Israel ‘strikes Damascus

military complex’Damascus

Israeli warplanes have fired missiles at a Syrian military

position near the capital, Damascus, Syrian media report.

A Syrian military statement said its air defence systems blocked most of the missiles, but gave no further details.

A monitor said ammunition depots in Jamraya were hit. It is the location of a scientific facility where the West

suspects chemical weapons are produced.

Israel, which has acknowledged carrying out at least 100 clandestine strikes in Syria since 2011, declined to comment.

Many of the Israeli strikes are believed to been aimed at preventing transfers of advanced weapons to the Lebanese Hezbollah movement.

The Iran-backed group

fought a war with Israel in 2006 and has sent thousands of fighters to Syria to support President Bashar al-Assad’s forces. The Syrian military statement said Israeli warplanes had fired several missiles from inside Lebanese airspace at a military position in the Damascus countryside at 03:42 (01:42 GMT) on Wednesday.

“The general command of the armed forces holds

Israel fully responsible for the dangerous consequences of its repeated, aggressive and uncalculated adventures,” it added.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, said some of the missiles struck ammunition depots in Jamraya. The area - also known as Dummar - is home to several military facilities but also a branch of the Scientific

Studies and Research Centre (SSRC).

A Western intelligence agency told the BBC last year that three branches of the SSRC, including the one at Jamraya, were being used to produce chemical munitions in violation of a deal that saw Mr Assad agree to destroy his chemical arsenal after a deadly Sarin attack in Damascus in 2013.

The SSRC is promoted by

the Syrian government as a civilian research institute but the US accuses the agency of focusing on the development of non-conventional weapons and the means to deliver them. Wednesday’s missile strike came after medics and Western powers accused Syrian government forces of dropping bombs filled with chlorine on rebel-held areas six times over the past month.(BBC)

Bahrain Human Rights Watch Society (BHRWS)

yesterday called upon the international community to put pressure on Iran to end that country’s support to terror groups in Bahrain.

“The Iranian regime and the terrorist Revolutionary Guards are responsible for these acts of terror. They’re also responsible for the training, sheltering and financing of terrorism against Bahrain,”

BHRWS said, referring to the arrest of suspects involved in the terrorist attack on the Bahrain-Saudi pipeline in Buri last November.

The human rights society demanded the international community to “bear its responsibilities, combat the Iranian regime and impose strict sanctions on it”.

Faisal Fulad, the BHRWS General Secretary, demanded in the statement that the political, religious, military and intelligence leaders of the Iranian regime should be presented before the

International Criminal Court.Fulad said that the BHRWS

observed with concern the the Interior ministry’s statement, which revealed that investigations’ results linked the arrested to the Iran-backed “February 14 Coalition” terrorist group. The Interior Ministry yesterday revealed the arrest of four people in connection with the Buri pipeline explosion yesterday.

The Society praised the efforts of the different security authorities to protect citizens and residents of the Kingdom of Bahrain from terrorist

crimes orchestrated by Iran.DT News reported last

November that the attack on the pipeline occurred in a highly populated area in Buri.

The fire lasted for ours causing no injuries among the residents of the village and only damaging nearby homes and vehicles. Civil Defence firefighters, who reached the scene in three minutes, evacuated all residents and secured the area. 12 houses were damaged in the incident, while four shops and 28 vehicles were also damaged because of the heat.

Women’s Day 2018 will be devoted to honouring women

in the legislative field and municipal work, Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of HM the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), said yesterday.

Chairing the second meeting of the SCW’s sixth session, held here, HRH Princess Sabeeka voiced pride in the Bahraini women’s landmark achievements and gains emanating from NAC’s core principles, stressing that the SCW is proud of being one of NAC’s main fruits.

HRH Princess Sabeeka extended sincere congratulations to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa on the 17th Anniversary of the National Action Charter.

Bahrain women’s involvement in municipal work goes back to the 1920s when they took part in the first municipal elections held by Bahrain then, HRH Princess Sabeeka said.

The theme was also chosen to celebrate 20 years since Bahraini women entered the appointed Shura Council, and 15 years after their access to the elected Representatives Council and municipal councils.

The SCW said that in 2001, Bahraini women started enjoying their full political rights through the National Action Charter and the 2002 Constitution.

HRH Princess Sabeeka affirmed that this year’s theme reflects the great achievements attained by Bahraini women through their

effective presence in the legislative and municipal councils, and well as their ability to enhance their contributions to public affairs and be involved effectively in political work.

In this regard, Princess Sabeeka cited Bahraini women’s qualitative contributions to preparing the National Action Charter, as well as to national efforts to follow up on implementing its provisions.

HRH Princess Sabeeka pointed out that honouring Bahraini women in the legislative field and municipal work coincides with the forthcoming municipal and parliamentary elections to be held in the kingdom later this year, expressing confidence that the move will highlight Bahraini women’s honourable image and milestone achievements in the legislative and municipal fields.

