FromOurPastor During a recent funeral luncheon, I was talking with Maryann Gapsis and one of the topics we discussed was the Fellowship Team’s work. So, I want to share some definitions and reflections on Fellowship and then Maryann’s description of our Fellowship Team’s purpose and work. So, first, fellowship as defined by Google dictionary:
“Friendly association, especially with people who share one's interests.” Synonyms – companionship, sociability, comradeship, camaraderie, friendship, mutual support; informal chumminess, togetherness, solidarity
“A group of people meeting to pursue a shared interest or aim.” Now, from a Bible perspective: According to Holman Bible Dictionary, fellowship is:
The bond of common purpose and devotion that binds Christians together and to Christ. “Fellowship” is the English translation of words from the Hebrew stem hbr and the Greek stem koin-. The Hebrew hbr was used to express ideas such as common or shared house (Prov. 21:9), “binding” or “joining” (Ex. 26:6; Eccl. 9:4), companion (Eccl. 4:10), and even a wife as a companion (Mal. 2:14). The Greek stem koin- has a base meaning of “common.” Nowhere in the Bible does Jesus use this stem, but certainly the way Jesus and his disciples lived in close relationship, sharing in common with each other, provided a model for such common living.
Koinonia was Paul’s favorite word to describe a believer’s relationship with the risen Lord and the benefits of salvation, which come through Him. Immediately after Paul spoke of “fellowship” with Christ through participation in the Lord’s Supper (1 Cor. 10:16), he said, “since there is one bread, we who are many are one body” (1 Cor. 10:17 NAS). This illustrates clearly Paul’s belief that fellowship with Christ was to grow into fellowship between believers. Koinonia with the Lord results not only in sharing His benefits (the gospel and the Holy Spirit), but also sharing His sufferings (Phil. 3:10; Col. 1:24). These texts express clearly just how intimate was Paul’s perception of the close relationship between the believer and the Lord. Paul believed that Christians were to share with one another what they had to offer to assist fellow believers, both joy and suffering. Like Paul, John also affirmed that koinonia was an important aspect of the Christian pilgrimage. He affirmed emphatically that fellowship with God and the Son was to result in fellowship with the other believers (1 John 1:3, 6-7).
Maryann shared: Church suppers and breakfasts might not seem very important in the scheme of things, but I think it is a vital ministry that gives people a chance to have "ownership" in helping with an event. Suppers are also a great way for inter-generational members of a congregation to mingle, get to know each other, and think of their church as not just a place to worship, but a place to be part of a community. And serving good food is always a bonus in these days when so many people don't cook anymore. The Fellowship team is represented at council by Marjie Haab and Ursula Yeo. The team is chaired by Maryann Gapsis. Members of the team are Mary Kay Grantland, Rich and Linda Filkins, Ally Wade, Cal Alt, Melanie Platt, Jane Bowie, and Jeanne Alker. Jeanne now chairs the Sunday breakfasts, making sure that supplies are kept in stock. And between Mary Kay and Jeanne, the upstairs kitchen has never been so clean or organized. The team was formed in 2005 when it was thought that we should expand the coffee and cake that was served between services into a ministry that would encourage the congregation to refresh and enjoy visiting with each other. Round tables were purchased and four teams of volunteers were formed to serve
and host a continental breakfast each and every Sunday. To give the volunteers a much-needed break, we ask for donations of juice and doughnuts during the summer. But the fellowship team also covers any church dinners and socials that are held. Next event will be the challenging "Men Who Cook" on Saturday, March 11, from 5-7 pm. We're hoping to have 15-20 men prepare their favorite dishes at home, bring them to church for sampling, and compete for prizes and "congregational acclaim." Then, we're going to have a Mother-Child event in May. It will be a tea, from 2-4 pm on Saturday, May 6. Ladies are invited to decorate a table with their own dishes and tea things. There are many other settings where fellowship is fostered to help building relationships with each other, which helps us build our relationship with God. I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming fellowship event,
