Leaving his childhood behind in Owen Sound, Ontario, Sgt Douglas attended basic training in
Oct of 1996 at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu,
Quebec. He was so nervous on that on his way to recruit school he threw up in his sister-in-
laws car. Upon arriving in St Jean a burly Engineer Sgt started yelling at him for no apparent
reason. Things only got worse when he addressed the Sgt as "Sir" and was promptly told that
the Sgt was not a Sir and that he actually worked for a living.
After enduring many weeks of torture, Pte Douglas managed to complete his basic training and
was immediately rewarded with a trip to sunny Shilo, Manitoba, for trades training to become an
artillery gunner. After many more weeks of torture, the newly minted Gnr Douglas graduated
from the Royal Canadian Artillery Battle School and was promptly posted to 1st Regiment Royal
Canadian Horse Artillery in Shilo as a proud member of A Battery. After only 1 year in the
Regiment, he attempted to make a name for himself by participating in the Mountain Man
competition. After just over 8 hours on the grueling course he completed one of his biggest life
achievements, next to his marriage to Sandy, and births of their two children, Jordan and Sarah.
Gunner Douglas was promoted to Bdr in February of 2000 and then deployed to Bosnia on Apr of
that same year for a 6 month tour of duty.
In early 2001, Bdr Douglas saw the light, or maybe just a better understanding that putting "I can
blow stuff up" on a resume would probably not cut it in the civilian world, he decided to become
an LCIS technician. In Aug of 2004, he deployed to Haiti as a technical member of a Satcom
detachment. On Jun of 2006, MCpl (Acting/Lacking) Douglas deployed to the U.A.E in support
of the Afghanistan mission. He received his substantive promotion on Nov 2007.
In the summer of 2009, after many years of hard work at Canadian Forces Joint Signals Regiment,
MCpl Douglas was rewarded with a posting to the Canadian Forces School of Communications &
Electronics as an instructor (corrupter?) of young minds on the LCIS 3's course. In the summer of
2011, he was promoted to Sgt and posted to Borden as a Project Manager. After just over 2 short
years of living in Angus, Sgt Douglas was posted back to Kingston as a member the Canadian Army
Simulation Centre to the Command Support Initiative Team as a trainer and technical advisor, his
last post prior to retirement.
Sgt Douglas will start his retirement leave on 08 Oct with his final day in the military being 27
Oct. He and Sandy will be moving out to the country in the Kingston area to eat a lot of
peaches, to quote a country song. His Departure with Dignity will be held at Jack Astors in
Kingston, Ontario, 14 October at 1300hrs. Anecdotes from Sgt Douglas career may be

Laissant son enfance Owen Sound en Ontario derrire lui, le sergent Douglas a fait sa formation
de base en octobre 1996 la lcole de leadership et des recrues des Forces canadiennes Saint-
Jean-sur-Richelieu, Qubec. Il tait tellement nerveux sur le chemin de l'cole des recrues, quil a
vomi dans la voiture de sa belle-sur. En arrivant St Jean, un gros sgt ingnieur a commenc
lui crier aprs sans raison apparente. Les choses se sont aggraves quand il sest adress au
sergent en disant "Monsieur" et a t rapidement corrig quand le sergent lui dit quil ntait pas
un "Monsieur" et qu'il travaillait pour gagner sa vie.
Aprs avoir endur plusieurs semaines de torture, le sdt Douglas a russi terminer sa formation
de base et a t immdiatement rcompenss par un voyage la ville ensoleille de Shilo, au
Manitoba, pour suivre la formation pour devenir un artilleur. Aprs de nombreuses semaines
supplmentaires de torture, lartilleur Douglas, nouvellement form, graduat de l'cole de combat
de lArtillerie royale canadienne et a t rapidement mut au 1er Rgiment du Royal Canadian
Horse Artillery, Shilo en tant que fier membre de la batterie A. Aprs seulement un an au
rgiment, il a tent de se faire un nom en participant la comptition "Mountain Man". Aprs un
peu plus de 8 heures sur le parcours extnuant, il a accompli l'une des plus grandes ralisations de
sa vie, aprs bien entendu, son mariage avec Sandy et les naissances de leurs deux enfants,

Au dbut de 2001, le Bdr Douglas a vu la lumire, ou peut-tre juste une meilleure
comprhension que "Je peux faire sauter des trucs" sur un CV ne pserait pas fort dans le monde
civil, il a dcid de devenir un technicien SICT. En aot 2004, il a t dploy en Hati en tant
que membre technique d'un dtachement Satcom. En juin 2006, le cplc (par intrim) Douglas
sest dploy aux E.A.U. en appui la mission en Afghanistan. Sa promotion fut confirme en
novembre 2007.