It is also an opportunity to shed light on the political maturity of the Bahraini society, whose members showed confidence in the Bahraini women’s ability to exercise their role as fully eligible citizens, HRH Princess Sabeeka said, stressing the importance of effective participation of all relevant parties in honouring women in the legislative and municipal fields.

On the occasion SCW Secretary-General Hala Al-Ansari stated that the SCW, within its efforts to implement the National Plan for the Advancement of Bahraini Women, and integrating them in the national development programmes, has achieved 77per cent of the requirements of National Model for

Integrating Bahraini Women’s Needs in Development, and will continue the remaining requirements through the activation of the “Knowledge Management” and “Impact Measurement” themes.

The meeting endorsed a national report that monitors Bahraini women’s progress in state departments.

Al-Ansari added that the SCW, as part of its efforts to boost knowledge-based economy, has approved an electronic knowledge database for gender balance indicators to measure

local, regional and international competitiveness rates in order to bridge gaps, and enhance Bahrain’s standing in the field of women advancement.

Princess Sabeeka also pointed out that the SCW was informed about the efforts being exerted to activate the mechanisms of the Bahraini women’s political participation programme, and approved an integrated programme for electoral preparation ahead of the forthcoming parliamentary and municipal elections.

The SCW Secretary-General renewed the kingdom’s commitment to submitting its fourth national report on the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) to the relevant UN committee.

HRH Princess Sabeeka approved the report, which will be forwarded through the official channels, in line with the SCW’s keenness on honouring the kingdom’s pledges regarding international women-related conventions.

The authorities have closed down an oriental nightclub in

a hotel here over violations termed “harmful” to national tourism.

The action was taken after Industry, Commerce and Tourism Minister Zayid bin Rashid Al Zayani instructed to revoke the tourism license of the facility in the four-star hotel as “the hotel violated the tourism norms and legislations in a way that’s harmful to national tourism”.

Published in the Official Gazette on Thursday, the resolution included that the outlet was closed as per the recommendations of Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority CEO Shaikh Khalid bin Humood Al Khalifa.

The minister announced a similar decision to take strict procedures against 14 violating tourism outlets last December.

The outlets included first class restaurants, bars, lounges and night clubs in a number of four and five star hotels in Juffair, Seef, Manama and other areas.

According to Decree Law 15 of 1986, violating establishments would be subjected to imprisonment not exceeding three months and fines not exceeding BD500 or one of these two punishments.

DT News reported last month that the Council of Representatives recently passed a bill to increase the punishments to imprisonment not exceeding six months, and fines not less than BD10, 000 and not exceeding BD50, 000, in a bid to curb rule violations at tourism outlets.

Challenges in LifeHaving a vision of where you are heading in life is

crucial. It applies to all aspects of your daily being, from the personal to family to work and, last but not least, your relationships.

But the big vision at the end of the tunnel can get overwhelming if we don’t focus on where we’re going and get lost somewhere in between. For me, family, relationships, and personal health and well-being were on the right track, the problem was my career and self-development. Believing that I must be here for a purpose has driven me to take up so many challenges throughout my journey in life so far, to prove something; as if I compete with myself all the time. My most recent adventure was participating in a half marathon, and challenging myself to see whether or not I could finish it.I went to the start point with zero knowledge of what goes on or what to expect. I was so occupied with finishing the race that I was not ready at all for what hit me next. At the start, the fear of not being left alone and behind made me run a faster pace than my normal one, so I wasn’t in the moment and enjoying what I was experiencing for the first time.

After a while, I noticed that an experienced runner was trying his best not to leave me behind as he started giving me hints on what is coming up next and encouraging me throughout the run to keep going as I was doing well so far. His mentoring helped me run to the midpoint which I originally had set as my first goal to achieve when I started the marathon. It wasn’t until then that I realized I was keeping him behind his own pace, so I thanked him for his support and let him know that I was doing well and that he should go ahead and continue to enjoy the run at his own pace.It was at this moment that I snapped myself back into the present and remembered that it was my first time participating in a new experience. I stopped trying to figure out how to get it over with and began actually enjoying the experience. The sensation of being alone was so liberating that I already started savoring the sweet taste of achievement and of having raced past another challenge in my life’s journey. That was the moment that I started noticing the amazing blue color of the sea surrounding me, the cool breeze hitting my face, the birds flying freely high above, and the exhilarating sense of achieving another goal in life. Our lives are full of a combination of challenges that we set for ourselves to face and aim to overcome. Once we have decided to tackle a challenge, it means it’s time for it to be tested and passed, to move on to the next one.We will never know the outcome of our encounters unless we take part in them and defy all their challenges and do our best to confront them one by one. We find out in each encounter that there are individuals who are meant to be part of what we are going through at that moment as mentors, supporters, and caregivers, as a sign for us not to give up.One has to be an achiever and never settle until they’ve overcome all the obstacles and hurdles of each challenge to reach the finish line and start a new one. It’s human nature to crave growth more than anything. So as not to lose sight of the growth in our life’s journey, we should not look too far ahead. We should focus on the works along the path instead of setting our sight to the endpoint that is at the end of the tunnel, so far away that it might make us lose hope and give up early in life. Therefore, the next time you’re facing a challenge in life and find yourself skeptical on how far you can go, sit for a moment and recall how far you have come. Reminisce about everything you have tackled, all the battles you have won, all the lovely people who appeared along your path mysteriously to support you, and all the uncertainties you have overcome. Only then will you be ready to dive into your next challenge and do your utmost to conquer it.

