Purpose In the Vine Ministries

Exegetical Paraphrase & Study Guide

John 1:1-17

Theme

In the first chapter of John, verses one through seventeen are a particularly good area of study for recently received believers. The persons of God, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, from the beginning are displayed in all majesty with introduction to the person of Jesus highlighted in these scriptures.

I. IntroductionA. The purpose of this study is to try to derive a more excellent understanding about

the Lord Jesus’ identity and his part in his earthly appearing, as recorded by the disciple John.

B. This passage is about who God is, revealing the working together of the Spirit of God with the Word of God, and God, the supreme divinity. In this text the Word is made flesh.

C. John, the disciple, also gives a description of God’s servant John the Baptist, who was sent before him to proclaim the coming of the Son of God, the Messiah.

D. Several accounts of who Jesus is, are found in various lengths of detail in the gospels.

E. Matthew 1 tells of the lineage of Jesus as was given through his step father, Joseph. A short synopsis is given of things surrounding his birth.

F. Mark begins with the coming of Jesus. Very little more than the history of his baptism by John the Baptist is said about Jesus appearing into the realm of man.

G. The pen of Luke describes the story of the angel Gabriel who brought the message to Mary of God’s plan for her to birth his son, Jesus. In Luke 1:32, the angel also ascribes the lineage of David and his throne to Jesus. One can read of the conception of Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit, who came upon Mary and overshadowed her. (Luke 1:35)

3

H. John tells of the origin of the son of God, from his earliest known beginning as the Word in creation and ultimately as Jesus in flesh. Things are revealed that are helpful to one’s knowledge of how to view this Word of God. In this passage of scripture text, the Word became flesh and was named Jesus by his father God.

I. Paul the Apostle writes shorter texts of the lineage of Jesus, but also speaks of Jesus being the seed of David and the Son of God. (Romans 1:1-6)

J. The definitions from the koine Greek text in John 1:1-17, helps one to understand more precisely what God said in the language which the writer heard or told it through this passage.

II. In the Beginning (John 1: 1)A. Nothing in existence except God, was the exact state of affairs.

1. The book of Genesis was written before the book of John. According to Genesis chapter one, in the beginning, there was no heaven nor earth.

2. The first verse of the book of Genesis tells us that God created the heavens and the earth.

B. Chaos to Order by the Word of God (John 1:1)1. At the beginning, God spoke.

a. God Spoke the living Word

b. In the Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance, a more specific definition was given uniquely for the book of John. According to the Greek dictionary in the Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance the Word accompanied with the article “ho” is defined as “Divine Expression.” The whole idea of the supreme deity is given with his spoken Word. The Word of God encompasses his whole identity.

c. The “Divine Expression” of the supreme God, seems to more clearly define the definition of Word in this place, if we are familiar with the terms divine and expression.

1. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines “divine” as: “relating to or proceeding directly from God.”

2. The word “expression” is defined as:

4

a. “an act, process, or instance of representing in a medium (such as words)”

b. “something that manifests, embodies, or symbolizes”

c. Expression includes tone of voice, gesticulations, tenor of the mind involved in the thoughts and judgments of various sorts toward the subject that the expression addresses.

d. The action that the word makes is also a part of the expression. One knows how various people act. When one thinks of these certain people, each has an image, or expression that recalls that person to one’s mind.

e. God’s expression was total and complete. f. The entire expression of his thought about the creation

of and to the universe, the planet, the creatures, plants and animals to be on this planet was included in his expression towards it, in creation, as well in his spoken Word.

C. The Divine Expression, seems to more clearly define the phrase “The Word”, used in other translations of this context. However, for simplification the term “The Word” will be used hereafter, in this course of study.

III. The Word is the expression of God. (John 1:1)

A. The Word is capitalized here because this is a name of God.

B. The Word was in the beginning.

C. The Word was with God. 1. The writer tells that the Word was with God saying. in part, that he was a

separate part of God, or personage, although of exact nature and character towards men as the first person of God.

2. The Word’s entire will and emotions were those of God. It is not easy to express something so identical as God and his Word. Both are drastically different from each other, yet are not completely separate.

