It is matter of great pride for us that the Punjabi and Gurmukhi curriculum developed in our school is being followed by over 20 Sunday Schools in the USA

Sikh Gurdwara San Jose is a favorite place for wedding for the young couples. Availability of a variety of halls for Anand Karaj and meals arrangements is much appreciated by the Sangat.

Sangat of Gurdwara Sahib has been constantly increasing. Doors of Gurdwara are open to people of all communities. We are finding a large number of people from non-Sikh communities participating in celebration of special days like Bandi Chhord Divas, New year evening and 4th of July celebrations. The sewadars in the Langar served more than 15000 devotees on Bandi Chhord Diwas this year. The process of serving was very streamlined and devotees did not have to wait very long.

To keep management of Gurdwara Sahib always in San-gat’s chosen representatives, Gurdwara Committee has successfully organized the member registration during the last three years. This has been accomplished for the first time in 30 years history of the Gurdwara Sahib.

Please take time to read about the details of the wonderful progress made by different programs of the Gurdwara Sahib in rest of the pages of this newsletter. Sangat and Sewadars of this Gurdwara Sahib deserve congratulations for their devotion and Grace of Waheguru that made this progress possible.

As the new year has started, I on behalf of the Gurdwara Parbandhak committee wish the Sangat a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year. May Waheguru’s blessings be upon us all and may peace prevail in the whole world.

Nanak Naam Chardikalaa, Tere Bhane Sarbat Da Bhallaa.

Sincerely Hardev Singh Takhar

The Dharmic Programs are core of the activities of the Sikh Gurdwara San Jose. The existing programs have been improved and many new ones have been added to meet the needs of the Sangat. Some of the highlights are as follows,

1. New programs that we have initiated are off to great start. Celebrating Lohri as gender equality day is much appreciated by the Sangat. The Sports events and the Gatka at the Hola Mohalla bring back the memories of Sri Anandpur Sahib. Attendance at the conference to commemorate the first Parkash Utsav of Sri Guru Granth Sahib has been steadily increasing and the quality of papers presented is very high.

2. The morning program In Gurdwara starts at 4:00 AM and continues until 9:00 AM. Program consists of Nitnem, Sukhmani Sahib Path ,Complete Asa Di Vaar and kathaa of the Hukum. The evening program starts with Naam Simran at 5:00 PM and then continues with Rehras Sahib Path, Keertan and Kathaa until 8:30 PM. Extended programs are offered on weekends.

3. We have added Keertan program in the Sunday afternoons to meet the need of the devotees who come to Gurdwara Sahib at that time.

4. Our four resident Jathaas are chosen because of their high caliber. In addition every month we invite one more Jathaa of repute (from Darbar sahib or other famous Gurdwaras) to visit us.

5. Extended programs featuring Ragi Jathaas, Dhadi jathaas and Parcharaks are held on all Gurpurabs and Sangrads. Parbhat Pheris, Nagar keertans and Sri Akhand Path larees are organized on important Gurpurabs. Once a month Guru Nanak Khalsa School students delight the sangat with Keertan.

6. To enhance understanding of Gurbani, arrangements have been made to project the meanings of the Shabads during the Keertan program. For the same purpose a program of interactive discussion about message of Gurbani is organized once a month in collaboration with the Chardikalaa foundation.

7. To propagate the message of Sikhism among people of other faiths, we participate regularly in the Interfaith programs. Recently we hosted an interfaith breakfast at the Gurdwara Sahib, where besides representatives from different faiths, Mayor Chuck Reed and several other city council members participated.

8. To disseminate the message of sharing given by Guru Nanak Sahib, an annual 5K walk has been started. Money so raised was used to donate 1000 blankets to the needy. Last year 800 blankets were provided to the homeless.

Parshad & Langar Sewa at Sikh Gurdwara San Jose

Sikh Gurdwara San Jose Newsletter Page 4

Parshad is a blessing from the Guru. In Sikh Gurdwara San Jose, the parshad is prepared everyday early in the morning and service starts after the first Ardas. We have dedicated Parshadiyas who prepare parshad according to the Rehat Maryada in a Kitchen dedicated for this purpose. To maintain the high standards of hygiene, the parshad is now distributed using a scoop. On Sundays and other Gurupurabs some dedicated sewadars from Sangat help with preparing and distributing the Parshad. Every week more than 100 lbs. of butter is used in preparing the parshad.

Langar is a divine gift of our Gurus. Here low and high, rich and poor all sit together and partake the meals prepared lovingly by the sewadars. Taking Langar one remembers and is thankful to Guru Nanak Sahib for having started this tradition of sharing by feeding the hungry Sadhus. When one eats the kheer, one remembers Mata Khivi Ji, wife of Guru Angad Sahib, who by her spirit of sewa strengthened the tradition.

