Phal. cornu-cervi fma. chattaladae

(the true chattaladae !)

(Rare color form of Species – Sib cross from Dr. David Grove made from the original species)

This is the genuine chattaladae form of

Phal. cornu-cervi from David Grove, owner of the only known plant of this

variety. NOTE: There are other red

forms of Phal. cornu-cervi being offered – but they are actually fma. rubescens or a

cross between fma. rubescens and possibly fma. chattaladae….all showing a hint of yellow in their lateral sepals and most with a yellow back to the flowers. Fma. chattaladae has a totally solid red back to its flowers with no hint of yellow

anywhere except the very tips of the lateral sepals & it retains its solid red

color, even on the fading flowers, whereas fma. rubescens will begin to

show yellow as the flowers fade.

summer-fall flowering. Its older spikes will continue to form buds & branch while still creating additional new spikes. And this clone readily makes basal & on-spike

keikis for the absolute best in a bright yellow FRAGRANT display !

Phal. hieroglyphica fma. alba

(Species: ‘Golden Promise’ AM/AOS x self)

The rare alba form of Phal. hieroglyphica which we find much more charming than the common white & burgundy form. For an alba form these have been extremely

vigorous growers & a few from this group have flowered already. Always leave the

previously flowered spike on the plant since they do tend to add additional buds

while making a new spike or two.

Not often available, this strain is the result of a sibbing of two select forms.

Very compact pendulous spikes produce small flowers cascading over or between

compact round leaves. Again, we’ve found this species does better in our

greenhouses when grown a little cooler & shadier.

Phal. mariae

(Rarely Available Species)

This species has all but disappeared in cultivation. Unfortunately, many plants

found their way into this country mislabeled as Phal. mariae when they

were actually Phal. bastianii. Phal. mariae is easily recognized by its gently cascading flower spikes, a slightly more cupped flower and bold blotching on its

creamy-white background. We’ve already flowered a few from this population last

July & it is the TRUE Phal. mariae. Will

re-flower from old spikes in addition to producing new.

flowered, still green, spikes on these plants since they continue to add more buds to that spike in addition to forming

new spikes.

‘Tara’ 4N

Phal. (Dor.) pulcherrima alba fma. champornensis ‘Tara’ – 4N

(Tetraploid Peloric form of Species)

This keiki is from a tetraploid (4N) population producing fuller flowers with a much more vividly colored & well-defined peloric splash on its petals ! Unlike the

diploid forms of this species, our 4N population is very slow to produce keikis,

making only one every 1-2 years. This particular clone was selected for its fuller flower, heavier substance & bold splash

patterning on the petals.

Additional Note: the clone ‘Tara’ has slightly more green to its yellow splash

than its siblings which are a rich golden-yellow.

MULTIFLORAL MINIATURES & COMPACT-GROWING BRIGHTLY COLORED NOVELTIES:

Again, most of these clones are the result of the excellent Taiwanese breeding programs.

Many of the plants below were hand-picked from select nurseries over the last several years on our annual trips to Taiwan.

PLEASE NOTE: With many of the harlequins & the red or orange novelties, differences in light & temperature at various times

of the year will cause some variation to occur in the flower color and/or intensity of their markings. Under warmer temperatures & more shaded conditions in the summer, many red hybrids with yellow or orange in their breeding background

will flower showing more of those colors. Under cooler temperatures & brighter light in the fall to winter months, the red pigment in the flowers is more strongly expressed resulting in solid red flowers.

Just awarded by our AOS Phalaenopsis Judging team at this year’s 2015 Taiwan

the harlequins we saw ! Producing 16 stunning and extremely full flat flowers, perfectly spaced on two inflorescences,

its over 4” flowers were dramatically marked with extremely crisp blackened-

Phal. Ebony Sweet Gem (prov.) ’Little Treasure’

(Orig: Phal. (Yu Pin Natsume x

Fuller’s Berry) ‘OX 1659’ Another clone using the great miniature

harlequin parent, Fuller’s Berry ! Combined with Yu Pin Natsume, it has

created cardboard-substance flowers that are almost black & are FRAGRANT…our

photo, shot at the show with a flash, doesn’t begin to capture how really

“almost black” these flowers are (due to the flash reflecting back to the camera).

They are really as “black” as the Fredclarkeara’s or the Millenium Magics

thanks to the rich harlequin pollen parent, Fuller’s Berry ! Mated with Yu Pin

Natsume, another heavily marked harlequin mini, its rich dark color is the result of layer upon layer of harlequin suffusion coming from both parents,

producing a thick flower with heavy color pigment and no hint of any other color.

