• Renaissance means “rebirth of learning”.– Italy - home to the great civilization of the Romans – Old monuments and statues. – How did they do this? Surely not the German

- Southern England and Northern France as they fought over the French throne. - War is very hard on country side and its people, they suffer miserably. - Famine, constant robbing, burning fields, rape, and murder of commoners by both armies.

Bubonic plague caused the displacement of millions of peasants. Entire cities were emptied.

2. Rise of merchants, bankers, money- You had to earn your social rank though hard work and intelligence. - Your birth no longer mattered near as much. - Trade was critical to get what you needed in the cities, thus the merchants grew very rich.

- Artist and scholars in Italy wanted to know, how??? They researched old Latin manuscripts preserved by monasteries. When the great city of Constantinople fell to the Turks in 1453 AD, their scholars fled to Rome with tons of ancient Greek manuscripts.

Humanism is: Deep interest in what people had achieved and could achieve.

- Scholars and artist looked at what the Greek and Roman did, and asked why can’t we do that? What is man capable of? They were tired of the dirty, squalor, and “baseness” of the Middle Ages. They wanted more from life.

Constantinople due to the Ottoman menace in 1453.   They took with them many books and manuscripts written in Greek. Great Silk Road to China now in Muslim hands.

organize food shipments, trade routes are secured, peace and order. You can get “off the farm” and move into the “big city”. Once again you can reliably get food for your family again, find work to support them financially.

Be Civilized! Not sleep with Pigs!
