Jews approach the New Yearand the Day of Atonement with afair degree of realism. Inherent inour prayers to escape the ills towhich the human race is subjectedis the knowledge that during theyear which has passed few of ushave been spared the tragedieswhich are an inevitable part oflife’s journey. In the understand-ing that pain and suffering afflictus all we face the future with morethan a little foreboding.
If a sense of uneasiness isunderstandable in our personallives, it is also reflected in ourresponse to the dark blots whichaffect our fellow Jews and, indeed, all of mankind: the deprivation andwant which have killed hundredsof thousands and which show nosign of abating; the persistentdanger of terrorism; the harrowingthought that there are diabolicalmen, removed from complete sani-t y , w h o a c t u a l l y r e l i s h t h e
prospect of a nuclear holocaust. The lack of even a modicum ofcompassion among so many can-not help but leave us fraught withanxiety,
“God’s in His Heaven andall’s right with the world” may bethe comfortable message ofPippa’s Song. And many sermonsduring the High Holy Days willlikely dwell on the ultimate com-passion of the Holy One, blessedbe His name. But the fact is thatif there are solutions to the prob-lems which plague our uneasy, insecure, troubled universe, if thealleviation of personal pain is atall possible, it will be “we” whowill have to discover the reme-dies.
Perhaps our prayers shouldbe not for divine intervention butrather for the strength we requireto face life’s perils and thecourage we must summon up toconfront our many enemies.

MAKING THE ARIEL UNIVERSITY CENTER Israel’s eighth university has been the subject ofmuch controversy since the Council for HigherEducation in Judea and Samaria voted to grantuniversity status to the Center. The new universitywould be Israel’s first beyond the Green Line andwhile right wing Israelis have called the decision“historic” those on the left worry about the interna-tional repercussions. Nor were the heads ofIsrael’s other seven universities supportive of thedecision. Spokespersons for these universitiesargued that granting AUC university status would“seriously harm and fragment Israeli higher edu-cation”. The final decision rested with the militarycommander who takes his orders from DefenceMinister Ehud Barak. Barak delayed his decisionbut the cabinet has now approved Ariel’s status asa university. Ariel has around 13,000 students, 5percent of whom are Arabs. Eighty-five percent ofthe students live within the Green Line.
Odom Brandman, aChabad rabbi, argued in awritten submission that “itis unfair t o a n y c h i l d
to be put under this kind ofpressure and to do some-thing unnatural to theirsoul.”

Conversion to
Christianity Allowed
A British judge hasallowed a 10-year-oldJewish girl to convert toChristianity despite hermother’s determined oppo-sition.
The parents, whosenames have been withheld, were both Jewish at thetime of the child’s birth. They divorced in 2010,agreeing on a custodyarrangement for the girl andher younger brother.
Shortly after thedivorce the father convertedto Christianity and that’swhen the problems began. The husband, apparentlywith the full support of thedaughter, wanted the childto be baptized. The mothermaintained that her childhad been “brainwashed”and sought to have thecourt prevent the baptismuntil she was 16. Thefather countered thatdespite the conversion hedid not intend to negate hischildren’s “Jewish heritageand culture”.
In his ruling JudgeJohn Platt, wrote:”My job isto decide simply what is bestfor you and I have decidedthat the best thing for you isthat you are allowed to startyour baptism classes assoon as they can bearranged and that you arebaptised as a Christian assoon as your minister feelsyou are ready.” The judgeadded that ”even after youare baptised you are stillfree to change your mindabout your faith when youare older”. The judge didrule that the girl’s confirma-tion should not take placebefore her 16th birthdayand not without her moth-er’s consent.

