportunity to highlight the many of the great projects and publications Engineers Canada has contributed to. The Act Enforcement committee had a relatively busy year.

Our investigation into the complaint involving the Riverhouse Inn hotel project in Montague was completed in December 2013. It was determined that the building contractor, namely Southern Kings Construction Ltd. proceeded to erect the building without using the services of professional engineers for the design of the building. As a result, our committee recommended to Council that prosecution of the contractor be initiated as stipulated in the Engineering Profession Act.

In February, 2014 our committee dealt with a complaint filed by a contractor who alleged that a violation of the Code of Ethics was committed by an engineering firm who failed to pay the contractor for contract work completed on a building project. In the end, the committee concluded that the specific section of the Code of Ethics was not violated.

In addition to the above our committee investigated other cases that were referred to it by the Executive Director.

These cases which were not received as official complaints included a potential concern that engineering design services were not being provided for a building project. Also, our committee investigated reports of structural failures of privately owned wind turbine towers.

In the area of National Discipline and Enforcement activities, I attended the annual meeting of the Engineers Canada National Discipline and Enforcement officials in May. The main items on the agenda included the annual national survey on discipline and enforcement cases in each jurisdiction, an update on the Charbonneau Commission of Inquiry in Quebec, an update on the Elliot Lake Mall Collapse Inquiry and round table discussion on the activities of each Association.

Finally, I would like to thank the committee members for their dedication and work on committee activities during the year.

During the past year, the Committee has continuously updated the Engineers PEI Website Facebook page and Twitter account improving the connectedness of the Association with Members and the public. Committee members have worked to develop association position statements for informing the public of the benefits of hiring a Professional Engineer, importance of placing Limitations on Liability, the adoption of the National

Building Code Province Wide and the benefits of developing a Long-Term Infrastructure Plan. Engineers PEI hosted a reception for Political Leaders of PEI to discuss the importance of working together on Infrastructure Investment, National Building Code, Limitations of Liability, and what it means to be a P.Eng. Thank you to those who have helped with the advocacy committee. I encourage everyone of us to be advocates for our Profession.

The AGM committee met several times to plan the arrangements for this year’s event. The 2014 Annual General Meeting will be held at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel on Kent Street on November 28, 2014. On Thursday evening, the Association will host a dinner for our out of town guests. Council members and their companions will be joined by representatives from the other Provincial Associations and Engineers Canada.

The program of events for the 2014 AGM will begin with the General Meeting of members on Friday morning.

The traditional Companions Program will also be held Friday morning, including a sampling of wines, beverages, cheese and treats.

The Engineers PEI Luncheon will follow the AGM and will include a presentation by Mr. John Rowe, Founder and President of Island Abbey Foods Ltd.

Awards will be presented to members that have 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 & 50 years of dedicated service to the profession.

Committee Meeting

Joint meetings were held between Engineers PEI, Association of Architects and the Construction Association to discuss common issues which included the quality of work/plans, consistency of awarding tenders, phasing of projects, and contract administration.

Guideline for Use of Professional Seal

The Committee is reviewing the present guidelines for the use of the seal and in particular how electronic seals are to be regulated.

The Committee is reviewing the present guidelines and fee structures.

Provincial Building Code Act

Engineers PEI have a member representative Nazmi Lawen on the PEI Building Standard Council. The Council is continuing to working with departmental representatives on the implementation of the PEI “Provincial Building Code Act”.

Joint Practice Committee

The Joint Practice Committee, a committee made of members from Engineers PEI and The Architects Association of PEI have meet over the last year to discuss and collaborate on common issues. The Committee has prepared a joint information brochure called the “Island Building Resource” to assist municipalities, developers, builders and the public determine when and if an Architect and/or Engineer is required for a building project by using a simple table. The brochure intent is to ensure quality work, consistent standards and the safety of the public.

EIT Committee

The objective of the EIT Committee is to support our

Engineers in Training as they work toward applying for

Membership as a Professional Engineer.

