Professor Pawel Sowa holds a Doctorate Degree, as well as Doctor of Science in Technical Science from Silesian University of Technology, Poland. He is currently Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Director of the Institute of Power Systems and Control, Silesian University of Technology. Throughout his academic career he has published more than 200 scientific publications in many international referred journals and conferences proceedings. Prof. Sowa has served as a project leader/principal investigator to 13 projects with another 48 as active co-researchers. He has been actively involves in many consultancies and invited to talk in various seminars, dialogues and conferences (26 invited lectures at universities and foreign enterprises, 12 internships at foreign universities from 1 to 8 months, 7 signed letters of intent, 8 bilateral agreements and grants management, review, collaboration with international industry. Specialist in power engineering, power system modelling, and transient electromagnetic phenomena. He has also won several awards in international and national research competitions.
Title: Biological Effects of Low- and High Frequency Electromagnetic Fields
There is no doubt that short-term exposure to very high levels of electromagnetic fields can be harmful to health. The electromagnetic fields above certain levels can trigger biological effects, which are responses to a stimulus or to a change in the environment. Changes that are irreversible and stress the system for long periods of time may constitute a health hazard. The focus of international research is the investigation of possible links between cancer and electromagnetic fields, at power line and radiofrequencies. Research works are carried on intensively for over twenty years in different centers to concern of determining development potentialities of cancers so, as child's leukemia, brain tumors and lymphatic illness under the influence and the electromagnetic field as well as the illness of nervous system. Special research is needed to identify and measure health hazards. At low frequencies, external electric and magnetic fields
IPN – IWNEST 2014 CONFERENCES, BANDUNG
induce small circulating currents within the body. The main effect of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields is heating of body tissues. In the European Union, in spite of long-term discussions, so far a directive which would concern the protection of the population against the effect of electromagnetic fields wasn't implemented. Since it seems unlikely that electromagnetic fields could initiate cancer, a large number of investigations have been conducted to determine if electromagnetic fields exposure can influence cancer promotion or co-promotion. Half of cell phone's radiation is absorbed by the human body and another quarter by the brain. The strongest link yet shows a high cancer death rate among soldiers exposed to microwave radiation, the same as that emitted by the phones.

Title : Asean: prospects and challenges in the new millennium
In August 1967, when the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) was founded, Southeast Asia was at the center of world events. There was conflict from 1963-1966 between Indonesia and Malaysia because Indonesia was trying to prevent the creation of Malaysia out of former British colonies. There was fear of several communist movements in Southeast Asia as well as the fear that the United States would abandon its commitment in Southeast Asia. One result of this anxiety was the formation of the ASEAN. The original five members were Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
The stated goals of ASEAN include accelerating economic growth, social progress, protection of regional peace and stability, opportunities for member countries to discuss differences peacefully, and sociocultural evolution among its members. Economically, the original ASEAN countries were focused on building an export-oriented manufacturing sector based on low wages and outside capital. This strategy was mainly successful in the 1980s and the early 1990s. They created the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA) in 1992. Then, the Asian financial crisis of 1997 occurred. After the recovery from the 1997 crisis, the group as a whole has been doing very well economically with additional partnerships and trade agreements with other non-member countries. The original five members added five more members (Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam), making the bloc ten full members.
If the ASEAN were a single country, it would have a combined 2013 GDP of USD 2.4 trillion, making it the sixth largest country in the world. One can measure tremendous progress that the ASEAN has made over the years: cooperation among members, GDP growth, FDI inflows, reduction in poverty, as well as an overall increase in the standard of living. However the ASEAN bloc does face several challenges as it moves forward with an ambitious agenda. The intent of the paper is to first highlight ASEAN achievements and then
IPN – IWNEST 2014 CONFERENCES, BANDUNG
to analyze its future prospects and challenges. The paper will also briefly discuss its “new” relationships with other nations, especially China and India, the two economic giants in Asia.
