Prof. Ahamad Tajuddin Khader

Dean School of Computer Sciences

I would like to express my thanks for being given the opportunity to deliver the welcoming note to our school 2012 annual report. It is a great pleasure to welcome you to another edition of the Annual Report of the School of Computer Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia. For the first time the School has decided to have the annual report in the e-magazine form with paperless in mind.

The various accomplishments and achievements as highlighted in this report have shown again that the school has performed reasonably well in most, if not all areas in 2012 at both local and international levels. The school has shown marked improvements in various areas such as research and innovation, teaching, supervision, publications, and industry and community engagement in order to be in line with both the university’s and the school’s missions and visions.

All these achievements would not have been possible without the continuous commitment and support from every member of the school. I believe that each and everyone has played a role in contributing to the performance of the school, be it Deputy Deans, Programme Chairpersons, academic, administrative and technical staff, students, alumni or industry partners. Thank you all for your commitment. The trust from the university’s top management is also a crucial element in the success of the school. I would therefore like to extend my sincerest thanks to USM’s management aptly led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Omar Osman. I would also like to thank our former dean, Prof. Dr. Rosni Abdullah for all her effort in elevating SoCS to the position it is today.

I am confident that this annual report will be beneficial to our future students and the public seeking the latest information on academic, research and other activities. It is my hope that this annual report will assist in disseminating a clearer and more detailed information on research and the researchers in the School. This will also be beneficial to those aspiring to conduct research or become graduate students at SoCS.

Again, I would like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to the editorial board members and all those involved for their tireless effort and dedication in producing this report.

Thank you.

The School of Computer Sciences was established officially on the 1st of March 1995 after functioning for a period of 10 years as the Division of Computer Science, an independent and autonomous unit within the then School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. Over the years, the school has been engaging in various developments, advances, and achievements of computer science pertaining to the academic programmes, research and development, consultancy, community services and others. The school is now in a leading position as far as research and development activities are concerned and is gearing up its efforts to meet new challenges of research and development by restructuring our research activities/groups into 3 clusters to support our research activities. These 3 clusters (Enabling Technologies & Infrastructure, Data-to-Knowledge, and Service Computing) can be seen as our integrated approach in line with the emerging trend of multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. The school has been maintaining strong and strategic linkages with the industry. Formal and informal events has been organised to exchange ideas that benefit the curriculum and the industry. The school has been involved in various joint projects with all types of industries supported by the national and international grants. The school has also been involved in consultancies, particularly in software system developments. In terms of global partners, the school has always maintained strong and strategic linkages with universities in North America, Europe, Australia, Japan, Singapore and the Middle East. These smart partnerships include long-standing research collaborations with several French universities on natural language processing, distributed computing and artificial intelligence. The joint supervision of postgraduate students is made possible through such linkages. Over the next decade, the School of Computer Sciences will continue its efforts to strengthen its curriculum and research in order to produce quality graduates and to contribute to the sustainable development of the nation.

Writing for Journals with Impact Factor – 30 January 2012 This workshop is for participants who are experienced in paper writing. Ideally, participants should be at an advanced stage of their research with results to publish. Submissions should conform to the requirements (page length and formatting) of a targeted journal. Students are required to attend with their respective supervisors. Those who have had prior journal submissions rejected or needing major revision are also encouraged to attend.

Professor Lim Chee Peng giving tips Participants of the workshop

Academic Publishing and Thesis Writing with Latex Workshop – 14 February 2012 until 15 February 2012

There is an increasing emphasis on academic publishing in Malaysia, particularly after the APEX initiative by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education. In the Science and Engineering disciplines, a typesetting tool called LaTeX provides a significantly higher reader and author experience. LaTeX is not as widespread a publishing platform for scientific publishing in Malaysia. A 2-day intensive hands-on workshop is presented to address this gap. Academic publishing in prestigious International conferences and ISI Impact Factor journals is a key measure of research output and capability. Advice on academic writing and publishing will also be incorporated within the workshop and should prove invaluable to those with limited experience of academic publishing.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8, 2012 - After witnessing the promising performance of the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in various fields under the framework of the Accelerated Program for Excellence, USM is urged to focus on driving the cross-field research. Higher Education Minister, Dato 'Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the effort necessary to be implemented by institutions of higher learning (IPT) in order to find a balance point between disciplines of science, technology and humanity in an integrated manner. He said the country need to produce the best brains who are versatile and able to understand the importance of knowledge, apart from playing the role in contributing solution ideas to the current issues and challenges. "Institution of higher education in this country should find a way to combine various disciplines of interest to produce students who not only proficient in their knowledge but know how to apply their knowledge," he said. He was speaking at a press conference after launching Selected Initiatives Book of APEX Univserity and M-Umrah: Umrah Guide Mobile Application developed by USM researchers for global users. The launching ceremony was also held in conjunction with Partnership Seminar for Selected Initiatives Book of USM APEX organized by USM in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE). He added that Malaysia today is not only moving in its comfortable zone, instead also covering the range of human capital that are capable to compete globally. "The ministry is confident and believe in the ability of USM to achieve the country's objective and mission to strengthen the concept of liberal education and multi-discipline, also hoping that the effort started by the APEX program will also be shared with all.'' he said. Commenting on the innovative M-Umrah, Mohamed Khaled said, it shows that technology is no exception in university efforts to help the pilgrims who perform the Hajj and Umrah to do their worships better and more systematic. He said this is the first innovations introduced in this country which are creative and unique. The effort of the USM researchers will give an invaluable benefit to the global community."We have seen the mobile application in the Quran with the translation, but for Hajj and Umrah, this will become the first to be fitted with detailed information at our fingertips," he said. Meanwhile, USM Vice-Chancellor, Assoc. Dato 'Omar Osman, said M-Umrah will be improved and translated into several other languages which will be used by pilgrims around the world, including English, Urdu and others. "It was developed solely by USM researchers and it becomes one of our initiatives in empowering Hajj and Umrah pilgrims through the concept of knowledge transfer," he said. M-Umrah also provides an opportunity for Umrah pilgrims to know their steps to perform the rituals gradually and orderly, from the first step to the Holy Land until the completion of their worship. It is also capable to give directions to the congregation if lost through the application of Global Positioning System (GPS) developed in the system.

C4SL Care for Second Language

Community Project Title:

Adopting a Knowledge Portal to Improve Reading and Writing Skills in English Language among Young Learners through “Care

for Second Language” (C4SL) Programme

Synopsis:

There has been a persistent concern on the deteriorating level of proficiency in English as a Second Language (ESL) among our

students at different levels of education, mainly the tertiary level. The Care for Second Language (C4SL) Programme is a

community project which adopts the use of a knowledge portal for Special Interest Groups (SIGKP) or Communities of Practice

(CoP). The portal is called Kliquey. It acts as a platform that allows sharing of data, information, and knowledge among an

electronic community (e-community) of the same interest. A research team from the School of Computer Sciences, USM,has

developed the indigenous Kliquey portal.

By adopting Kliquey to support the C4SL Programme, members of the e-community who are the experts, mainly educators or

teachers, can share any interesting English materials and encourage learners or students to read the materials. Learners will

then be encouraged to read the materials, write their comments, and rank the materials. Learners can further discuss relevant

topics via forums. Learners can also share any related materials. The more contributions they make, the higher their rankings

are, which members can also view graphically. This will indirectly encourage younger generations to learn English through this e-

community and reduce their online time towards social networking sites, which is merely for socialising. Currently, C4SL is only

open to selected Form One students of five pioneering schools around Penang. C4SL will be available to other schools very soon.