tary on August 4 byReverend Lawrence Pusheejustifying terrorism againstthe Israeli Olympians at the72’ Munich games,Canada’s most read dailynewspaper saw its respect-ed news platform exploitedby a protagonist who seeksto demonize and vilify Jewsand the State of Israel.
Responding to a Stareditorial which had taken aprincipled stance in callingon the InternationalOlympic Committee (IOC) tohold a moment of silence atthe opening ceremonies inmemory of the murderedIsraeli athletes and coacheskilled by Palestinian terror-ists, Rev. Pushee abhorrent-ly declared the following:“That was indeed a horribleand shocking moment forthe international communi-ty and such an observancewould be welcomed by mostof us, but only if it were abalanced time for remem-bering. The Palestinianassassins targeted Israelisbecause for decades theirpeople had been assassinat-ed by Israeli agents andmembers of its occupationforces. Munich didn’t justhappen out of the blue. Toremember the loss atMunich and not rememberthe suffering of thePalestinians would be tocontinue the untruth thatIsrael is the constant vic-tim.”
In other words,Pushee was claiming thatwhile the cold-blooded mur-der of these Israeli civilianswas bad, they essentiallyhad it coming to them in somuch as Israeli security
forces had allegedly killedPalestinians. Why TorontoStar editors elected to pub-lish a commentary justify-ing terror against innocentsis bewildering.
To wit, would theToronto Star dare publish aletter marking the 9/11 ter-ror attacks arguing that themurder of close to 3,000innocent people by Al Qaedawas understandable givenU.S. foreign policy in theMiddle East? Would the Starpublish a letter that sympa-thized with TimothyMcVeigh for his role in carrying out the Oklahoma CityBombing that killed 168people and injured over 800people? Would the Star pub-lish a letter that excused

The Rooseveltadministration's abandon-ment of European Jewryduring the Holocaust hasbeen well documented. Yetthe one meaningful actionthe U.S. did take to help theJews has received surpris-ingly little attention. Arecent Yad Vashem sympo-sium on Holocaust rescuerRaoul Wallenberg presenteda golden opportunity to cor-rect that omission.
August 4 markedthe 100th anniversary of thebirth of Wallenberg, thecourageous young Swedewho helped rescue tens ofthousands of Jews inGerman-occupied Budapestin 1944-45. At the YadVashem symposium thissummer, speaker afterspeaker --historians, diplo-mats, Wallenberg relatives--appropriately lauded hisheroism. But the importantquestion of how Wallenberg
ended up in Budapest wasbarely even mentioned.
The reason the infor-mation is important is thatit sheds light on how ahandful of rescue advocatesin the United States man-aged to bring about thereversal of PresidentFranklin D. Roosevelt's no-rescue policy. And surelythe greatest tribute toWallenberg would be ifyoung people today were tobecome inspired by theactivists of the 1940s toundertake their own effortsagainst contemporary geno-cide.
In 1943, Jewishactivists led by futureKnesset Member Hillel Kook(using the pseudonym"Peter Bergson") establishedthe Emergency Committeeto Save the Jewish People ofEurope. They sponsoredprotest rallies and morethan 200 full-page newspa-per ads, mobilized 400 rab-bis to march to the WhiteHouse, and lobbied vigor-ously on Capitol Hill forU.S. action to rescueEurope's Jews. Theseefforts, combined withbehind the scenes pressureby Treasury SecretaryHenry Morgenthau, Jr. andhis staff, convincedPresident Roosevelt toestablish a U.S. governmentrescue agency, called theWar Refugee Board (WRB).
At the time, editori-als in the Washington Postand Christian ScienceMonitor explicitly creditedthe Bergson Group for thecreation of the WRB. AndSecretary Morgenthau, in a

It was the WRB'srepresentative in Swedenwho persuaded Wallenbergto go to German-occupied
Budapest and helped payfor his rescue mission there. The courageous andresourceful Wallenbergdesigned a Swedish protec-tive passport and distrib-uted thousands of them toJews in Budapest, to pre-vent the Germans fromdeporting them. During the first GulfWar in 1991, Israelis walkedthe streets toting a squarebrown box. Schoolgirls evendecorated their boxes withstickers and drawings.Inside the boxes were a gasmask and an atropinesyringe in case of nerve gas.
But soon after thewar, Israeli authorities saidmany of the gas masks hadpassed their expirationdates and were no longereffective. Residents wereasked to return the masksand told they would bereplaced. But in most cases, the replacements nevercame.
Today, as fightingspreads throughout Syria,Israeli officials are con-cerned that Syria’s chemicalweapons stocks could fallinto the wrong hands andpose a threat to Israel. Theydo not believe that SyrianPresident Bashar Al-Assadwould use chemicalweapons against his ownpeople, or even againstIsrael, but radical groupssuch as Hizbullah or Al-Qa’ida have expressed keen

