STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Holy Scripture, the Word of God, is filled with so much meaning for us each and every week, if we only listen carefully and absorb what we are being told. In the last verse of today’s First Reading we hear, “Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.” It is speaking of Sts. Peter and John who traveled to Samaria to more or less confirm those who had been baptized there.

In fact, most historians believe that the laying on of hands in the New Testament is the origin of the Sacrament of Confirmation. In the Apostolic Constitution on the Sacrament of Confirmation Pope Paul VI affirmed that laying on of hands in the sacrament of confirmation continues the grace of Pentecost (on Sunday, June 4 this year).

If you have been confirmed, you have experienced the “laying on of hands.” That means the Holy Spirit has been called to bless, sanctify, transform, and give grace to you. You have received the Holy Spirit, which is the ongoing life of the Church. You have been anointed with the Spirit of God. That means you have been called to not only live out that Spirit, but also to live a life which shares that Spirit with your parish and with others.

When the priest or Bishop imposes hands, it is called epiclesis, a Greek word that means “invocation.” The “laying on of hands” is an important part of the ordination of priests and deacons. St. Paul reminded us all in his First Letter to Timothy, “Do not neglect the gift you have, which was conferred on you through the prophetic word with the imposition of hands.”

St. James Mental Health Prayer and Support Group

Thursday, May 25th at 7:00pm The right response to unexplained tragedy is not “grin and bear it.” Lamentations 2:19 says, "Arise, cry aloud in the night at the beginning of the night watches; pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord.

Come share what is going on in your life. A prayer support group is an important resource for family and friends of a loved one afflicted with a brain disorder (mental illness). It is a source of comfort, hope and support, of information and life improvement. Coming together in prayer and sharing lived experiences can be refreshing and inspire new hope and strength. Our next meeting is Thursday, May 25, 7:00pm in the Social Room. If you have a loved one with a mental illness please join us! For more information call: Marie at (760)845-9033, [email protected] or Sandy at (858)729-8522, [email protected]

“Jesus awaits us in this sacrament of the Eucharist. Let us not refuse the time to go meet Him in adoration, in contemplation full of faith, and open to making amends for the serious offenses and crimes of the world. Let our adoration never cease.” St. Pope John Paul II.

Please sign up to spend an hour on Thursdays with Jesus. Call Grace (858) 755-0613 or email [email protected]

All are welcome to join the Rosary group any Monday 6pm in the chapel behind the Altar.

Eucharistic Adoration

How would you like to save a life? The mobile unit of the San Diego Blood Bank will be at St. James today Sunday, May 21, from 7:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. to receive blood donations. Bringing it close to home, we have had several parishioners whose lives have been saved by blood transfusions, and over the years we’ve been doing it, your donations have saved over 9,000 lives. Remember: people are the only source -- there is no substitute. And only 3% of Americans ever donate blood. If you've never given blood before, now is the time to start. Let’s give them a big turnout! Right after Mass, walk up to the parking lot between the Hall and the School.

Please place items in a bag marked “Get on the Bus” and leave them under the table at the back of the church or drop them off at the Parish Office.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org