Iraqi forces attack IS remnants in desert region

Tuz Khurmatu, Iraq

Iraqi forces backed by the US-led coalition began a

major operation Wednesday against Islamic State (IS) group jihadists hiding out in a northeastern desert region, the military said.

The army, rapid intervention forces and paramilitaries, in coordination with Kurdish fighters and with Iraqi and coalition air cover, launched the operation east of Tuz Khurmatu “to chase away IS remnants,” said Iraq’s Security Information Centre.

Iraqi forces retook several villages and stormed an IS

camp, according to the rapid intervention forces.

The operation met no initial resistance, an AFP journalist at the scene said.

Iraq declared victory against IS in December, more than three years after the

extremist group seized a third of its territory and swathes of neighbouring Syria, declaring a “caliphate” ruling over millions of people.

Jihadists are still active, however, and there have been several attacks against

government forces in the Khurmatu region.

Authorities have blamed not just IS but also pro-independence Kurds accused of seeking revenge for the takeover by government forces of Kirkuk province, in particular the expulsion of many Kurds from the Tuz Khurmatu area.

The town is home to a mixed Kurdish, Arab and Turkmen population. It was the scene of deadly violence in mid-October when Iraqi forces retook it in response to a Kurdish independence referendum. (AFP)

Conditions met for visa free travel: Turkey to EUAnkara

Turkey said yesterday it had fulfilled all

conditions on visa-free travel to Europe, adding it hoped Brussels would respond and lend “momentum” to better ties between Ankara and the EU.

As part of a controversial agreement signed in March 2016, the EU offered Ankara billions of euros and visa liberalisation in exchange for Turkey stemming the flow of migrants after Europe’s worst refugee crisis since World War II.

But Turkey has long been irritated that Brussels has not yet approved visa liberalisation because of its continued calls for Ankara to reform its anti-terror laws.

“The 72 criteria for visa-free travel have been completed,” presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin told reporters in Ankara, saying Turkey had informed the EU.

“We hope and expect that this will add new

momentum to Turkey-EU relations.”

Kalin hailed the development, saying “from today we can say there is a new process”.

Kalin did not elaborate on how Turkey intended to satisfy the EU on anti-terror laws. (AFP)

Fancy number plate buyer in jail for issuing dud chequeAbu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi Appeal Court on Monday upheld the three-year jail

sentence awarded to a businessman who bought a fancy car number plate in a special auction but issued a dud cheque for Dh31 million.

The 33-year-old Emirati businessman bought the Abu Dhabi No. 1 licence plate in November 2016 at the Vanity Number Plate Auction commemorating Abu Dhabi government’s golden jubilee at Emirates Palace hotel in the capital. The cheque he gave the organisers for Dh31 million bounced on submission.

Earlier, the Abu Dhabi Misdemeanours Court had sentenced him to three years in jail after he was found guilty of fraud and issuing a dud cheque.

The prosecutors charged him with fraud and issuing a dud cheque after he admitted to being aware of the insufficient balance in his bank account when he issued the cheque. (gulfnews)

Elon Musk’s Falcon rocket soars to space

Cape Canaveral

The world’s most powerful rocket, SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy, blasted off Tuesday on its highly anticipated

maiden test flight, carrying CEO Elon Musk’s cherry red Tesla Roadster toward an orbit near Mars.

Screams and cheers erupted at mission control in Cape Canaveral, Florida as the massive rocket fired its 27 engines and rumbled into the blue sky over the same NASA launchpad that served as a base for the US missions to the Moon four decades ago.

“The mission went as well as one could have hoped,” an ecstatic Musk told reporters, calling it “probably the most exciting thing I have seen literally ever.”

“I had this image of a giant explosion on the pad with a wheel bouncing down the road with the Tesla logo landing somewhere,” he said. “Fortunately that is not what happened.”

Loaded with Musk’s red Tesla and a mannequin in a spacesuit, the monster rocket’s historic test voyage captured the world’s imagination.

SpaceX’s webcast showed the Tesla Roadster soaring into space, as David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” played in the background -- with the words “DON’T PANIC” visible on the dashboard, in an apparent nod to the sci-fi series the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.”

The Roadster was also outfitted with a data storage unit containing Isaac Asimov’s science fiction book series, the Foundation Trilogy, and a plaque bearing the names of 6,000 SpaceX employees.

