Querid@s Amig@s/Dear Friends,

From helping open Plaza Roberto Maestas to advocating for social justice issues, you made 2016 an important year. We are so appreciative to have 18,473 hours of service done by 815 volunteers, who have given their valuable time to make our mission possible. We served 16,452 participants in our 49 different programs and services, and we hope to expand our reach in the upcoming year.

El Centro de la Raza will always be here for the community, and we will continue to stand strong in 2017. In 2017 we welcome new programs such as the Plaza Roberto Maestas After-School Program for those in middle school and the Young Adults in Tech program, which provides valuable workforce development and skills for young adults. We also look forward to a new South Entrance of our main building, which will be replaced with a stage for events outside in the Plaza. Together in 2017, we will fight against unjust policies, empower and defend marginalized communities.

Please help us continue to grow and expand our services in 2017. Visit our website at www.elcentrodelaraza.org to learn about how to donate, volunteer, or attend one of our cooking classes or cultural events.

Respetuosamente/Respectfully,

Estela Ortega Juan CottoExecutive Director Board of Directors President

We were founded through the efforts of dedicated volunteers, and volunteers continue to play a vital role working alongside staff members to jointly reach our goals. Mil gracias to all of our outstanding volunteers who shared their time and talents with El Centro de la Raza in 2016. In 2016, we had the help of 815 volunteers who provided 18,473.12 hours of service valued at $435,227.1.** Services like our Free Legal Clinics, in partnership with Schroeter Goldmark and Bender, the Latina/o Bar Association of Washington, and

ara and her two young sons found themselves homeless for the first time after relocating to

Seattle. Five months pregnant, Tara had very limited resources and was referred to El Centro de la Raza’s Homeless Assistance Program. We collaborated with Tara to outline a plan that involved goal setting, budgeting, financial assistance with move-in costs, and rental assistance for six months. Although facing high barriers like low income and low credit score, Tara was successfully placed at a local apartment complex. With help from our wrap-around case management, the family also accessed services like low-income phone service, medical insurance for

the family, SNAP benefits, and the low-income ORCA Lift card. Tara now has a healthy baby and is able to provide stability for her newborn and her two other children. She has increased her monthly income and established herself in her new community. As of May, Tara has completed our program successfully: she has continued maintaining her stability for six months, paying her own rent without any adversity!

Case Management in Homeless Assistance Program

laza Roberto Maestas was completed in early August, with a grand opening in October! Plaza is now full of new families, who will benefit from being so close to El Centro's extensive social service programs. There are 110

units of one-to-three bedroom rental housing, all at rates that are affordable for those earning 30 to 60 percent of area median income. Plaza Roberto Maestas also contains space for events, meetings, retail, and a commerical kitchen. In April, carts will be available to create micro-vending spaces for Plaza residents. Centilia Cultural Center is the new event space available for renting. Located adjacent to the Beacon Hill Light Rail Station, Centilia Cultural Center is the perfect place for your next meeting, party, banquet, conference, pop-up shot, networking event, or Quinceañera. Contact Ramiro Reyes now for more information or to book your space for 2017 at [email protected] or (206) 973-4298.

Asset Building Encourages New Businesshile Sandra sold cosmetics and perfumes door to door with her two young children, she dreamed of starting her own Peruvian handicraft

business so she could share her country’s culture and traditions with her community. She had been coming to El Centro de la Raza for a few years

and participated in several of our programs. After hearing about our Business Development Training, she reached out to our Asset Building Program Coordinator to enroll. During the class, the students learned the basics of finance, operations, and marketing for a small business. Sandra was one of the first people interested in becoming a table vendor in the new Plaza Roberto Maestas space for micro vending. To prepare, she continues to work with the Business Opportunity Center on a business plan, pricing, and marketing. At the grand opening ceremony of Plaza Roberto Maestas on October 1st, Sandra set up shop and was our most popular vendor, making more than $1,000 in sales! Since then she has sold her handicrafts at holiday bazaars, community events, and expos. Although English is not Sandra’s first language, she continues fight the barrier to pursue her small business dreams. Left: Sandra at the Business Development Training graduation. Students Empowered to Succeeed ich students are taught; poor students are tested. Juan Carlos use to feel hopeless when he went to

school: his list of assignments felt irrelevant compared to the importance of his sister's safety after school and the list of food bank items he needed to collect. As a result, he was receiving failing grades and reprimands from teachers to be more responsible, but was not get-ting the resources he needed to do so. Once he enrolled in the Roberto Maestas Youth Leader-ship Institute, Juan Carlos began improving his grades and learning how to navigate an educational system that was not built for him to succeed. As a part of the program, Juan Carlos went to Latino Legislative Day in Olympia and spoke with legislators to advocate for

issues that were affecting his community. He also got the chance to meet with corporate level executives at Starbucks and connect with civic engagement opportunities! Juan Carlos now has over 300 hours of volunteer work with El Centro de la Raza, and currently volunteers in the food pantry. He no longer feels designed for failure, is in control of his success and inspires others around him to do the same.

In 2017, we will improve community access to El Centro de la Raza by renovating the south entrance to the building to add a covered outdoor stage for events, community gatherings, outdoor movies, and improved ADA access. In addition, we will be resurfacing the north parking lot complete with 100 parking stalls, landscaping and new gates. These improvements are made possible by Washington State Taxpayers, City of Seattle Department of Neighbor-hoods-Neighborhood Matching Fund Program, Comcast and individual donors.

El Centro de la Raza's annual building usage hours totaled 4,630 hours of affordable meeting and event space to community groups. 179 of those hours were provided at a discounted rental rate, and 1,351 hours were provided free of cost.
