The Trailblazing Times “Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail” - Ralph Waldo Emerson VOL. 2, NO. 1 OCTOBER 2019 Junior High News Let’s get this started! The school year is in full swing. Homecoming has come and gone, and football, volleyball, and cross country have all finished. Though the leaves are falling and sports seasons are finishing, there’s no way that this junior high’s electric energy will be falling anytime soon. Who do you say that I am? A school year is full of questions and answers—inside and outside of the classroom. Our motto for this year is probably the most important question ever asked: “Who do you say that I am?” Jesus posed it to the apostles and now he is asking us. Our answer to this question quite literally has eternal ramifications. How do you respond? (McGrane, 2019). Above, Gabrielle Kielkucki provided an artistic display of Beckman’s motto for the 2019-2020 school year: “Who do you say I am?” (Mark 8:29). How was Halloween started? Halloween is a fun holiday celebrated each year on October 31. It originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, wearing costumes and eating sweet treats.

Many events happen in October around the world one of which is Halloween. Halloween is celebrated in many countries other than the United States. In other countries, Halloween is celebrated a lot like it is in the United States with Trick or Treating, parties, games, and pranks. In Mexico they celebrate a different version of Halloween on November 1 and they call it Day of the Dead.

Halloween TodayHalloween is a holiday where kids dress up as monsters or sometimes their favorite characters and go door to door saying trick or treat hoping to get there bags full of candy. Families carve jack-o-lanterns and decorate the yard with decorations of ghosts, pumpkins, monsters, and lots more. Some people like to go to haunted houses or watch horror movies for the halloween spirit. Lots of families go to pumpkin patches of apple festivals to celebrate.

This is Kepler-452b/ GJ-357d. This planet is very similar to earth and scientist think it may be habitable. See left for more details.

Kepler was discovered in 2019 by NASA’s TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite). This new planet is close to our own but not in our solar system and is six hundred light years away from earth. It orbits a dwarf star and is believed to be two times larger than earth.

The real question is if it is habitable. It may contain water and has a sun like star so the habitability of Kepler isn’t a sure thing but is an optimistic sample to choose from.

Interview-Mrs.Hogan-Q What do you think about the new planet and do you think it is habitable?A: “I don’t know much about the planet but I think that if we find another planet with life then it will be very different from ours.”