3. Human beings are created in the image of God, having a spirit, soul, and a body. In effect, there are three different personages within man’s framework just as God.

5

4. In the second verse of John 1, John says the second time that this same Word was with God in the very beginning.

5. This expression of God was who God was while sending forth his thought and intents to cause an action.

a. This Word was with God. He was exactly the thoughts and desires of God. b. The Word was God’s vision and the image of his desires, as he spoke things to

come into existence. (Colossians 1:15)

D. The Word was God.a. This Word is exactly the intentions God had for the world. b. The Word is his exact power to do and volition to make it happen. c. The Word is a personage of God. The writer tells us that this separate person of

God was also God. Not two Gods but a God of extraordinary supremacy with three separate persons here in this passage.

d. Colossians 1:15 says that the Word is the image of God.

IV. The Word was in the Beginning (John 1:2)

A. Nowhere in the Bible is there an image of creation for God, the Word, or the Holy Spirit.

B. There are no statements that give more of the explanation of God, the Word, or the Holy Spirit, than what as stated in the beginning. In the beginning was before the heavens and the earth were formed.

C. In Genesis 1:1, the Bible says,” In the beginning, God created”. Here the word, “God”, in the Old Testament, is “Elohim”. According to the Hebrew Dictionary in Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance “Elohim” is a plural form of God, suggesting his different persons.

D. John reiterates it the second time in verse 2 “in the beginning” adding the words “The same”. According to the Greek Dictionary in Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance, the term, “the same” has a masculine article which denotes masculine gender. The article gives the Word masculine gender. He was in the beginning.

V. The action of creation (John 1:3)A. John lends a bit more description of the creation by telling us that all things were

made by the Word of God. Hebrews 2:10 and Colossians 1:15-16, again tell us that everything was made for him, and by this same Jesus were all things made. Colossians tells us that he is the image of God and the firstborn of every creature.

6

B. Our mind generates all the actions that this body will do. How closely we can associate God to the way he made us, may be determined more by our faith that God is exactly as he said. He consists of more than one person together as one. God the father expressed his desire by speaking the word. This divine Word was God. It was then, according to John, that this Word created God’s whole desires.

C. Genesis 1 shows us that the determinate will of God spoke all things into existence. John tells us that his Word created all the purpose and desire of God. It says that without this Word of God, was nothing made. (John 1:3)

D. If one decides to move an object from one place to another, nothing happens until one forms in his mind the energy to move one’s body to the object, pick it up, and move it by the unseen will to where the mind wants. Perhaps the understanding of the magnitude of God and his expression in the Word can be more easily understood in this manner.

VI. Life (John 1:4)A. The word used for life in this verse is the Greek word “zoe”. John says in John 1: 4, that

the Word had life in him. Looking at the definitions from the Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance, the definition for life in this verse is simply “life”. However, the Vines Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words divides life into two separate categories.

1. The two categories In the Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words for the word “life” are the absolute life of God and the temporal life of the blood. The vitality of every living thing in existence whether insects, birds, fish, animals, or man have this Spirit of Life. This is not eternal but natural life. (Acts 17:25)

2. The Word had the life of God in him. The life of God is eternal and absolute. (John 3:14-17)

3. God’s son had life in him. John 5:26 says that “as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself.”

D. The Spirit of Life (breath) enlivened all of the creation as God desired. Working together

with the Word was a part of God called the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was the third person of the triune God. Again, John did not write in this verse the name, Holy Spirit. Life was in Jesus. This refers to the Spirit of life, who is the Holy Spirit. (Romans 8:2, Revelation11:11)

7

E. The third person of the trinity is also spoken of in the beginning. In Genesis 1:2, the Bible states: “And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” In John 1:4, John did not write solely about the Word, when speaking of the creation. His purpose was to define who Jesus was before he appeared, although yet unnamed in verse 4. The Spirit united with the Word brings life. (Romans 8:10-11)

F. In Genesis 2:7, this Word breathed life into man. The Spirit of Life within him was that same living breath that gives man life.