Currently, onlyabout half of Israelis havegas masks. A military offi-cial told The Media Line thatIsrael is producing gasmasks at a rate of 40,000per month and distributingthem as fast as they areproduced. By 2013, 4.6 mil-lion Israelis will have gasmasks.

Reverend Pushee isno stranger to controversyand is well known for hisanti-Semitic remarks andvitriolic hatred of Israel. Heonce claimed that Canada’sEnvironment Minister wascomplicit with ”Zionistgenocide, ethnic cleansingand weapons testing inGaza”. He dismissed pastabductions of Israeli sol-diers as a "mere embarrass-ment" and outrageously
asserted that Israel inten-tionally targets UN installa-tions, schools, and hospi-tals using depleted urani-um. It’s also been reportedthat he described Israelis as(among other things) a"greedy," "Mafia style"administration with a "defi-ciency in intelligence andeven the United Church ofCanada (UCC), well knownespecially nowadays for itsvociferous criticism ofIsrael, ousted ReverendPushee from a leadershipposition for his vile anti-Israel remarks.

IT’S NOT THE KIND OF NEWS THAT APPEARSon the front pages of the world’s press but therecent economic agreement between Israel and thePalestinians deserves publicity. For over a yearthe two sides have been working on formulatingan agreement that regulates taxes and bilateraltrade. The Israeli Finance Ministry maintains thatthe agreements that will go into effect on January1, 2013 “will introduce mechanisms that betterfacilitate the movement of goods between Israeland the Palestinian Authority, and the support ofboth parties’ efforts in reducing illegal trade andtax evasion. The arrangements will further assistin enhancing the Palestinian tax system and thusaid in strengthening the economic base of thePalestinian Authority.” The two sides also agreedthat a pipeline would be built “for the safe andexclusive transfer of petroleum products” fromIsrael to the PA. Fifteen of the 18speakers at the Yad Vashemsymposium did not evenmention that the WarRefugee Board sentWallenberg to Budapest. Itwas as if Wallenberg justdropped from the sky oneday. The other three speak-ers did mention the Board,

but only very briefly.Remarkably, not one ofthose three acknowledgedthe role of the BergsonGroup in bringing about theBoard's creation. Oneexplained the establishmentof the WRB in these terms:"The War Refugee Boardwas established in responseto President Roosevelt'sdesire to save the lives ofinnocent Jews in Europe."The truth, however, is thatthe Roosevelt administra-tion staunchly opposed cre-ating a rescue agency, anddid so only under tremen-dous pressure.
Speaking at theCenter for Jewish History inNew York City last year,Prof. Richard Breitman, edi-tor of the U.S. HolocaustMuseum's scholarly jour-nal, remarked that it is"probably accurate" to say"that Wallenberg would nothave been able to do whathe did in Budapest ifBergson had not done whathe did in Washington."Certainly Bergson's effortswere not the only reason theWRB was created, and theWRB's support was not theonly factor that madeWallenberg's mission possi-ble. But when all is said anddone, the fact is that if therehad been no WRB, therewould have been noWallenberg; and if there hadbeen no Bergson, therewould have been no WRB.