Musk posted a live video showing the “Starman” mannequin appearing to cruise, its gloved hand on the wheel, through the darkness of space, with the Earth’s image reflected on the car’s glossy red surface.

He tweeted late Tuesday night that the rocket’s upper stage had made a successful final burn, sending the car and its mannequin passenger out of Earth’s orbit, into an orbit around the Sun that brings it close to Mars.

After surviving a five-hour journey through the Van Allen Belt -- a region of high radiation -- the car now embarks on a journey through space that could last a billion years and take it as far as 400 million km from Earth, the same as a trip around the equator 10,000 times. (AFP)

Chinese police don high-tech glasses to nab suspectsBeijing

Chinese police are sporting high-tech sunglasses that

can spot suspects in a crowded train station, the newest use of facial recognition technology that has drawn concerns among human rights groups.

In a scene reminiscent of the dystopian sci-fi television show “Black Mirror”, officers in the central city of Zhengzhou are wearing the digital shades amid the crush of travellers heading home during Chinese New Year, the busiest time for the country’s transit system.

So far, the technology has allowed police to nab seven suspects accused of crimes ranging from human trafficking to hit and runs, as well as another 26 people who were using fake IDs, according to the state-owned People’s Daily, quoting the city’s police

department. The system is part of China’s

efforts to build a digital surveillance system able to use a variety of biometric data -- from photos and iris scans to fingerprints -- to keep close tabs on the movements of the entire population.

The rapid development of the technology has triggered a demand for commercial applications of the technology as well, with gyms, restaurants and even public toilets getting in on the facial recognition game.

The special glasses are being used by four officers positioned at the entrances to Zhengzhou’s east station, according to the People’s Daily.

The glasses have a camera connected to a smartphone-like device that allows the officers to take mugshots of

suspicious individuals and compare them to a database back at headquarters.

The app brings up the suspect’s vital information, including name, ethnicity, gender and address.

It also tells officers whether the possible perps are on the run from the law, the address of the hotel where they are staying and information related to their internet usage. (AFP)

Life without technology

One fine morning there is a sound of a cock crowing cock-a-doodle doo, waking

me up from my sleep. I woke up to see my house looking very different. I see my mother cooking on a chulha not a stove. Everything has changed; there is no T.V to watch, no PS4 to play. My mother rushes me to get ready for school. I even go to school on my bicycle. When I reached school we were supposed to sit on mats not on tables or chairs. We were learning from black boards not smart boards, the teachers used chalks and not markers. When it was time to go down for assembly a man took a triangle bell and hit it, there was no electrical bell. We went down for the assembly as there was no mics. After the school ended I went back home on my bicycle again. When I reached home it was 5:30! It was getting dark so my mother took a kerosene lamp and a match stick and lit the kerosene lamp as there was no light bulb. As it was cold and there was no heater, we had to make bon-fires outside our house and after all this I realised that we was living in mud houses. When I looked outside the streets was empty without any cars, instead there were bullock carts. People were walking around with kerosene lamps as there was no street lights and the shops outside also used kerosene lamps. My brother and I were playing on the empty streets with our friends and the stray dog. When my mother called me and my brother to have dinner we had to sit on the floor for dinner, even the glass I used was made of wood. Soon it was time to sleep but as I was dozing off I suddenly got an awake call from my mom’s smartphone. I woke up to see that everything was back to normal. I saw smartphones, microwaves, T.V, Computers etc. Then I realised I was dreaming, this dream turned out to be horrifying. I totally agree that we are living in a time of technology but there was a time totally opposite where nothing was dependent on technology and life was actually hard and very different from today. There was no technology in the olden times but there was a lot of free time for innovation and free thinking. It is those who used their free time well, who have made our current lives easier and faster.

In an Instagram post, Kylie posted an image of her holding her daughter’s hand with the caption: “Stormi”, reports the thesun.co.uk.

Although Kylie and her boyfriend Travis Scott have yet to reveal the reason they chose the moniker, some baby name websites say the name means having “charm” and being able to “attract money”.

Another website claims Stormi means someone who is a “free spirit” and has the “biggest heart”.

Kylie announced on Sunday that her child with Scott was born on February 1 and apologised for keeping her pregnancy secret

“We’ve done those films, the same story, so they won’t do that again. Unless Erica keeps writing, but Dakota (Johnson) and I are... Particularly me, I’m gettin’ too old for... For this,” Dornan said. The actor said he likes how his character

Actor Jordan Peele says he will “seriously

consider” a sequel to his hit film “Get Out”.

“Get Out”, a horror film centred on an inter-racial relationship between a black American man and his white partner, was a satire on racism and it was critically lauded.