1. Romans 8:10 deals with the Spirit of Christ. Men can receive life from Jesus. There is a Spirit of life within men. This Spirit of life is a gift of God unto men, the Spirit of God living within men. Through acceptance of his blood sacrifice for us, his death, and resurrection, one can receive that which a man needs to be washed from sin in this living body. He also receives eternal life. (John 3:15-16)

2. The change within is of the Spirit, not of the carnal mind or flesh. (Titus 3:5-6)

3. The change within us is not instant, although the ability to change is instant. (Romans 12:2-3)

4. This change of Spirit causes one to change his way of thinking.5. Men still wrestle with the original carnal mind after their salvation, but

they can follow the Spirit through knowledge of the Word and hearing God speak. Faith comes by hearing God speak. (Romans 10:17)

6. Although man is of flesh, faith is of the Spirit and overcomes the flesh. Just hearing the Word can bring faith to men. (Romans 10:17)

G. The fact that the Word has life in him is also the reason he is God who baptizes us in the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 3:11, Mark 1:8, Luke 3:16)

H. The Word of God always works with God’s Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is referred to as the Spirit of Life (Romans 8:2,) or as the Spirit of Life from God. (Revelations 11:11)

VII. Light of men (John 1:4)

A. The Greek dictionary in Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance defines light as, “to shine or to make manifest”.

B. John tells us that the Word had life in him, but it also says that the life was the light of men.

1. In Genesis 2:7, the Bible says that God breathed into man, and he became a living soul. This life was natural life.

8

2. The light of the Word is the illumination man needed to overcome the his separation from God and life after he sinned. The Word revealed the way for man to return to God.

3. Man was created without sin, but because of disobedience, man fell from the grace of God. With the knowledge of the tree of good and evil, man was also put out of the garden of Eden and separated from God. (Genesis 3:22-24)

4. The light of the Word leads men to become sons of God. This privilege is by his grace that reigns through righteousness unto eternal life through Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:20-21)

VIII. Power over darkness (John 1:5)

A. John 1:4 says that the Word had life, which also was the light. God created light in a universe that knew no light.

B. Light illuminates the darkness.

C. There is natural light that illuminates dark areas, such as the sunlight over the land.

D. There is spiritual light that illuminates the way for man to find God. In Luke, he is referred to as the dayspring, the rising of light. (Luke 1:78-79)

E. Light naturally and spiritually pierces darkness. Darkness cannot pierce light. Wherever light shines, there is no power of darkness to overtake it. Man can see stars from a great distance and the dark does not stop the light. Darkness does not go forth into the light to pierce it or overpower it. The light actually pierces the darkness and drives it back.

F. Things can block the light. These things are not darkness, but can cause darkness. Truth is spiritual as well as physical. God is light, and in him, is no darkness at all. (1 John 1:5)

1. The son of God came to destroy the works of the devil. (1 John 3:8) The Word is the light who destroys spiritual darkness.

2. Man can choose to sit in darkness, but there is a light. (Matthew 4:16) 3. He who is born of God has life, the same who is also the light. To be born again is

to receive the illumination of Jesus, who shows to us who God really is. (John 8:12)

9

IX. God sent a witness (John 1:6)

A. John the disciple recorded the words of John the Baptist. 1. It is easy to lose coherence of who is speaking in the book of John at times. John the

disciple, uses the name, John, for the prophet John the Baptist.2. In the book of John, John the Baptist is the subject of part of the first chapter and

other chapters in the book of John. He speaks of the prophet John as the man sent. Sometimes the name John the Baptist is written out. In the first chapter of the book of John, John the disciple uses just the name John referring to John the Baptist.

B. The text is written in third person format. 1. Often, if reference is made of the writer and disciple John, he calls himself “that

other disciple”. (John 18:16, 20:2,20:4,20:8)2. There are other references to himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved (John

13:23,20:2,21:7, 21:20).3. Never in the first chapter is John the disciple named. The first chapter uses the

name John always as John the Baptist. 4. Most reference to the disciple John, was later in his book to show that he was

there when certain things took place. a. There is reference in this book of his being at the judgment of the Jews.b. John was at the crucifixion and saw the soldier pierce the side of Jesus.c. He uses his name, John, when Jesus gave him charge of his mother. d. John was the first of two disciples who raced back to the tomb on

resurrection morning. He was the first to arrive. e. John was the disciple who recognized the Lord by the sea with bread and fish

on the fire.