l't 2009, aprs de nombreuses annes de travail ardues au Rgiment des transmissions
interarmes des Forces canadiennes, le Cplc Douglas a t rcompens par une affectation
l'cole des Forces canadiennes de communications et lectronique comme instructeur (ou
corrupteur?) des jeunes esprits sur le cours de l'SICT 3. l't 2011, il fut promu au grade de
sergent et mut Borden en tant que gestionnaire de projet. Aprs un peu plus de 2 courtes
annes vivre Angus, le sergent Douglas a t affect de nouveau Kingston en tant que
membre du Centre de simulation de l'Arme canadienne en tant que membre de lquipe de
soutien au commandement en tant que formateur et conseiller technique, son dernier poste avant
la retraite.
Le sgt Douglas commencera son cong de fin de service le 8 octobre prochain et son dernier jour
de travail aux seins des Forces canadiennes sera le 27 octobre. Lui et Sandy dmnagerons la
campagne dans la rgion de Kingston pour manger beaucoup de pches, pour citer une chanson
country (qui ne fait aucun sens en franais !). Son dpart dans la dignit aura lieu au Jack Astor

Lieutenant-Colonel Shane Pasiechnyk Retirement Msg
Lieutenant-Colonel (LCol) Shane Pasiechnyk will be retiring from the Canadian armed forces (CAF) on 20 October 2016 after 26 years of loyal and dedicated service to Canada, the CAF and the communication and electronics branch.
LCol Pasiechnyk is originally from Kimberley, British Columbia, and enrolled in 1990 under the Regular Officer Training Plan. After completing basic officer training in Chilliwack, BC, he attended the Royal Military College (RMC) of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, from 1990 to 1994, earning a bachelor of engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering. He attended on the job training at 18 Wing Telecommunication Information Systems Unit Edmonton, and 74 Communications Group Vancouver, and completed his phase training as a Communication and Electronics Engineering (CELE) air officer in 1995.
Posted to the Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics (CFSCE) in 1995, he served as Troop Commander for Technician Training and Practical Orientated Electronics Training (POET), and held the position of Second-in-Command of G Squadron (Technician Training). In 1999, he was posted to the Base Telecommunication and Information Systems Unit (BTISU) Kingston as the Network Manager followed by a posting in 2000 to the Canadian Forces Joint Signal Regiment (CFJSR) where he served as Information Management Officer, One Squadron 2IC and Regimental Operations Captain.
From June, 2003 to February 2006, Capt Pasiechnyk became the Commanding Officer (CO) for the Canadian Forces Crypto Maintenance Unit (CFCMU), his most rewarding posting. Following his command, he was promoted to the rank of Major and posted to Directorate Information Management Technologies, Products and Services (DIMTPS) in Ottawa, first as the Section Head for Classified Installations & Crypto LCMM and then as the Operations Officer. In 2009 he was awarded with his second tour as a CO of 764 Communications Squadron responsible for the CF strategic communication infrastructure and military messaging. In May 2011, he deployed to Naples Italy as the Senior Communications Staff Officer (J6) for Operation MOBILE, the Canadian element of the NATO Mission UNIFIED PROTECTOR. In November 2011, LCol Pasiechnyk was promoted to his current rank and posted to Radio and Communication Systems in Materiel Group as the Project Manager for four major capital projects in support of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), and Life Cycle Materiel Manager (LCMM) for the RCAF Command and Control (C2) system. In July 2014, he was posted to IM Group as the Deputy Director for the Directorate Information Management Engineering and Integration (DIMEI).
In 2016, LCol Pasiechnyk would receive his final and present posting with the Vice Chief Of Defense Staff, Director General Defence Security (DGDS). Although extremely disappointed to be ending his sports scholarship with the Canadian Forces, Shane will continue to refine is finely tuned skills in hockey, not so much in golf, as a civilian. Shane is married to Carmen Roy and they have two wonderful children Scott and Michelle.