The director has said that while he has received a lot of feedback on the film, hearing audiences relate to the feeling of “the sunken place” has been the most meaningful, reports hollywoodreporter.com. “When you create something like that, it’s very personal and meaningful, but to hear that people kind of related to that feeling and needed it to be named has been very touching for me,” Peele said. At some point, Jean-Claude Van Damme

must’ve thought that if Sylvester Stallone can revive Rocky Balboa and introduce him to a new generation with Creed, certainly he could do that with one of his characters. That could explain why he produced and co-starred in Kickboxer: Vengeance, a straight-up remake of 1989’s Kickboxer. In Vengeance, he assumed the Stallone role as the wise trainer-mentor, while stuntman

Alain Moussi stepped in his role as avenging fighter Kurt Sloane.

Now, just as the original begat a bunch of ridiculous sequels, Vengeance has now given us Kickboxer: Retaliation, which is all kinds of what-the-f***. For Chrissakes, the movie begins with an elaborate, dream/fight sequence on a train that Moussi’s Sloane is having in the middle of an MMA fight. Things get more crazy from there when

Sloane gets kidnapped and thrown in a Bangkok jail by a fight promoter (Christopher Lambert, both oily and greasy) who agrees to get him out only if Sloane fights to the death a behemoth, roided-up man-beast (Game of Thrones strongman Hafpór Júlíus Björnsson). Thankfully, Van Damme’s (now-blind) mentor is there to train him, along with Mike Tyson, who shows up out of nowhere as an incarcerated, Zen-like bruiser. (villagevoice)

Take the time to consider your physical and mental health today. Given your hard-driving nature, these are areas that may be neglected. One really affects the other. If you overwork your brain or put off dealing with problems, your physical health will suffer. Things like excess weight, and bouts of depression are all indicators.

It’s the perfect day to do some planning. Take the time on a regular basis to think about the things you want to do and accomplish. It’s essential for feeling you have control over your life. It can be almost impossible to reach your goals without a concrete plan. Just as you wouldn’t build a house without a plan, it isn’t wise to build a life without one either.

Today is a good day to think about your ambitions. Considering what you really want out of life can be instrumental in setting goals and making dreams come true. Reaching them can often be as simple as making a decision and taking that first step. For example, if your dream is to have your ideal partner, and you’re with someone who isn’t, the practical choice is to end the current relationship. You might be feeling a bit more hesitant than usual when it comes to making decisions. Even if someone accuses you of being distrustful, it’s your sense of caution that saves you a lot of grief. If a person or situation has you feeling sceptical, there is probably a good reason for it.

You may feel that you have to defend your motives today, and this can really put you off, especially if you can’t see a reason for it. Try not to take it personally. Just because you know where you’re coming from doesn’t mean the other person does. It may simply be a communication problem.

Is there a person in your life who keeps coming to mind again and again? If so, it might be time to get together. Whether there’s something that needs to be worked out or you simply miss him or her, take the steps needed to connect, even if it takes email, letters, or a phone call to get in touch. Rather than having them pop into your head continuously, reach out and make contact.

Your usual outgoing and often radical nature may be far more conservative today. This can be a result of the day’s planetary influences, and if used well, this mood can prove most beneficial. It can add seriousness to your day that suits such activities as goal setting, budget planning, or recovery.

Focus on yourself today. Yours is often an extremely giving nature. You can be compassionate to a fault, in that too much of your energy goes to helping solve others’ problems. Then you’re left without enough focus for yourself and the things that are troubling you. See about spending some time alone to concentrate on any issues you have.

It would be wise to spend some time thinking about your finances today. Do you have a realistic budget, or does yours exclude such things as entertainment, gifts, and occasional splurges? Such a budget won’t suffice, because these are expenses that everyone has. Take a good look at your spending habits and see where you could cut back without too much pain.

Today is an excellent day to set some new goals. When was the last time you did this? Many think that New Year’s Day and birthdays are prime times to make resolutions or set goals, yet this is something that can be done any time. In fact, it’s advisable to renew, rename, and revamp ambitions on a regular basis, since life brings constant change to circumstances. Pull out some paper and jot your ideas down.

Another person will probably bring you much comfort today. It could be someone you know well, but chances are it will be someone you’d least expect to be there for you. With your tendency to keep to yourself and be on the quiet side, you may not always notice those around you. Yet this doesn’t mean that they don’t notice you.

You may find yourself feeling more aggressive than normal today. This can serve you well when it comes to getting what you want, provided no one suffers in the process. It isn’t generally in your nature to step on anyone on the way up the ladder, and you aren’t likely to feel good if this occurs. Look at all possible ways to attain your goals.

Pyeongchang, South Korea

Pyeongchang Olympic organisers were

scrambling Wednesday to prevent an outbreak of the highly contagious norovirus spreading to athletes after the number of cases nearly tripled overnight.

No athletes are among the 86 confirmed cases so far and officials at the Winter Games say they are doing everything they can to ensure it stays that way, two days before the Olympics open.

Any illness spreading to the competitors -- particularly one of the star

names -- would be a major embarrassment to hosts South Korea.

Underlining growing concerns about the spread of the stomach bug, which causes diarrhoea and vomiting, the Korean Centre for Disease Control and Prevention held a press conference to outline what steps it was taking.