These plants have already flowered once, producing 2 branching spikes in just a 2.7” pot and will continue to produce

flowers on previously bloomed spikes in addition to creating new…a couple which

were cut back just 2 months ago are already spiking again. A cutting-edge

“almost black” multi-floral mini !

extremely round well-balanced flowers on very compact branching spikes – its

FRAGRANT MINIATURE CHINESE CYMBIDIUMS:

All the species listed below grow & flower easily WITH our Phals under the same light & temperature conditions since they are miniature growing Chinese species, requiring much lower light, less space & will grow under warmer temperatures than their larger cousins ~ they also don’t require the extreme chill in order to make their flower spikes. Two of our clones in particular are just 6” in height – perfect for windowsill & under-lights growing ! As you will notice, we are particularly fond of the green & yellow flowering varieties with either delightfully compact or elegantly tall flower spikes. We’ve found that the traditional burgundy-brown color is just too muddy to stand out and make a statement. Several of these varieties also have the added charm of VARIEGATED FOLIAGE, meaning they’re attractive, even when not in flower ! Variegated foliage comes at a higher price because it’s greatly prized in Japanese & Chinese cultures, meaning the stronger the variegation, the more expensive the clone. Most of these clones/divisions came in recently, bare-rooted, and are now well-established in their moss pots – they are just now forming their new growths in preparation for flowering once again.

Habenaria rhodocheila

(Two different color forms of Species)

We have been amazed at how easy to grow that this Habenaria species has been ! Even when not in flower, their foliage is beautifully marked. We’ve

found that if we keep them just slightly moist with a light spritzing, not wet, when

they go deciduous, they produce their spring growths readily. Allowing them to

dry totally will most likely cause their loss over the winter – we know, we used

to follow the culture sheets & did just that – and they never came back ! We’ve also discovered that trying to grow them in a bark mix is more than challenging, so

we’ve switched to growing them in moss. This population has been extremely

vigorous & is well worth adding to every collection. Plus, despite our initial

doubts, they LOVE growing in the New Zealand moss ! We’ve been amazed at

how really easy Habenarias are to grow & flower – just don’t follow any of the

culture sheets & you’ll do great !

plant three years ago when we visited his nursery & were taken with its amazing floriferousness, its unique splash petal

flowers and heavy branching habit, even on first bloom seedlings. It dramatically stood out, even though tucked in among all his other pink & white miniatures, due to its boldly unique patterning. We were fortunate enough to be able to obtain a few plants from him since he usually doesn’t produce anything in quantity,

choosing instead to do a small number of Stem Props. Puts on the ultimate show of splash-petal excitement when in full

flower ! Award Quality !

Dtps. Liu’s Cute Angel ‘KF#32’

(Jiaho Cherry x Phal. lobbii)

One of the darkest & most stunning clones of this charming little hybrid from

Liu’s breeding program! Its deep pink flowers, produced on very compact

branching spikes, are set off by a brilliant broad orange-pink lip from the Phal.

lobbii parent. All clones of this hybrid have very compact leaf spans & are

vigorous growers ! Due to their breeding background with Phal. equestris and Dor. pulcherrima, they will naturally produce

terminal spikes – in this case, not an indication that the plant is having trouble or will die. They will continue to produce

additional lateral spikes & even more terminal spikes – and, when fully mature, will also form basal keikis ! We’ve had

several different clones of this little hybrid, both one-of-a-kind seedlings from

the cross and mericlones, & have observed this to be the fact over several

flowerings.

flowers are produced on readily branching & gracefully arching spikes.

Dtps. OX Firebird ‘Butterfly’

(OX Black Jack x Walnut Valley Halo)

With harlequin breeding coming into this hybrid from both parents, the actual

harlequin expression has varied from one clone of this hybrid to another. Although

its flowers are smaller in size than the clone ‘OX1277’, they still are large at

4”and slightly lighter in color than ‘OX1277’. We happen to love this

particular clone, ‘Butterfly’, for its heavy suffusion of the rich burgundy harlequin saturating most of its white background, leaving a splash of burgundy harlequin around all its segments. As a bonus, it naturally produces cascading waterfall

spikes !

One of the newest in stable harlequin breeding ! A wonderful mix of a multi-

floral mini candy striper in the background of OX Little King – and a great larger flowered harlequin pod

parent. As a result, the harlequin parent has taken the striping pattern from OX

Little King and “harlequinized” or emboldened its striping with heavy burgundy spotting, creating flowers

reaching almost 4” in size. Its naturally cascading inflorescence, with perfectly

shingled flowers, merely adds to its impact.

Another great clone of Phal. OX Lucky Boy – and in our opinion, this clone is

even better than the first clone we awarded last year – this year it was

shown & was given a well-deserved high AM/AOS. As the photo shows, the form is much fuller with the petals touching ~ and the lip is just as brilliant a golden-

yellow and as broad as the awarded clone ~ of these two clones, this is our #1

pick. From the fact that our first-bloomers already produced 2 spikes in just a 2.7” pot, we know that when they

grow up their display will be as floriferous as the awarded clone ‘OX 1587’, which carried 69 flowers on 4

branched inflorescences !