5. These are not all of the excerpts that John the disciple uses to point to himself in the book of John. When one reads the name John within the book of John, he should always consider who is doing the speaking

X. John the Baptist (John 1:7)

A. It is known that John the Baptist was sent by God. Matthew 3:3 says that he was the one about whom Esaias spoke. (Isaiah 40:3)

B. John was filled with the Holy Spirit before he was born. Zacharias, John’s father, was told by the angel, Gabriel, John would be filled with the Holy Spirit in his mother’s

10

womb. (Luke 1:15) His mother Elisabeth also received the infilling of the Holy Spirit, (Luke 1:41) as well as his father. (Luke 1:67)

C. Zacharias also prophesied that John would be the prophet who would go before the Lord to prepare his way. (Luke 1:76)

D. John the Baptist’s mother was Elizabeth. Her cousin was Mary, the mother of Jesus.

1. John’s birth had been miraculous because his mother was aged when she conceived him. (Luke 1:7)

2. His father had been struck dumb by an angel until he believed as the angel Gabriel had said, his name is John. (Luke 1: 63-64)

E. When Mary, the mother of Jesus, was with child she came to John’s mother, Elisabeth. John, as an unborn child, leapt within his mother’s womb in the presence of the unborn child of God in Mary’s womb. (Luke 1:41)

F. His mother and father surely took the time to tell John of the miracles that surrounded his birth and Jesus’ birth as well. It is not stated in the scripture that the two knew each other in a family setting. John had to recognize through the Holy Spirit, who Jesus was even if they had known each other as children.

G. John the Baptist’s ministry was one of preparing the way for the Messiah.

1. He was not certain who the Messiah could be until he saw the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus. Even after this event, there was still a small bit of uncertainty because of circumstance.

2. He had to know from the Truth, the truth of who the Messiah was. While John the Baptist was in prison he sent his disciples to ask Jesus directly if he was the one, the Messiah. Jesus confirmed to John’s disciples that he was indeed the one and told his followers that John was the greatest prophet of all the prophets. (Luke 7:28)

XI. A witness of the Light, not the Light (John 1:8)A. John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus by preaching repentance to the hearts

of the people. (Matthew 3:2) 1. This proclamation of John the Baptist was the baptism of repentance for the

remission of sins, in preparation for the coming of the Lord. (Luke 1:77-79)

11

2. To prepare ground for a seed, it must be turned and loosened. When ground is prepared for the seed, it is considered fallow ground. (Hosea 10:12) Ploughed ground must be broken up and debris removed before seed can be sewn.a. Spiritual ground is the ground of a man’s heart.b. The heart is the spirit and soul of man.c. The light of the Word illuminates the mind of the soul so it can hear and

understand. This illumination breaks the groundd. True repentance of a heart removes the refuse of sin and transforms it to be

softened into fallow ground. e. After the process of breaking the ground and removing the refuse, the seed

of salvation can be sown successively.

B. John the Baptist was also a witness who gave out what he saw. John the Baptist told his message to the people who did not know the light spoken of in John 1:5.

C. John the Baptist knew of the coming of the Messiah from the Holy Spirit within him. He baptized people unto repentance and prophesied of the coming of one greater, who would baptize the people in the Holy Spirit and fire. (Matthew 3:11, Luke 3:15-16)

D. If one has no experience with God, he cannot be a witness. If one is not born-again, but says that he is, he has no light to offer other men. (1 John 1:2-3) In order to be the witness Jesus sent men to be, one must have this experience of enlightenment.

E. John said that John the Baptist did not ascribe to be any power more than a witness. John the Baptist professed that he was not the Messiah. (John 1:8)

F. John the Baptist preached that he was not that light, but prepared the way for the light.

XII. True Light (John1: 9)A. According to the Strong’s Exhaustive Dictionary, the word true is “truthful”.

B. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, the word true has three different meanings.1. True is being in accordance with the actual state of affairs

or true description.2. True is to be conformable to an essential reality. 3. True is to be fully realized or fulfilled.

a True is properly called true. b True is the ideal or essential.