“As of February 6 we had 32 cases, but today... we have an additional confirmed 54 cases so in total we have 86 cases of norovirus,” said the centre’s director Kim Hyun-Jun. (AFP)

Hualien, Taiwan

Rescuers combed the rubble of collapsed

buildings on Wednesday, in a search for about 60 people missing after a strong earthquake killed at least six near Taiwan’s popular tourist city of Hualien.

The magnitude 6.4 quake, which hit near the coastal city just before midnight on Tuesday, also injured 258 people and collapsed four buildings, officials said.

Hualien Mayor Fu Kun-chi said the number of people missing was now close to 60,

although an exact figure was not provided. As many as 150 were initially feared missing.

Many of the missing were believed to be still trapped inside buildings, some of which were tilting precariously, after the quake hit about 22 km northeast of Hualien on Taiwan’s east coast.

At the city’s Marshal Hotel, rescuers trying to free two trapped Taiwanese pulled out one alive, but the other person was declared dead, the government said. (Reuters)

India is investigating claims an unlicensed

doctor infected at least 46 people with HIV by re-using syringes, the latest case to expose the paucity of healthcare in the country of 1.25 billion.

Police in Uttar Pradesh have registered a criminal case against Rajendra Yadav, who provided cheap door-to-door medical services to poor villagers in the northern state.

India has only limited public healthcare services

and that, combined with a lack of regulation, has allowed unlicensed doctors to thrive, particularly in rural areas.

The latest case was exposed when government medical screenings uncovered a high concentration of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases in the Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh.

“All these 46 cases are from specific localities within our district,” Unnao’s chief medical officer S.P. Choudhary told AFP. (AFP)

Seoul

The sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-

Un will visit the South this week for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, Seoul said Wednesday -- the first member of its ruling family ever to do so.

Kim Yo-Jong, who is a senior member of the ruling Workers’ Party, will be part of a high-level delegation due Friday and led by the North’s ceremonial head of state, the unification ministry said.

The two Koreas have been divided by the Demilitarized Zone since the end of the Korean War in 1953, and Pyongyang’s pursuit of nuclear weapons have seen it

subjected to multiple rounds of United Nations Security Council sanctions.

Tensions soared last year as the North carried out multiple weapons tests, including intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the US mainland, and by far its most powerful nuclear test to date.

But the Olympics have triggered a rapid rapprochement on the peninsula.

“It is highly significant that a member of the Kim family is coming to the South for the first time in history,” said professor Yang Moo-Jin of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul.

She was likely to meet

South Korean President Moon Jae-In and give him a personal letter from her brother, expressing his hopes for a successful hosting of the Olympics and desire to improve inter-Korean ties, he added.

“This will mark Kim Yo-Jong’s debut on the international stage,” Yang told AFP. “She is being groomed as one of the North’s most powerful figures by her brother.”

Kim Yo-Jong, believed to be aged about 30, was promoted in October to be an alternate member of the party’s powerful politburo, the decision-making body presided over by her brother. (AFP)

‘World’s loneliest bird’ Nigel dies in New ZealandWellington

New Zealand wildlife lovers are mourning the death

of a gannet named Nigel, dubbed “the loneliest bird in the world” due to the absence of any feathered friends on his island home.

Instead the seabird, also known as “no-mates Nigel”, spent years living among a colony of fake concrete birds set up by conservationists in a bid to attract wildlife.

The antisocial avian fell in love with one of the decoys on Mana Island, off the Wellington coast, and was seen preening, nestling and even

trying to mate with it.“Nigel chose to live on

Mana, and we know he was happy there because he could

have left any time and didn’t,” Department of Conservation ranger Chris Bell said Wednesday. (AFP)

India trample

SA again

Cape Town

An all-round show saw India crush South Africa by 124

runs in the third ODI in Cape Town yesterday as they took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the three-match series. The wristspinners again spelled the doom for the hosts as the pair of Kuldeep Yadav (4/23) and Yuzvendra Chahal (4/46) shared eight wickets to bowl out South Africa for 179 in chase of 304.

It was a comprehensive performance from the visitors who, for the first time, recorded a third consecutive win in a bilateral series in South Africa. The hosts never looked in the hunt as regular strikes pushed them on the backfoot with the spinners bossing over their batsmen.

South Africa chase started on the wrong foot with Jasprit Bumrah trapping opener Hashim Amla with his first delivery of the innings in the second over. Captain Aiden Markram (32) and JP Duminy (51) attempted to resurrect the chase with a decent 78-run stand before the slide began.

Markram was outfoxed completely to be stumped off Kuldeep in the 17th over and following that the spinners tightened their stranglehold in the middle overs. Duminy, who returned to form with his 25th ODI fifty, soon followed when Chahal joined the fun trapping the well-set batsman in the 22nd over.

While Indian innings found a rock in Virat Kohli who scored a magnificent unbeaten 160 to help them breach the 300-run mark, there was no such luck for South Africa. They weren’t allowed to build any partnerships and the rising pressure combined with the spinning deliveries, contributed to a quick end.

