As of 2008, prior to the Verizon acquisition, Wireless Advantage had 14 Alltel stores under the Alltel flag. Following the merger, Maddox was able to scale his new Verizon business to 49 stores in four states.

Million. Wireless Advantage also won Best of the Wiregrass for best cellular store in 2016.

A native of Huntsville, Maddox attended Lee High School and played baseball for the Generals and won the batting title in 1992, MVP in 1993, as well as first team all-city team. He graduated with honors and an advanced diploma.

Maddox went on to attend Auburn University Montgomery where he studied accounting and played baseball for the Senators. In 1996 he began working for Alltel Communications. During his time there, he discovered his love for the wireless industry and passion for sales.

Two Great Publications,One Great Idea!

Ad Sales Campaign Gets Underway May 1

You want to reach new residents and the business community. They want to know how to find you. The best way to achieve both goals is to advertise in the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2018 Dothan’s Official Welcome Guide and the 2018 Membership Directory & Business Guide.

The Dothan Area Chamber and Print Services Inc., the Chamber member awarded this project, have begun the ad sales campaign for these 2018

publications. Chamber members (primary contact and/or advertising agent) recently began receiving the Chamber’s project introduction letter, verification form(s) and a “Reserve Your Space” brochure.

Print Services will be contacting members about the advertising opportunities and has a media kit available online at www.psiprinter.com.

The Welcome Guide and Membership Directory & Business Guide will be mailed to Chamber members in late January 2018. High visibility through great distribution has been the key to the Welcome Guide’s success. Increased usage of the Membership Directory is a direct result of its convenience to find fellow business members to promote our business-to-business relationships. Don’t miss out on these important publications! Your company will benefit greatly by reaching all who look to the Dothan Area Chamber for information about Dothan businesses in 2018.

Distribution of the Welcome Guide (10,000) includes economic development prospects, new residents, prospective retirees and relocation families requesting information through the Chamber, 15 Chamber member apartment complexes for new residents, 15 Chamber member hotels/motels in-room distribution and the Dothan Utilities and Wiregrass Electric Authority offices to all new service customers. Great web exposure is another avenue of distribution for the 2018 Welcome Guide. The publication will be on the following websites: The City of Dothan, Houston County, Dothan Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce and Print Services Inc.

HEALTHSOUTH Rehabilitation Hospital of Dothan is proud to announce that it has received top recognition from Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation for the eighth year. The hospital ranked in the top 10 percent of qualifying rehabilitation hospitals for 2016, 2015, 2013 and 2007–2011.

UDSMR is a nonprofit group that evaluates rehabilitation hospitals on their delivery of quality care. To determine the rankings, UDSMR uses a system that measures the efficiency and effectiveness of a hospital’s rehabilitation programs. The system evaluates and tracks a patient’s progress through the rehabilitation process to document gains. This is the 11th year UDSMR has issued the awards.

In 2016, HEALTHSOUTH Dothan is pleased to report:

• The average length of patient stay was 12.6 days;

• 85.5 percent of HEALTHSOUTH Dothan

patients were able to go home at discharge; and

• It holds Disease-Specific Care Certification from the Joint Commission for its stroke rehabilitation program. Our UDSMR ranking allows us to

benchmark our performance against national data and confirms our ability to help our patients achieve excellent outcomes,” said Margaret Futch, HEALTHSOUTH Dothan CEO. “The rehabilitation programs and services at HEALTHSOUTH Dothan help patients reach a higher functional level in a shorter period of time, which helps them to return to normal life more quickly.”

The data used for this report was based on 12 months of 2016 data, drawn from both Medicare and non-Medicare patients. The results were weighted and combined into a single composite score, and each hospital was assigned a percentile rank from zero to 100 relative to the 781 qualifying subscribers in the UDSMR database.

The 2016 unemployment rate for Houston County was 5.9 percent. On average for the year, 2,629 people were unemployed and seeking employment, while 42,089 people were employed within the county for that year, and while over 7,000 were self-employed (the last number reported was 7,091 in 2014).

Nation-wide in 2015, 4.9 percent of the working population held multiple jobs with the mid-western states having the highest percentages.

South Dakota leads the country with 9.1 percent having multiple jobs. The Census Bureau reports that 4.3 percent of Alabama workers

held more than one job in 2015, up from 3.9 percent in 2014. Within Houston County, there were 2,590 people that held more than one job. That is 5.8 percent of those employed in the county, which is the same percentage of workers with multiple jobs in 2006, before the recession, and is approximately the same as the unemployment rate, although the unemployment rate is as a percentage of the workforce, not those employed.

The sectors that had the most multiple job employment were: Retail, Healthcare, and Accommodation and Food Service, with 566, 563, and 415 respectively. The same trend holds true for those sectors in the Dothan Metropolitan Statistical Area (Geneva, Henry and Houston counties).

Within Houston County, females were more likely to have two jobs than males, with 1,538 females holding multiple jobs versus 1,052 males.

Tom Cozart,Signs Etcetera Inc.

Tom Cozart and Signs Etcetera will celebrate 20 years of business May 1, 2017. As the owner of Signs Etcetera in May, 1997, Tom Cozart along with two employees, started producing signs and advertising materials for customers all over the Wiregrass. Many of his first customers are still loyal customers to this day.

Over the last 20 years, there have only been two years that Signs Etcetera has not seen an increase in sales over the year prior. The company now produces over $1 million in sales each year. And over the last 20 years, Signs Etcetera has evolved with advances in technology. From two small 15” and 30” plotters back then, to two 60” wide format printers, three wide-format plotters and a table router today.

Signs Etcetera takes pride in its slogan of “From concept to creation” and enjoys making its customers dreams become a reality. From small decals to monogramming your YETI cup or a complete truck wrap for Covan and the University of Alabama football program, no project is too big or too small.

Signs Etcetera would not be where they are today without the risk taking, hard work and dedication of Tom Cozart.

Jason and Patricia DeVane,Hots Deli

Jason and Patricia’s Restaurant careers began unexpectedly. After Jason spent over 13 years as an Investigator between the Dothan Police Department and Movie Gallery he and Patricia began looking toward the future. Patricia, a Spanish teacher of 26 years, and Jason were looking to open a small restaurant after Movie Gallery closed. They instead decided to purchase Hots Deli in November of 2010 because it was a local restaurant which they felt they could revitalize and change into their vision for a healthier place to eat.

Jason believes its important to “Never lose sight of the future, or you will most certainly be a part of the past”. With that in mind, they have continued to rebrand and grow their business by listening to their customers. Jason and Patricia both believe building relationships with their customers, vendors, employees and other business owners are the basis of their business and its growth. While they have been blessed, they also know it is just as important to continue to work “on” your business not just “in” your business. The DeVane’s enjoy being involved within local community and donating their time to local charities knowing “We are truly all in this together”.

Steve Maddox, Verizon Wireless Advantage

Steve Maddox is the founder of Wireless Advantage and opened his first Alltel store in Dothan in 2001. As of 2008, prior to the Verizon acquisition, Wireless Advantage had 14 Alltel stores under the Alltel flag. Following the merger, Maddox was able to scale his new Verizon business to 49 stores in four states.

In 2015, Maddox and Wireless Advantage won the Alabama Retail Association’s gold level Retailer of the Year award in the $20 million plus category, beating out Books-A-Million.

Maddox and his wife Candice have recently opened their own Rock-N-Roll Sushi franchise. Maddox credits his wife, four children and his loyal employees for his success as they are his constant motivation.