12

c True is being that which is the case rather than what is manifested or assumed.

C. Light is to shine or make manifest because of luminescence.

D. The words true and light have definitions combined together to form the expression “true light”, using the appropriate definitions of each word.1. A thing is true if it is unchangeable. Absolute, no matter what is manifest or

assumed, means that perspectives are not important. Only what exists fully in the actual state of affairs matters.

2. A thing is light if it exposes or makes manifest whatsoever it shines upon. 3. True light is absolute and exposes the exact state of affairs, when it is seen under

the luminosity of the light.

E. John was an eyewitness of the light of Jesus. Although the transfiguration experience was not recorded in the book of John, this disciple was at the transfiguration of Jesus with Peter and James. (Matt 17:1-2) James and John were brothers. (Matt 10:2) He saw the light of Jesus physically and spiritually at the transfiguration. John the disciple also saw the power of Jesus in his teaching, his miracles, Jesus’ death, his resurrection, and his return to his father in heaven.

F. Later, in his letter in 1 John 1:1-3, John describes being a witness of Jesus in his experiences and telling all the need men have to know touch, and see Jesus. John was aware of the light that was Jesus in all manners.

G. John heard the words of Jesus when he said that he was the light and the truth. (John 8:12, 14:6) He wrote what he heard.

H. John the disciple’s proclamation was that there is only one true light, and that light is Jesus. (1 John 2:8)

1. John identifies hate as part of the darkness. (1 John 2:9) This compares a spiritual thing to the physical emotion of a man’s understanding. A man can sense hate and see the sun go down and darkness come.

2. In this scripture, he ascribes the sentiency of men to know God as being the true light. Man was not able to see truth until Jesus showed him the way to do so. Jesus said twice in John that he was the light. (John 8:12, 9:5) The definition of “lighteth” in John 1:9, is ”to make to see.” Man cannot see God unless he is drawn to or enlightened of his need or God. (John 6:44) Jesus wants to draw all men to himself. This truth is important so that men can become a part of the eternal scheme of God, as sons of God. (John 1:12)

13

XIII. Rejected (John 1:10-11)A. John says the world was created by the Word and it did not know him. The world did

not recognize him. At his birth, despite the recognition of angels, and as a small child it was only a few shepherds who originally heard what the angels proclaimed about him. Sometime later, a small entourage of traveling wise men followed an astrological sign to see the newborn King of Israel. These men gave the young child gifts.

B. Jesus’ family had to flee Israel to save their son’s life. (Matthew 2:13)

1. Jesus was taken away from his land as a small child and returned later with no notoriety. (Matthew 2:15) Because of the death that King Herod had brought to the children of the Jews from Bethlehem to the coasts, Jesus was probably protected by his parents. They probably did not share the events of his birth with those around them. (Matthew 2:16, Jeremiah 31:15)

2. John was an original disciple of Jesus. He was with him when Jesus’ own home town had no faith in him. James and John were the second recorded men to follow Jesus. (Matthew 4:18-22) His other disciples saw the disbelief as well.

a. The disciples followed Jesus from their calling until their death. John said that his own received him not. (John 1:11)

b. The people whom Jesus had ultimately grown up with, could not understand why that Jesus was any different than they were. Surely, he could not be the son of God, he was that carpenter’s son. (Matthew 13:55-58)

c. For this reason, they could not believe to be healed, nor could they accept him for who he really was. John described how Jesus wept because the people whom he had taught and delivered did not know or believe him when Lazarus was dead. This time period was after he had preached and healed men for almost three years. He had even raised people from the dead. (John 11:32-35)

C. Isaiah prophesied that he was rejected and despised of men. (Isaiah 53:3)1. Luke recalled the scripture from Psalms and recorded that the stone that the

builders rejected had become the head of the corner. (Luke20:17, Psalms 118:22)

2. The disciples may have had an experience within themselves when they saw the sadness of Jesus when he was rejected by his own people.

14

3. The religious church is among the greatest rejecters of his true word today, over two thousand years later. Today men have the same mindset as the Jewish leaders and the local people had in the time of Jesus and John.