Over the past year, EIT information sessions were

hosted by the EIT Committee to explain the various

requirements of the EIT program and to provide

guidance concerning logbook records, the Professional

Practice Exam and application to the Engineering

Qualifications Committee. The sessions, which

typically occur in the Spring and Fall of the year, consist

of a formal presentation followed by a question and

answer period. The information sessions were put on

by the Chairperson of the Committee as well as Mark

Victor (Past President of Engineers PEI), Jim Landrigan

(Executive Director of Engineers PEI) and Darrell

Fisher.

Experience Review Board

The Experience Review Board is now in its ninth year of

operation. In all there have been 14 submissions this past

year compared to 28 the prior year.

The Experience Review Board offers a logbook review and

constructive criticism mechanism to all EIT’s to facilitate the

transition from EIT to P.Eng.; it provides review and

feedback to ensure that the EIT is demonstrating relevant,

progressive experience and that the submissions are

formatted in a manner consistent with the EIT Guideline

recommendations.

The mandate of the Engineering Qualifications Committee is to review and verify documentation presented by candidates for the purpose of obtaining a certificate of registration, licence to practice or admittance as an engineer-in-training. The Qualifications Committee may also prescribe and conduct exams to confirm candidates’ abilities in engineering theory and professional practice. Based on thorough review of applications and interviews, the Committee report and make recommendation to Council.

The Committee generally reviewed applications to ensure applicants wrote and passed the National Professional Practice Exam, log books completed in accordance with the requirements, conducted interviews with each candidate to ensure competency and conformance, requirements for Canadian work experience, and verified references. In addition, the Committee generally discuss and review policies and practices from other jurisdictions to ensure confirmatory in the application review process.

Over the past year the Committee has reviewed a number of applications for registration from EITs (Engineers-in-

Training) and others. The Committee is pleased to note that the applicants experience and training covered a wide range of engineering disciplines.

This year the registration department at APEGA took on the role of preparing academic assessments for Internationally

Educated Graduates who apply to Engineers PEI. APEGA has completed the review of three applicants to date.

On behalf of the Qualification Committee, myself and the Executive Director keep up to date with Assessment Techniques in other jurisdictions to confirm that our assessment requirements and standards for engineering licensure in Canada are consistent with other Provincial Engineering Associations, for the purpose of enhancing the safety of the public, allowing for mobility of all registrants and facilitating the transition and movement of individuals during the assessment process.

In addition, Jim attended the National Admission Officials Group meeting held in Toronto in June of 2014. He also attended the International Engineering Academic Qualifications Committee and Canadian Engineering Qualifications Board meetings held in Vancouver this September.

The registration statistics for the past year are provided in the Registrar’s report.

The mandate of the committee is to advise on emerging issues related to the environment, promote engineer’s unique qualifications and standards of practice to environmental services and to facilitate the communication of information to the engineering profession and other professions working in the environmental industry on the roles and practice standards of engineers in the environment field. The committee also works with other committees, other organizations and associations to collaborate and share information, ideas and strategies regarding environmental issues. The committee met on roughly a monthly basis to discuss environmental issues and opportunities to integrate environmental awareness and sustainability into Engineers PEI. The committee oversaw an energy audit of the Engineers PEI office performed by an On-the-Job (OJT) training student from Holland College’s Energy Systems Engineering Technology program. Recommendations from the audit were reviewed by the committee and sent to council for approval and implementation. The committee reviewed a number of guides and guidelines from other jurisdictions over the year. These included the Canadian Engineering Qualifications Board – National Guideline on Environment and Sustainability and the Model Guide – Principles of Climate Change