Gurdwara Sahib San Jose is blessed with a large langar hall and its well equipped Kitchen is second to none. The spirit of sewa in the sangat is amazing. With only two Langaries and help from Sangat, over 5000 meals are served to the sangat every week. On Bandhi Chord Divas evening over 15000 devotees partook the Langar.

On Special days items from the rich Punjabi and American cuisine are added to the Langar. Chole Bhature, Jalebis and other delicacies are prepared fresh in the kitchen. Fresh squeezed sugar cane juice, served on Lohri and Holla Mohalla is liked by the sangat. Roasted corn on cob is another favorite on these days. Pizza is very popular with children

The tradition of providing meals to the needy as started by Guru Nanak Sahib is kept alive. Langar hall is open to everyone. Every month sewadars prepare langar and take it to a homeless shelter.

Guru Nanak Khalsa School Continues its Success March Guru Nanak Khalsa School (GNKS); a program of the Sikh Gurdwara San Jose has just completed its 25 years of operation in June 2014. During these years the school has grown from 55 students to over 700 students. A few thousand students have learned Punjabi language and the Sikh history. Over 500 students have graduated and learned to read Gurbani from Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Started in the small Gurdwara building on S. White road the school is now housed in a modern building with 14 well equipped classrooms.

We are also sad to note passing away of one of the Founders and key contributor to the school, S. Molinder Singh Kohli in February 2014. Sikhs of bay area will forever be thankful to Waheguru for giving them the leadership of this visionary.

Twenty five years represent a generation change. We are pleased to note that some of our early graduates got married, are raising Gursikh families and now their children are attending the school. One of them Harkiran Kaur graduated last year.

Strength of the school is breadth of programs it offers to its students. Punjabi language and Gurmat curriculum designed and followed by the school is best in class .Keertan training program employs some of the best teachers available and over 100 students are getting training in Harmonium and Tabla playing. Training in Sikh heritage instruments like saranda and rabab is also available.

Students learn the art of public speaking, Sikh history and Philosphy by participating in Sri Hemkunt Foundation Speech Symposium and the Gurbani competition. The school also hosts annually Sri Hemkunt Foundation Keertan Darbar, in which teams from all over Northern California participate in Keertan. Our students have done exceptionally well in winning awards at these events.

Another unique and notable program is Sikh Scouts of America, This is first of its kind in the nation. The annual school picnic is a big fun event and all the school families eagerly look forward to it. To enable academic excellence, the school is presently running a pilot program for SAT training. The initial results from this program are very encouraging. A program for gatka training is also under discussion.

Children’s Summer camp 2014 was very successful. Over 345 children attended it, Renowned speakers like S. Roop Singh from England shared the Sikh history with the young campers.

Success of the school is due to its dedicated team of Contd. On P6

Bhai Sahib Bhai Pinderpal Singh Delights the San Jose Sangat The Dharmic Programs in the year 2015 got off to a great start with Bhai Sahib Bhai Pinderpal Singh visiting the Gurdwara Sahib for the first two weeks of January 2015. In his kathaa he focused on the life of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the unparalleled deeds he did in sacrificing his entire family for protecting the liberty and freedom of faith for the Indians. Bhai Sahib’s style of speaking and knowledge was a magnet for the Sangat. Every evening over a thousand devotees listened to him in rapt attention for nearly two hours. We are hoping that Bhai Sahib will be back again in May 2015.

Some kind words from our Sangat Members “My daughter was married early 2014 at San Jose Gurdwara, I was amazed how quickly Gurdwara management helped extra tables/setting upon last minute request for unexpected wedding guests, my family was very pleased for overall wed-ding arrangement at Gurdwara sahib”

Amritpal Singh from San Jose.

My daughter Muneet Gill got married on April 21, 2013. The arrangement you made at the San Jose Gurudwara was high-ly appreciated. The wedding at the Gurudwara went smoothly and was well organized. The San Jose Gurudwara is such a beautiful place in North America outside of India itself, and all the credit goes to organizers of the San Jose Gurudwara. We would highly praise you and would recommend that others come to see the Gurdwara and experience the beauty and wonderful seva that you offer there. We whole heartedly support the organizers (Sevadars) of San Jose Gurdwara. I don't think anyone else could have done such a wonderful job. ..

Thank you again, Sukhwinder Singh Gill 360 389-5564

My grand daughter got married at San Jose Gurdwara. My family was very impressed by the wedding arrangements made by San Jose Gurdwara management. Current management of San Jose Gurdwara has been doing a marvelous sewa to run such a large organization, a well known Gurdwara in the world. I pray that management continue its efforts to keep this San Jose Gurdwara as one of the greatest place to visit and get all the happiness in their lives; said by 95 years old Subedar Surjit Singh of Latale wala.
