NLCF students in a Vocational Life Skills workshop

they graduate and go out into the working world. But for tribal minori-ties from backgrounds of rural pover-ty, you can’t take things for granted. So I worked with a team of New Life Center staff to develop a two-day training on vocational life skills for students who will be graduating from high school, vocational train-ing and college. Workshops include Job Application and Interview Skills, Time Management and Prioritization, Personal Hygiene and Professional Manners, Conflict Management in the Workplace and Personal Budgeting. Through games, skits, small group discussion, lists, slide shows, videos, lectures and real-life stories, students are being prepared for the urban workplace. This year, 58 students attended the training. Now they are equipped to answer interview questions with confidence and poise. They can assess how urgent and important a work task is. And they understand how down payments and interest

calculations work for major purchases like motorbikes (the most common form of transportation used to com-mute to work in Thailand). With these skills, they are ready to stretch for-ward to secure good jobs and make informed decisions for their futures. Now if I could only get them to stop posting so many silly “selfies” on Facebook!