4. People have decided to hear only what they wish to hear. (2Timothy 4:3-4) What can a church give out if it does not have a witness of the light? Error: the people will have only error.

5. Men of God must study to know this truth. (2Timothy 2:15) If they will not understand the word of truth, they will not have the light to give to others. They will indeed give out error. Sadly, much of the American church is indeed in error today. There is no expectation where the lack of truth cannot generate God’s presence.

XIV. The Power of Accepting Truth (John 1:12-13)A. To accept the truth, one must first be prepared to seek the truth. One must also know

that the truth that he does possess, is not of himself. 1. Faith to believe comes from a seed of faith born of something other than one’s own

creation. This seed is the Word and witness of God. (Luke 8:11)2. John the Baptist was a witness of truth. He possessed within a steadfast and sure

belief in something greater than himself. The Holy Spirit who had filled him had supplied him with the seed of faith. He had held to the truth.

3. People act on things that they believe, not on things that they do not believe. John the Baptist had lost his life for proclaiming the absolute truth of the Word. (Matthew 14:4-10)

4. Peter asked Jesus, who else can we go to for this word of eternal life. (John 6:68) 5. If one indeed accepts truth, his strength in faith is increased. Truth does not fail. In

his final days, Peter died for Jesus. He had not always prevailed in life, yet in his death, he was able to have faith in Jesus to his end. History records that Nero had Peter put to death after a long imprisonment. It was thought through history that he was crucified up-side-down. Some scholars suggest that this was the prophecy that Jesus gave to Peter in John 21:18.

6. Many of the results of faith were costly in the lives of the Jewish believers, as well as the lives of the Gentiles who believed. For the believers to hold onto this new-found truth, something had convinced them. If one is not ashamed of Christ, it is because of the spoken and written Word of God that is accepted and held as truth. (Romans 1:16-17)

7. What is the truth? There were many different opinions about the Messiah and his truths. a. Pilate, when he went to judge Jesus, asked him. “What is truth?” b. Jesus told Pilot that those who could understand what he had said, understood

because they had something inside of them that could see his Light. Pilate could not understand. (John 18:37-38)

15

c. Pilot had not sought the truth, nor had he taken the time to hear what Jesus had to say. He was not prepared to hear what Jesus said. Although Pilot did not know what Jesus represented, Pilot did know that something about this Jesus was different. Jesus spirit was unlike the spirit of the religious group of priests who sought to kill him. Pilot could have been enlightened if his heart had been prepared to hear and receive the truth.

B. The Word of God comes to those who can believe in the name of this Word. They will become Sons of God.

1. This truth could not have been acceptable terms to those involved in the religion of the Jewish society. It was considered blasphemy to claim any direct relation to God. (John 10:33)

2. Jewish priests believed that if they began to follow Jesus, the entire structure of the Jewish court and hierarchy of the society would have been in danger of being overthrown. Certain of the Jews, such as Nicodemus, did hear and believe.

3. The Jews feared Jesus influence.

C. First explanation of born again. John 1:131. John explains here what he later bears record of as the born-again experience.

John 1:13 tells how new birth must come from God. This is birth of the Holy Spirit of God through Jesus who died and was resurrected for men’s redemption from sin. (Romans 8:9) Later in the third chapter of John, we see a ruler of the Jews, Nicodemus, come to Jesus secretly. Jesus, in direct terms, tells him he must be born again. (John 3:3).

2. John tells what is not born of God. a. Being born of blood, speaking about the life of the physical body, is not being

born of God.b. Being born of the desires of the physical body is not being born of God.c. Being born of the will of man’s thought is not being born of God.

3. John says that the power to become sons of God is being born of God through belief in his son’s name. The belief in the name entails belief in everything that Jesus was as the very image of God and adherence to what he taught. (Colossians 1:15)

XV. The Birth of Jesus (John 1:14)

A. John writes that the Word was born into flesh as a human being.

16

B. The Word was given the name of Jesus by God, through the messenger angel Gabriel, who delivered the message from God to Mary. Because of her favor with God, she gave birth to the son of God. (Luke 1:30-31)

C. John describes that Jesus lived with men, and men saw in him things that must have been just like his father- God. This expression was because the glory that Jesus showed was like the glory of God, who was his father, and he the only son. Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of Greek definitions states plainly that, “the only begotten” means, “the only child.”