Adaptation for Professional Engineers. The committee also discussed NRCAN’s Building Energy Modeling Software – CAN-Quest, which is a Canadian adaptation of the popular US building energy simulation software eQUEST. Engineers PEI continued its participation in Engineers Canada’s national forum Environment and Sustainability Officials Group. This forum provides an opportunity to share information and best practices with other engineering organizations across Canada. An evaluation of this group was conducted by Engineers Canada as part of their review of programming. The committee provided feedback to Engineer’s Canada as part of this review. The committee reviewed a request for feedback on a proposed project, titled Developing a Decision Key on Planning and Engineering Guidance for the Selection of Sustainable Coastal Adaptation Strategies to Climate Change in Rural Communities, which seeks to develop guidance documents and tools for rural communities looking to make appropriate adaptation decisions in coastal areas. The project is a partnership that includes the Atlantic Canadian Provinces. The committee suggested to council that an ad hoc review committee with expertise in the area be developed to provide appropriate feedback. As Chair of the Environment Committee I would like to thank the committee members and others who have offered their time, ideas and efforts to promoting environmental sustainability and the role engineering plays in society. The Professional Development Program is a mandatory component of the annual membership renewal process for all Members, Licensees and Engineers-in-Training. In 2014, six members/licensees were randomly selected for audit. Each of the audited was asked to provide backup documentation to their PD Activity Summary by way of the standardized Activity Detail forms. The forms were reviewed by members of the committee and it was determined that all of the audited members/licensees were in compliance with the mandatory Professional Development Program.

I believe that the committee succeeded in 2014 to bring forward interesting content and provide our members many opportunities to attend CE sessions, learn and socialize with other members. I would like to thank the committee members and all the other members and non-members that have helped us host CE sessions in 2014.

The Social Committee met several times over this past year to plan the various events. Overall, the events were very well attended by the membership.

The MacLauchlan Arena on March 14th was where the

annual Engineers vs. UPEI Engineering Students hockey game took place as part National Engineering Month activities. Thankfully the engineers won the game. There was a great turn out with both students that played or watched attending the social event at ISE’s after the game. This venue provided an opportunity for students to chat with professional engineers in a relaxed atmosphere.

The Annual Lobster Supper held on June 14th was a

success again this year with the venue being at capacity. The Knights of Columbus continue to provide excellent service at the North Shore Community Centre. This event is booked and ready to go for next year.

The Fall Golf Tournament was held on Friday, September 5

th, at Glasgow Hills Resort and Golf Club. We changed

courses from the past couple of years where it was held at Fox Meadow. The course was in great condition and the weather was hard to beat. There were a total of 56 players that attended the event. We had a couple of golfers from APEGNB this year, but there were no UPEI Engineering students and only one female golfer. We have identified the lack of engineering students and female members as an area to focus on in improving this event. There were many door prizes handed out and we wish to thank the many companies who donated prizes.

The Annual Family Christmas Skate is planned for Sunday December 7

th at MacLauchlan Arena in

Charlottetown from 1:30-2:30 pm. This skate will be for the membership but advertised through CARI as open to the public and sponsored by Engineers PEI. Hot Chocolate and treats will be provided.

Without our dedicated committee members these events could not happen. Kim has been a huge factor in coordinating the success of these events.

The mandate of the Student Outreach Committee is to promote engineering to students at all levels, from Primary school through University. Two meetings were held to discuss the ways to engage students and inform them about engineering. In the last year, over 1,000 students from Kindergarten through University were connected to of the committee’s events, through the classroom presentations, science retreat, robotics club, bridge-building competition, and career night.

The Engineers PEI Robotics club for 9-14 year old students started its second season. Eighty students have participated in the club’s biweekly meetings since the club began, with 30 students regularly attending at each meeting. Students have learned about robotic theory, practiced engineering design, and built and programmed

Lego NXT 2.0 and EV3 robots. The mentors and coaches for the club include Engineers PEI members, student members, and UPEI faculty. Engineers PEI provided financial support for one tournament team to attend the First lego League’s regional Truro competition. At the 2013 competition held on Nov 30

th,

the team won the Project Award, one of only 5 awards given out at the competition. The club then held a provincial competition in May 2014 where 4 teams programmed robots to complete the most challenges in a set time. Some of the students were asked to put together a presentation to educated audience members at Summerside’s Spirit of Chautauqua. In the 2014 season, two tournament teams attended the First Lego League regional competition in Truro. Many thanks are due to the professional members of Engineers PEI and university students who volunteer in the club.

The 19th Annual Bridge Building & Artwork Contest was held on March 7th at the Charlottetown Mall to challenge over 140 students to practice engineering design. Matthew Crozier, a grade 12 student at KISH, broke the previous record also held by him. His bridge held over 500 pounds of maximum load! There were many wonderful entries in the artwork contest. “Let’s Talk Science” was at the event again this year. A $500 scholarship is available to the grade 12 winner of the competition, if he or she plans to pursue an engineering degree.

