JA makes a real life connection for Kaliyah

When Kaliyah first arrived at Junior Achievement’s Finance Park, she was ready for a fun field trip. Stepping into Finance Park, she became an “adult for a day”—a

single mom with a $30k job. She immediately saw similarities with her own mother’s life. Engaged and with

great thought, she planned her family’s budget, paying bills, stretching her income with thoughtfulness,

but sometimes difficult decisions.

Seeing how hard it could be to make these financial decisions, she repeatedly asked her JA volunteer if this

was like “real life”. It was stressful, she thought, the everyday costs of raising a child.

At the end of the day, it was clear to her JA volunteer that her experience managing personal finances had a

profound impact on her. Expressing appreciation for her mother’s experience as a single mother, leaving the Park,

she summed up her thoughts,

“I am more confident in how I make spending decisions!"

Junior Achievement is a for impact organization serving the community by connecting the business community with the classroom to mentor kindergarten-12 t h grade students, preparing