As I write, four ofIndia’s top naval warshipsare docked at the Haifa portas part of a four-day visit toIsrael to “strengthen ser-vice-to-service linkages.”
Indian officials saidthat the warships, whichare equipped with advancedelectronic sensors and mis-sile systems, show “theimportance India attachesto the growing Indo-Israelirelations, and continuedcooperation and engage-ment between the two coun-tries is expected to grow.”
A rising world power, this relationship remainsamong Israel’s most impor-tant, and as India’s PrimeMinister, Singh is largelyresponsible for cultivatingand developing this vitalalliance.3. Stephen Harper PrimeMinister of Canada.
Ranked number oneon last year’s list, Harper’ssupport for Israel andfriendship to Canada’sJewish community hasbeen unwavering.
In June of this yearit was revealed that hisDefense Minister PeterMacKay told Israel’s top mil-itary commander at thetime, Maj.-Gen. GabiAshkenazi, during a 2011visit to the Middle East that“a threat to Israel is a threatto Canada.”
Notably, last year heblocked a G8 resolutionthat would have supportedPresident Obama’s 2011Middle East policy speech, mentioning the call for aPalestinian State based onthe 1967 lines, while not

Mitt Romney U.S.Presidential Candidate.
Love or hate his pol-itics, Romney’s vocal sup-port for Israel as a con-tender for the world’s topjob, has challenged theincumbent and manyAmericans to rediscovertheir own understanding ofthe United States’ specialrelationship with the Jewishstate.
His tough stance onIran has put theAyatollahs on notice. Inhis recent trip to the HolyLand, he acknowledgedJerusalem as Israel’s capi-tal and cited the historicconnection of the Jewishpeople with the land, which has gone a long wayin underlining the Jewishnarrative regarding Israelon the world stage, there-by earning him the topspot on this year’s list.

masks.Israelis can get
their gas masks at eightspecial stations set upinside post offices aroundIsrael. Workers there toldThe Media Line that therehas not been a significantincrease in the past fewweeks despite the almostdaily reports in theIsraeli media aboutSyria’s chemical weaponsstores.
“The politiciansseem more worried than thepublic,” Shlomo Brom said.“I don’t have a gas maskand I’m not concerned.”
In recent days,Prime Minister BenjaminNetanyahu has warned thatIsrael might act againstHizbullah, which is based inLebanon, if they obtainedchemical weapons.
“Can you imagineHizbullah – the people whoare conducting with Iran, allthese terror attacks aroundthe world – can you imaginewhat that would mean ifthey had chemicalweapons?” Netanyahu saidon America’s Fox News. “Itwould be like Al-Qa ’ idahaving chemical weapons.
It is something that is notacceptable to us.”
Netanyahu wouldnot say whether Israelwould launch a pre-emptivestrike on Hizbullah, although Israeli media hasspeculated that it couldhappen anytime if Israelfeels threatened.
“Israel is perma-nently prepared for threatsof these types,” a defenseofficial told The Media Line.“The defense establishmentis continually training, practicing and investing sothat we remain ready toprovide the relevantresponse to all the scenar-ios. Naturally, we are notgoing to elaborate regard-ing the specifics of the sce-narios or the prepared-ness.”
Two Israeli compa-nies presently produce thegas masks -- Shalon, whichproduces new masks; andSuper-Gum, which refur-bishes old ones. Even ifthey stepped up their pro-duction and operated at fullcapacity, it would take atleast two years to make allof the gas masks that areneeded.

A CHECKPOINT BETWEEN RAMALLAH ON THEWest Bank and Israel. This was the scene on anormal day but recently Israel unexpectedlyeased restrictions on Palestinians looking to visitJerusalem during the Muslim holy month ofRamadan, saying improved security meant itcould let in thousands more from West Bank com-munities. Israeli officials said they had loweredthe age limit for men wanting to visit the al-Aqsamosque in the old city to 40 from 50 and had alsohanded out seven times more permits toPalestinians between the ages of 35 and 40.Religious authorities said up to half a million peo-ple visited the third holiest site in Islam as visitorsand pilgrims flowed through the checkpoints onJerusalem's Eastern flanks. "I'm rejoicing and sohappy to be in Jerusalem after 10 years of not vis-iting," said 42-year-old Mohammed Rashid, fromthe West Bank town of Yatta, sipping a midnightcup of coffee in a brightly lit old city arcade. TheIsraeli Coordinator for Government Activities in theTerritories' (COGAT) said that whereas lastRamadan it handed out just 16,700 entry per-mits, this year it distributed 123,514, and hadalso slashed the age limit.
