History of Design

Since the dawn of time, people have created images to express aesthetic, philosophic, or other abstract ideas to be preserved and seen by others. In

all parts of the world this has been true. In these early times, people transferred knowledge by listening and observing others.

People used naturally occurring materials to solve basic problems of food, shelter, and transportation. This process, over a long period of time, evolved into different architectural styles influenced by form and function.

As innovations occurred, technologies evolved using new tools, materials, and processes leading to improved standards of living and quality of life.

This gear and belt drive design, sketched by Leonardo da Vinci in

the 16th century, has been brought to life with a solid

modeling package.

Today’s modeling software can even animate the assembly, simulating the mechanism’s

full range of motion.