XVI. True witness (John 1:15)

A. John the Baptist cried out that this was the one whom he had been speaking about.

B. He said that this man was born after he was, but preferred (meaning come into being or existed) before me.

XVII. Jesus was full of Grace (John 1:16)

A. Jesus was literally God, John declared that he was full of grace, meaning graciousness in his heart.

B. He tells us that because Jesus is absolutely full of divine grace, what he gives out to us is the same thing. We receive grace because he is full of grace, without malice or sin of any kind.

C. It is not exchanging anything that we have, but giving us of what he has. This is a spiritual gift that Jesus gives. (John 4:10)

D. We can know God only by spirit. (John 4:24) Recall the two disciples on the road to Emmaus who did not recognize Jesus after he was resurrected. When they finally did recognize him, he vanished from them. They commented on how their hearts burned within themselves. (Luke 24:32)

17

E. To receive of Jesus, we must look within and see what we must change to be as God desires. The spirit change comes from without. Jesus will give us that same spirit of himself that is eternal (Romans 6:23).

F. He does not give us wrongful or bad things as his father does not. He is pure and full of graciousness towards us. (Luke 11:11-13)

G. John tells us that Jesus gives those spiritual things only in the same manner as his father,

of whose spirit he is absolutely full. The definition of full here is, “full as a container”. (John 1:16)

XVIII. Law and Unmerited favor (John 1:17)

A. The Mosaic law was given to the Israelites to understand what God wanted his people to fulfill.

B. To be able to fulfill the Law, men had to live in God’s spirit. (Romans 8:3-4)

C. With man in the state of sin since Adam, the law could not be fulfilled. 1. The Israelites knew they had broken the law. 2. The Jews knew that they had been separated from God by their sin. 3. Because they had such problems with the law, they had become religious and

formal to the point of adding law upon law to the laws which Moses had written. 4. Even in this venue, there was no relief because the heart had not changed. 5. John expressed that the favor of God was given again to Israel through

acceptance of the spirit of Jesus Christ. Acceptance was belief in his teaching, death and resurrection for redemption from sin. Righteousness came through his Holy Spirit.

6. Now man could live without sin and fulfill the law with the Spirit of Jesus within his heart.

XIX. Jesus Purpose (John 1:17)

A. John starts, in the first chapter of John, by explaining who Jesus was, using a description of what he was, the Word. He finally gives his name in verse 17, as Jesus.

B. John includes the difference between the law, which was not perfect, and the Spirit who could bring forgiveness by grace and truth found only in Jesus. Paul also taught this truth in Romans 8:3-4 and in Romans chapter 13.

18

C. John also gave to us what Jesus’ purpose was. Jesus was the Messiah, the anointed one, the Christ.

1. Messiah means anointed of God.

2. In Luke 4:18-19 Jesus himself tells what he is anointed to do.

3. Jesus gave us a comforter (the Holy Spirit) to anoint us to be able to do the same things that he did. (John 14:26)

XIX. SummaryA. John explains details of the creation and the creator by revealing the inclusion of God,

his Son and Spirit, not fully described in Genesis.

B. An explanation of the second and third person of God is found in the Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance definitions from the first and second verse. The Word is the expression of God, or after his conception and birth, Jesus.

C. A mystery of God is seen in that God’s Word was not only with God; he was God.

D. The power of God’s Word is shown in creation; he created exactly what God desired.

E. The nature of God’s Word, John says, is truth, life, and light of men.

F. The life, and the light of men, are synonymous with the Holy Spirit.

G. God sent a witness of his continued desire for men to know him through a prophet named John who was also called, John the Baptist.

H. John the disciple proclaimed the same thing about John the Baptist as the prophet said about himself. John the Baptist claimed that he was not the one whom he preached about.

I. The writer and disciple, John, ascribes the power for men to know God as the true light which lights all men.

J. The world rejected the true light, as well as did the very kinship of the Word.

19

K. John proclaims that the power to become the sons of God is to those who accept and believe on his name.

L. The first mention of a different birth is referenced in the book of John in chapter one as being born of God. This truth comes before the account of Nicodemus in chapter 3, where Jesus speaks of being born-again.

