TRAVELLINGABOARD

the BOOKMOBILE by Jane Jennings Bkm Coordinator

Over the past four years, the bookmobile staff has offered programs of two weeks duration following the holidays. Our primary goal is to expose the children on the bookmobile to another culture. So far we have covered Hawaii, Mexico and Beaches of the World. This year, we "travelled" to Japan. The staff was dressed in costume, and the bookmobile was decorated to follow this theme. We constructed an arch depicting the "Gateway to Heaven" at the entrance to make it look like so many temples and shrines in Japan. We hung Japanese lanterns from the roof and had a map to show the area. There were also rock posters from Japan and decorative fans, some of which the staff made. The fans had the American word and Japanese translation for words most commonly used by children. The children love this because they can go home and use these words to surprise their parents. One little boy was very proud to have mastered "Hello Mother" and ran home to demonstrate his abilities. His mother came back to tell us how impressed she was with our program. The music of the country is played on a tape player.During this two week period, a contest is run that requires oarticipants to go to a mao and a World Book to answer the questions. The last week we showed movies and served popcorn. This year the favorite movie was "The House of Hosimoto , a cartoon about an honorable mouse. The Bookmobile staff is delighted by the success of these programs. Inis year's was better than ever. We enjoy participating as much as our patrons do!SAYONARA

NlGHTMARES: THOSE CREATURES THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHTby Dolores C. Chupela, Children's Librarian

Scary, slithering shadows....monsters playing "hide and seek in the window....creepy, crawly creatures under the bed. A typical horror movie? Hardly.Instead, the above is a spooky bedroom scenario where a child has just experienced a horrible nightmare.According to Dr. Thomas Anders, a child psychiatrist and professor at Brown University, "children frequently fear attack by big animals or monsters or any scary apparition they can come up with. The theme^is that they're small and the world is large and it's scary out there .Scientists believe that nightmares are a normal part of every childhood and are especially frequent between 3 years and 8 years of age. Children in this age group have difficulty in determining fantasy from reality. The following books can help both the parent and the child cope with this "vicious monster":

For Parents(J649.122 Sch'.) Schaefer, Charles E. (■ others. Teach Your Baby to Sleep Through the Night.Deals with infant sleep problems, nightmares and night waking and crying.(J649.1 Sch.) Schachter, Robert 4 others. When Vour Child is Afraid., Discusses fears and phobias from birth to teen years, including bedtime and sleep fears.

For KidsJ-EASY Aylesworth, J. The Bad Dream.when a little boy is awakened by a bad dream, his parents comfort him by reminding him that nightmares are not real.J-EASY Gruber, S. The Monster Under My Bed.At bedtime, a little bear finds that there is a logical explanation for those monster noises coming from beneath his bed.J-EASY Mayer, M. There's a Nightmare in My Closet.A little boy confronts his nightmare with helmet, cannon and infantry!J-EASY Mayer, M. There's Something in My Attic.Convinced there is a nightmare in the attic, a brave little girl sneaks up the stairs with lasso in hand to capture it!(J154.63 May.) Mayle, Peter. Sweet Dreams and Monsters^Explains what happens when v/e sleep, how daytime experiences can affect our dreams, and different kinds of dreams and nightmares.Lastly, do the following before tucking in:

Monsters: Keep Out!A Bedroom Checklist

by Peter Mayle‘The first place to check is under the bed. Make a complete search with a flashlight, and be sure to look under the covers right down to the foot of the bed.‘Look in the closets, and double-check that dark corner where you once thought you saw something spooky.‘Check behind the curtains.•Check the place where you keep your toys. If they live in a box, close the lid tightly so they can't lump out even if they want to.•Now you can get into bed and relax. Snuggle down, close your eyes, sleep tight. Sweet dreams,

good night!
