February, 2013Period 1The Psychoanalytic Theory:H A M L E T

The definition and dynamics of personality development which underlie and guide psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

First laid out bysigmund, psychoanalytic theory has undergone many refinements since his work Psychoanalytic theory came to full prominence as a critical force in the last third of the twentieth century as part of the flow of critical discourse after the 1960s.What is the psychoanalytic theory?

Many of the characters are plagued with psychological disorders that ultimately lead to their demise. So what?

There was a kingdom called Denmark, whose

king was murdered by his brother, cunningly.

He came to his son, hamlet, to avenge his death,

Thus, HAMLET was left alone and crazed.

Hamlet, enraged, with a heart to do so,

Set forth to commit the tragic murders of those

Both hated and loved; gave way to

The untimely death of all those involved. P r o l o g u e

Delusions, HALLUCINATIONS,disorganized speechdisorganized behavior, and the so-called negative symptoms:Lack of emotional expressionLack of interest or enthusiasmSeeming lack of interest in the worldSpeech difficulties and abnormalitiesHmm.. Hamlet does have schizophrenia

E X P L A N A T I O NAs evident, Hamlet is one of the only characters who can see his fathers ghost. Not only that, but he can also communicate with him.Given this, it is possible that Hamlet has been having hallucinations about his father, thus categorizing him as a schizophrenic character.

B I p o la r I t yBipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) causes serious shifts in mood, energy, thinking, and behaviorfrom the highs of mania on one extreme, to the lows of depression on the other.

MISCONCEPTIONSPeople with bipolar disorder cant get better or lead a normal life.People with bipolar disorder swing back and forth between mania and depression.

bipolaritySYMPTOMS:

Feeling hopeless, sad, or empty, Inability to experience pleasure.Feelings of worthlessness or guiltThoughts of death or suicide

E X P L A N A T I O NIn the famous To Be or Not To Be soliloquy that has been muchoverused, lies Hamlets most dramatic example of a bipolar disorder. Hamlet has a dilemma between living and dying, in which he express many feelings that back up his desire for each thought. Hamlet has these Feelings simultaneously, thus categorizing him as bipolar.

D e p r e s s I o n ACT IV.V.196-205(pp. 219)ACT I.II.68-86(pp. 26-27)

D E P R E S S I O Na normal reaction to loss, life's struggles, or an injured self-esteem.

SYMPTOMSFeelings of helplessness and hopelessnessUnexplained aches and painsUnusual preoccupation with death or dying.Expressing strong feelings of hopelessness or being trapped

E X PL A N A T I O NAS IT IS MADE CLEAR BY HAMLET HIMSELF, HIS MAIN CAUSE OF DEPRESSION IS THE LOSS OFHIS FATHER.

AS FOR OPHELIA, THE DEATH OF HER FATHER IS ONE OF THE MAIN CAUSES OF HER DEPRESSION. THIS IS ESPECIALLY VISIBLE WHEN SHE SINGS THE SONG THEN DISAPPEARS AND IS KNOWN TO BE DROWNED IN THE SAME ACT AND SCENE
