Undergraduate Medical Admission Test (UMAT)

About the UMAT Exam

The Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT) is developed each year by ACER on behalf of the UMAT Consortium.

The test is developed and used specifically to assist with the selection of students into medicine and health science degree programs at undergraduate level at the universities listed on this page. UMAT is designed to assess general attributes and abilities gained through prior experience and learning; specifically, the acquisition of skills in critical thinking and problem solving, understanding people and abstract non-verbal reasoning. These abilities are considered important to the study and later practice of professions in the health sciences.

UMAT is an aptitude test. It is not curriculum-based and presupposes no particular subjects of study at secondary level. It does not require any knowledge or skills in mathematics or sciences, or in any other area of the curriculum. It is designed to complement your academic results, not to replicate them. It is not a personality or IQ test.

UMAT is offered in late July and is offered once a year only.

Structure & Content

The UMAT test consists of 3 hours testing time, plus 10 minutes reading time. All questions are presented in one test book and there are no rest breaks. The UMAT consists of three multiple choice sections over a total of three hours:

• Section 1: Logical reasoning and problem solving (48 questions)

• Section 2: Understanding people (44 questions)

• Section 3: Non-verbal reasoning (42 questions)

UMAT questions do not test academic knowledge and do not require special understanding of any academic discipline.

All questions are in multiple choice format with 4 or 5 response alternatives, from which applicants are asked to choose the most appropriate. Each question has only one correct response.

Some questions are in written form and may present information in visual or tabular format while other questions are based entirely on visual material.

Logical Reasoning and Problem Solving Materials are drawn from a wide variety of general sources and are based on a brief text or piece of information presented graphically. Questions assess your ability to comprehend, draw logical conclusions, reach solutions by identifying relevant facts, evaluate information, pinpoint additional or missing information, and generate and test plausible hypotheses.

Understanding People This construct assesses the ability to understand and think about people. Questions are based on a scenario, dialogue or other text representing specific interpersonal situations. Most passages will have several questions. Questions assess your ability to identify, understand, and, where necessary, infer the thoughts, feelings, behaviour and/or intentions of the people represented in the situations.

Non-verbal Reasoning Questions may be of several kinds. All are based on patterns or sequences of shapes and are designed to assess your ability to reason in the abstract and solve problems in non-verbal contexts.

CR303: Medicine Interview Combined CourseIn addition, students enroled in the Year 12 & UMAT High Achiever Program are automatically enroled in the Medicine Interview Combined Course (CR303). This course provides students with the most thorough preparation possible via combination of the Medicine Interview Live Course (CR301) and the Medicine Interview Online Course (CR302).

The attendance component of this course is conducted in a live setting with an interview panel. The live interviews conducted during the course are designed to be completely representative of the real interview. Formats including Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) and Semi-structured Interview are explained and station considerations are given for student university preferences in determining group allocation so that students may practice the style of questioning encountered at specific universities.

In addition to the ‘experience’ gained from the live interviews, all candidates will be given personalised advice and strategies for improvement. In total, students are involved in a total of 4 interviews (5x MMI Stations each – total 20 stations). Total time allocated for personalised feedback is 50 minutes per student.

The online component of this course requires students to work through the METC Medicine Interview Scenario Modules (1-8). These modules detail over 100 scenarios previously used at Australian Medical school admissions interviews. Detailed ideal responses are provided for each scenario, which each include a number of questions and prompts.

These modules cover the following key attributes of the Medical school admissions criteria:

In total, students are involved in a total of 4 interviews (5x MMI Stations each = total 20 stations). Total time allocated for personalised feedback is 50 minutes per student.

Course MaterialsThe course materials also include online access to the METC Medicine Interview Preparation Module. This contains:

• Practice exercises for students to complete between the course and their admissions interview

• Further suggested readings focusing on high-yield admissions interview topics