LCol Pasiechnyk will remain in the NCR upon his retirement and will continue to support the Department of National Defense as a civilian with ADM(MAT) as air C2 System Support Engineer.
A depart with dignity luncheon will be held at the RCAF mess, 158 Gloucester St, Ottawa, Ontario on Thursday, 20 October at 1200 for 1230 hrs. Cost of attending the DWD luncheon is $25. Le lieutenant-colonel (Lcol) Shane Pasiechnyk prendra sa retraite des Forces armes canadiennes (FAC) le 20 octobre 2016 aprs 26 ans de bons et loyaux services envers le Canada, les FAC, et la Branche des communications et de llectronique.
Le Lcol Pasiechnyk est originaire de Kimberley, en Colombie-Britannique. Il senrle en 1990 dans le cadre du Programme de formation des officiers de la Force rgulire (PFOR). Il reoit ensuite une formation en cours demploi lUnit des systmes dinformation et des tlcommunications de la 18e Escadre Edmonton, et au 74e Groupe des communications Vancouver, puis il termine son instruction progressive titre dofficier du gnie lectronique et des communications (Air) (GE Comm) en 1995.
Il est alors affect lcole dlectronique et des communications des Forces canadiennes (EECFC), o il exerce dabord les fonctions de commandant de troupe responsable de la formation des techniciens et du cours dlectronique orient vers la pratique (CEOP), puis de commandant-adjoint de lEscadron G (Instruction des techniciens). En 1999, il est affect lUnit des systmes dinformation et des tlcommunications de la base Kingston titre de gestionnaire des rseaux, suivi, en 2000, dune affectation au Rgiment des transmissions interarmes des Forces canadiennes (RTIFC) o il occupe les postes dofficier de la gestion de linformation, de commandant adjoint du 1er Escadron et de capitaine rgimentaire des oprations.
De juin 2003 fvrier 2006, il est commandant de lUnit de maintenance du matriel cryptographique des Forces canadiennes (UMMCFC), son poste le plus valorisant de sa carrire. la fin de ce commandement, il est promu au grade de major et affect la Direction Technologies, produits et services (Gestion de linformation) (DTPSGI) Ottawa, dabord
comme chef de section des gestionnaires du cycle de vie du matriel (GCVM) des installations classifies et du matriel de cryptographique, puis comme officier des oprations. En 2009, on lui offre un deuxime commandement, le 764e Escadron des communications, responsable de linfrastructure des communications stratgiques des FAC et de la messagerie militaire. En mai 2011, il est envoy Naples, en Italie, comme officier suprieur dtat-major des communications (J6) pour lopration MOBILE, llment canadien de la mission de lOTAN UNIFIED PROTECTOR. En novembre 2011, le Lcol Pasiechnyk est promu son grade actuel et affect lorganisation des Systmes de radio et de communication dans le Groupe des matriels titre de gestionnaire de projet pour quatre grands projets dimmobilisation en appui lAviation royale canadienne (ARC), et de gestionnaire du cycle de vie du matriel (GCVM) pour le systme de commandement et de contrle (C2) de lARC. En juillet 2014, il passe au Groupe de la Gestion de linformation (GI) comme directeur-adjoint dans lorganisation du Directeur Ingnierie et intgration (Gestion de linformation) (DIIGI).
En 2016, le Lcol Pasiechnyk reoit son actuelle et dernire affectation avec le Vice-chef dtat-major de la dfense, Directeur gnral Scurit de la Dfense (DGSD). Mme sil est extrmement du de mettre fin sa bourse dathlte dans les Forces armes canadiennes, Shane continuera de perfectionner ses excellentes habilets au hockey, et dans une moindre mesure, celles au golf, en tant que civil. Il est mari Carmen Roy avec qui il a eu deux merveilleux enfants, Scott et Michelle.
Le Lcol Pasiechnyk demeurera dans la RCN aprs sa retraite et continuera dappuyer le ministre de la Dfense nationale comme employ civil avec le SMA(Mat) dans le rle dingnieur de soutien des systmes de contrle et de commandement arien.
