ThefirstknownownerofthisworkisthepainterLéonRiesener(1808Paris–1878Paris),whowasEugèneDelacroix’ firstcousin.Furtherresearch isnecessarytoestablishwhetherthisworkmayhavebeenincludedinthesaleofRiesener’sestate(whichwasheldatHôtelDrouotinParis,10–11April 1879) orwhether itwas in fact retained by the family, possibly passing by descent toRiesener’sdaughterLouiseLéouzonLeDuc(1860–1944).This workwas one of over 70workswith the art dealer Raphaël Gérard in Paris in 1944. It isunclearwhetheratthetimeGérardand/orGurlittownedorco-ownedtheseworks,whethertheyhadbeenplacedoncommission,orindeedsimplydepositedwithGérard.Itisconspicuousthataninventory ofworkswithGérardwas drawn up in the very late stages of thewar; one possible

hypothesis is that Gurlitt placed for safekeeping with Gérard works that he had acquired inoccupiedParis,withtheintentionofmovingtheseobjectsatalaterdate.In1953,someoftheseworkswereshippedtoGurlitt inDusseldorf,whileothersremainedwithGérard until 1957 (at Gurlitt’s cost). The inscription “12” on verso refers to two inventories ofartworkswithGérard,onedated28April1944,theotherdatingfromaboutSeptember1953.Thiswork is respectively referred to herein as “DELACROIX: Dessin à la plume, (lion)“ (1944) and“Delacroix:FederzeichnungLöwe”(1953).ThepersonalpapersfoundinCorneliusGurlitt’sSalzburghomeincludeacollectionofabout2,400photographsofartworks.Photographno.7.1_F708, isa reproductionof thiswork; inscribedonverso, a statement of authenticity by art expert André Schoeller of Paris, 13, Rue de Téhéran,dated24March1944.