Debutant Heinrich Klaasen lasted six runs while David Miller tried settling in before Jasprit Bumrah returned to have him out caught behind on 25 as South Africa lost half their side on 129.

The last five wickets fell for the addition of just 50 with Chahal and Kuldeep inflicting the damage. (TOI)

Maxwell century powers Australia to victory

Hobart

Glenn Maxwell slammed a last-ball six to score a masterful

century and lead Australia to a five-wicket victory over England in the second tri-series Twenty20 international in Hobart yesterday.

Maxwell, who earlier took three wickets in two overs, was man of the match with an unbeaten 103 as the Australians chased down England’s 155 for nine in the 19th over.

Maxwell, who was controversially dropped from Australia’s one-day team for the recent series against England, responded with a 58-ball century including 10 fours and four sixes at Bellerive Oval.

“It was nice to get one over the rope and finish the job,” Maxwell said. “For us to start the series the way we have has been outstanding. We haven’t had a lot of success in T20 cricket for the last few years.

“Missing out on the one-day squad and not playing any part in the Ashes, it was obviously where I

wanted to be this summer.Maxwell had a big moment on

59 when his lofted drive found the fingertips of long-off fielder Jason Roy.

But Maxwell stood his ground and although umpire Gerald Abood’s soft signal was out, the television umpire deemed Roy did not complete the catch.

Australia had a rocky start to their run chase when David Willey dismissed David Warner and Chris Lynn in the space of three balls. But Maxwell rebuilt the innings with stands with D’Arcy Short (30), Travis Head (6) and Alex Carey (5 not out) to secure victory.

Willey finished with three wickets for 28 off three overs.

England, troubled by Australia’s spinners, lost their last six wickets for 33 in registering a below-par total of 155.

Dawid Malan cracked 50 off 36 balls with five fours and two sixes but England fell away after reaching 94 for two in the 10th over. (AFP)

GB sprinter Nigel Levine suspendedLondon

British Olympic sprinter Nigel Levine has been

provisionally suspended for failing a drugs test.

It was reported in December the 28-year-old had allegedly tested positive for the banned asthma drug clenbuterol.

Levine will be offered a UK Anti-Doping hearing to defend himself.

The European indoor gold medallist has not competed

since he broke his pelvis in a motorbike crash in Spain in January 2017, an accident which also involved compatriot James Ellington.

He was also part of Britain’s 4x400m relay team at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Clenbuterol is on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list because it is deemed a p e r f o r m a n c e - e n h a n c i n g drug and can induce weight-loss. (BBC)

Paris St Germain’s sparkling forward Angel

Di Maria scored a hat-trick as the holders won 4-1 at second-tier Sochaux to reach the French Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday.

Argentine Di Maria opened the scoring with a first-minute header for the Ligue 1 leaders, who are aiming for their fourth French Cup triumph in a row. However,

Sochaux’s Florian Martin quickly levelled with a left-foot finish in the 13th.

PSG’s Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani converted Layvin Kurzawa’s cross to restore the visitors’ lead after 27 minutes and Di Maria put the result beyond doubt after the break.

The Argentina international caught Sochaux keeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi off guard at his near post with a precise left-foot finish after 59 minutes and then scored on the

rebound after Cavani’s effort was parried into his path three minutes later.

Olympique de Marseille thrashed Ligue 2 side Bourg-en-Bresse 9-0 to reach the last eight with Greek striker Konstantinos M i t r o g l o u and Argentine w i n g e r Lucas Ocampos bagging hat-tricks. (Reuters)

Kingsley C o m a n

had a goal and an assist and Arjen Robbed added a late brace as Bayern Munich cruised into the semifinals of the DFB Pokal with a 6-0 win away to Paderborn on Tuesday.

Robert Lewandowski, Joshua Kimmich and Corentin Tolisso

also scored before Robben got in on the action as Bayern reached the semis for the ninth consecutive season.

Third-division Paderborn had their share of chances and had a

goal ruled out for offside in the eighth minute, but Bayern took the lead in the 19th minute.

Thomas Muller ran onto a lobbed pass in the box and volleyed the ball back to the centre, and though Robben scuffed his attempt at a

right-footed shot, Coman was

on hand to slot home the loose ball.Bayern doubled their lead six

minutes later when Coman slipped the ball into the box to Lewandwoski, who showed good control to bring the ball down with his chest before slotting home.

It wasn’t all good news for Bayern as Muller suffered a knock in the build-up to the first goal and had to be replaced by Tolisso.

The third goal came soon before half-time as Kimmich beat first the offside trap and then the opposing goalkeeper at his near post.

Ten minutes after the break, Tolisso headed home following a James Rodriguez corner to make it 4-0.

Paderborn were left shaking their heads as Ben Zolinski hit the post and Phillip Tietz could not finish off a pass in the box with the goal gaping.