The annual engineering career night at UPEI was well attended by more than 30 students (about 30% of the diploma program at UPEI). Someshwar Singh, Christine MacKinnon, and Jim Landrigan gave informative and interesting presentations along the theme of the focus areas for the new UPEI Sustainable Design Engineering Degree: Renewable Energy, Bio-resource, and Mechatronics.

At the UPEI annual Design Exposition, Engineers PEI provided a $1000 scholarship to the winning second-year design team, a charcoal press for villagers in rural areas of Kenya, represented by Mikinduri Children of Hope. The team consisted of Daniel Larsen, Keilah Bias, Alex Gamble, and Spencer Montgomery. An award of $100 in the form of a gift card was presented to the winning first-year design team: Marc Thibodeau, Saheed Alastishe, Amy Andrews, and Brent Simmons. Engineers PEI has also increased its financial support of the exposition and student scholarships.

The teachers convention was attended by Joanne Landrigan, Tanya Pater, EIT, and Kim Levesque to advertise the services Engineers PEI offers to teachers, including classroom presentations. There were presentations made to classes from Kindergarten to Grade 12 by multiple members of Engineers PEI. The Lego EV3 robots will be used in future classroom presentations.

There were presentations made to promote the profession to classes from Kindergarten to Grade 12 by multiple members of Engineers PEI at the following schools: Somerset Elementary, Westwood, West Kent, all 10 English high schools, a home-school group, Abegweit Youth Group, and the UPEI Aboriginal camp. More than 700 students were in attendance at the presentations which included an introduction to the Lego EV3 robots.

The Student Outreach Committee teamed up with the Women in Engineering Committee to host 52 girls in grades 7-9 at a ‘Girls Get WISE Science Retreat held at UPEI. The aim of the camp was to expose the girls to hands-on science activities and careers, which included designing water filters in the Engineers without Borders ‘Water for the World’ classroom project.

This upcoming year, the student outreach committee hopes to see more students through their events than the year before and would like to create a pool of speakers to visit more classrooms as well as expand the robotics club. Thank you to the commitment of the volunteers and committee members who participated in the Bridge-Building competition, speakers at career night, Robotics club volunteers, the university students who regularly participate, and Engineers PEI staff.

Women in Engineering Committee:

Engineers Canada has a stated goal to achieve a national licensure rate of 30 percent women by the year 2030. Currently, there are 49 women (EITs and Members) registered in PEI, or 12% of our members. Engineers PEI is committed to this goal and created the Women in Engineering Committee. The mandate is:

to monitor and work to increase the participation of women in engineering with respect to recruitment, retention, and equity;

to provide information, advice, and recommendations on women in engineering issues for consideration by the Engineers PEI Council;

to lead the Engineers PEI work to support the national goal of 30 by 30, and actions in support of the Engineers Canada action plan; and,

to participate in outreach, development activities, research initiatives and collaborate with like-minded groups both within and external to Engineers PEI.

The committee members have been active:

Spoke to 30 girls at Career Day (November) at Colonel Gray High School

Hosted a Women in Engineering networking luncheon (March) as part of National Engineering Month. About 30 people attended including UPEI engineering students, and Hon. Valerie Docherty, Minister responsible for the status of women.

Provided funding and leadership for Girls Get WISE Science Retreat (May) for 52 junior high girls, in collaboration with WISE Atlantic, UPEI and ITAP. There

was very positive feedback from parents and girls, and media coverage on CBC and in the Guardian. The committee is planning to host a girls science camp again next year.

Met with Dr. Franz-Odendaal, NSERC Chair (Atlantic) for Women in Science and Engineering to discuss further opportunities for collaboration, and participated in WISE Atlantic regional teleconferences.

Attended “Open Opportunities: Mentoring the Future”- Canadian conference for women in engineering, science, trades and technology (May). This included an Atlantic speed networking event. The next CCWESTT conference will be in Ottawa in 2016.

Drafted and proposed a formal mentoring program for Council consideration (June)

Attended the public presentation of the Bold Vision members (September); arranged a lunch with Margaret-Ann Armour after the conference;
