Slide 2 Slide 3 The Cold War began in Europe. In 1948,the USA started a loan program called the Marshall Plan to help rebuild Europe and try to stop the spread of communism. Under the Marshall Plan, factors were rebuilt, mines were reopened,and roads were repaired and replaced. Slide 4 NATO:North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Countries involved in the NATO where France, Great Britain, West Germany, and the USA. The USSR was a Warsaw pact for the Pro Soviet Union countries. The Cold War was after WW2.The USA and the Soviet Union where rivals for world influence. The war was between communists and non communists. Slide 5 In 1948 under the Truman Doctrine, named after U.S president Harry S Truman, the US offered military aid to countries such as Greece and Turkey that were engaged in fighting organization (NATO) was formed to respond to possible attacks by the Soviet Union. In forming NATO, each member country agreed to treat an attack on any other member as an attack on itself. The NATO countries believe that the Soviet Union would not attack Western Europe if Soviet leads thought such an attack would trigger nuclear war with the United States. Slide 6 Soviet union built the wall to keep communists from escaping to American sector. The wall was torn down in 1989. Berlin is Germanys capital. Slide 7 Slide 8 Bombs: A nuclear bomb gave America a lead which was expected to last at least 5 years. Russian development of nuclear technology, helped by the work of the Atom spies was a shock. Slide 9 Significantly, Russia hurriedly declared war against Japan at the beginning of August 1945, and rush to advance into Asia to stake out a position for the post war settlement.