But Robben scored a trademark left-footed curler from the top of the box for Bayern’s fifth goal with four minutes to play, then had the simplest of tap-ins to cap the victory. (Espn)

Sanchez accepts deal for tax fraud

London

Manchester United striker Alexis Sanchez has accepted a 16-month suspended jail sentence for tax fraud in return for avoiding a

trial. The ex-Barcelona player faced going to trial in Spain over unpaid

taxes amounting to around 1m euro (£886,000).The unpaid taxes derive from image rights deals in 2012 and 2013.When Sanchez, 29, was first accused in 2016, his agent said the

Chile forward had “fully obeyed” laws and his image rights income “has been declared”.

Sanchez, who joined United from Arsenal last month, is rumoured to be the highest paid player in the Premier League following the transfer, earning £14m a year after tax.

He is one of a number of high-profile players to have fallen foul of the tax laws in Spain.

Last month, Real Madrid’s Croatia midfielder Luka Modric paid Spanish fiscal authorities close to 1m euro to settle his own image rights tax case. (BBC)

Viviani edges out GroenewegenDubai

Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) collected the best

birthday present he could wish for with victory on stage 2 of the Dubai Tour. The Italian, who turned 29 yesterday, edged out stage 1 winner Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Riccardo Minali (Astana) to take the spoils.

The stage was decided by another messy and chaotic sprint with none of the major leadout teams able to deliver their sprinter perfectly to the line. On stage 1 it was Groenewegen who picked his way through the crowd and 24 hours later it was Viviani who repeated the trick.

Viviani timed his acceleration perfectly, seeing off the challenge from Mark Cavendish (Dimenion Data) who took fourth, and then holding off a late charge from the faster-finishing Groenewegen.

Groenewegen remains the overall leader, with Viviani just two seconds in arrears.

BMC Racing’s Nathan Van Hooydonck once again made it into the break and collected enough bonus seconds to finish the stage third overall, nine seconds down on the overall

leader.“Having my birthday today

added to my motivation. Losing yesterday was also good for my head,” explained Viviani.

“Overnight we felt like we

missed one chance that would never be given back. I feel I’m in good condition and have the legs for winning. I had a mechanical but luckily it was with 20km to go and I had time to come back.”

For the second day in a row, Marcel Kittel (Katusha-Alpecin) failed to deliver his lines when the spotlight shone in his direction.

The German rider had his

team on the front for most of the stage, but they withdrew from the action in the closing stages only to rally with a desperate challenge inside the final two kilometres. (Cyclingnews)

P23 Viviani edges out Groenewegen

Swansea rout Notts

Wales

Swansea recorded their biggest-ever FA Cup win as Notts County were demolished 8-1 at the Liberty Stadium.

First-half braces from Tammy Abraham and Nathan Dyer, as well as second-half efforts from Kyle Naughton, Wayne Routledge, Tom Carroll and debutant Daniel James, saw Swansea cruise into a last-16 tie away to manager Carlos Carvalhal’s former club Sheffield Wednesday.

Noor Husin gave County brief hope, making it 3-1 after 35 minutes, but the League Two promotion contenders were blown away on a freezing night in south Wales.

It also gave County an unwanted spot in Swansea history, the margin of defeat bigger than the 7-2 and 6-1 FA Cup scorelines inflicted on Folkestone and Rhyl.

Carvalhal had called for Abraham to show a marked improvement after going 14 games without scoring, and the England striker duly responded with his first goals for nearly four months.

Swansea showed their intent in the opening exchanges when Adam Collin saved from Abraham and Dyer, but the County goalkeeper was beaten after 18 minutes.

Naughton and Luciano Narsingh combined down the right and Abraham was picked out to sweep home his first goal since October 14.

Abraham turned provider just 83 seconds later with a delightful pass which Dyer sidefooted home for his first Swansea goal since August 2015.

Dyer’s next, however, took only 10 more minutes to arrive with the lively Narsingh again making a telling contribution.

Mike van der Hoorn should have extended the lead from Carroll’s corner, rising above former Swan Richard Duffy but heading over from six yards.

And County were given hope when Husin fired home from the edge of the box after Swansea had failed to clear their area.

The goal was allowed to stand after Martin Atkinson had checked with the Video Assistant Referee to see whether a couple of County players, standing in offside positions, were obscuring the view of Swansea goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt.

Jorge Grant almost reduced the deficit further, but Nordfeldt pushed away his half-volley and Swansea restored their three-goal advantage in the second minute of stoppage time.

Kyle Bartley’s raking pass sent Narsingh scampering down the right again and he fed Abraham, who converted with another firm finish.

Jon Stead tested Nordfeldt after robbing Van der Hoorn, but the County defence continued to creak with Abraham close to a hat-trick and Collin blocking Narsingh’s near-post effort.

Collin was not so competent dealing with Carroll’s 53rd-minute corner and the loose ball to Naughton, who lashed home only his second

Swansea goal. (PA Sport)