M. The disciple John bears record that the Word of God was born into flesh.

N. John the Baptist declares that the man Jesus, whom he had proclaimed, had existed before him even though John the Baptist was born in flesh before the flesh of this man was born.

O. The disciple John tells of how this man was full of the Spirit of God and gave out to those around him of this same Spirit.

P. Referring to the law of Moses, John tells that there is a difference between unmerited favor and truth through Jesus and the law of Moses. He implies, through the course of the words he wrote, that it is the Spirit of God into which men are born. This birth is through faith and the acceptance of the blood sacrifice of Jesus for sin and following the teaching of the truth that men who remain without sin are made acceptable to God.

Q. John explains that the Word was named Jesus Christ. He tells the world that Jesus was indeed the anointed one, or the Messiah.

XX. Conclusion

A. In this short passage of scripture, God’s Word and the Spirit of life are pronounced as creator. Creation was a hands-on activity of God.

B. The relevance of the Word of God and the Spirit of life is pronounced and their nature is revealed in being the life and light of men.

C. The Word was God and came into flesh. This message was a profound statement in the time of John. This proclamation was abjectly against the Jewish traditions.

20

D. John the disciple shows from his statements a little more about who God is. God expressed his love with his son. Jesus came and obtained forgiveness for mankind to show his and his father’s love towards men. This act was accomplished through Jesus. Jesus expressed God’s love towards mankind by being an example of a man full of the Holy Spirit. Because of the Holy Spirit within himself, Jesus was able to fulfill the law and be a pure sacrifice for man’s sin. Jesus was a man in a body of flesh as any man is. The Spirit of Jesus was able to conquer the flesh and the spirit of the flesh within by his continual flow of the Spirit which proceeded through him. He gave out of the healing Spirit and works of God towards men from the flow of the Spirit flowing through himself.

E. The role John the Baptist fulfilled in preparing the way for Jesus is seen clearly through his witness of the coming of the Messiah. Men made proclamation of belief in the words of John the Baptist by being baptized in water. This baptism showed others their hearts were changed towards God.

F. Need for a new birth is made evident when men are told that those who believe in the name of God’s Word, are born of God.

G. Jesus is declared to be God’s Word. All of these teachings were directly of Jesus, including his works and the works of the Holy Spirit through him, as witnessed by his disciple, John.

H. The Word is the who, and the Messiah is the what that John identifies as Jesus Christ.

I. John expresses the Holy Spirit as the life and the light that illuminates all men.

Green Exegetical Paraphrase (GEP)

Paraphrase John 1:1-17

1. Before it all began was the Word of God. The Word of God was with the exceeding, very God, and this Word was God.

2. This same Word was with God in the very beginning. 3. Everything was made by the Word, and there was nothing that was not made by him. 4. In him was life and that same Spirit of light was the illumination of men.5. This Light, showed himself in the darkness, but the darkness could not remove him. 6. A man was sent by God, his name was John. 7. This same man was sent to be a witness and give honest report of the Light that all could

have illumination through him. 8. He himself was not that illumination but came to give honest report of the Light. 9. The Light enlightens every man that comes into the world. 10. He came to the world that he made but the world did not recognize him. 11. He went to his own kindred, and they did not accept him. 12. But to those that did accept him, he gave the ability to become children of God, that

trust on his name: 13. these were not born of the blood of men and animals, or the desires of the body, nor of

the desires of man, but are born of the supreme God.

22

14. And the Word of God was made into a human being, and lived among us, and we saw his graciousness. He appeared just like the only son of his father, God, full of graciousness and truth.

15. John gave honest report about him and called out saying; This is the one I was telling you about. He appeared after me but is greater than me, because he existed before me.

16. Because he was filled with grace and truth, we have received his same grace and truth.17. For rules were given to us by Moses, but graciousness and truth came by Jesus Christ.

Scripture Addendum (Teachers study guide)

John 1:1-17

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, this was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

Rom 13

13 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Luke 4:18-19

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

John 14:26

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
