Year in Review

What makes a good news story?Events happen in the world every day. Some of these events become news stories that appear in the daily news.

What makes an event newsworthy? Brainstorm some ideas as a class.

It needs to be new, interesting and important to people. A good television news story uses words and pictures to report the most up-to-date information about an event. Watch the Behind the News report ‘News Rules’ to find out what makes news.

Students will put together their own BtN episode (of 5 stories) using a mix of 2015 BtN stories. Students will need to include a good balance of stories across different topics (for example: science, politics, world news, environment, arts, sport and human interest). Students will also make up their own poll and quizzes.

Respond to the following questions for each news story. Why did you choose this story? Summarise the main issue/message. Is the news story about a current local issue or an issue from

the past? Where and when did it happen? What new information have you found about it? Who is affected by the issue? How are they affected by the issue? Why is it important for people to know about the issue? Why will people be interested in watching the news story? Choose your favourite BtN story from 2105. Why is it your

favourite?

Episode 351st December 2015

Students will plan, produce and present their own BtN episode. Students will analyse BtN’s media campaigns for 2015.

English – Year 6 Use comprehension strategies to interpret and analyse information and ideas, comparing content from a variety of textual sources including media and digital texts (ACELY1713)

Compare texts including media texts that represent ideas and events in different ways, explaining the effects of the different approaches (ACELY1708)

Analyse how text structures and language features work together to meet the purpose of a text (ACELY1711)

Use a range of software, including word processing programs, learning new functions as required to create texts (ACELY1717)

English – Year 7Use a range of software, including word processing programs, to confidently create, edit and publish written and multimodal texts (ACELY1728)

Media Arts – Year 5 & 6Develop skills with media technologies to shape space, time, movement and lighting within images, sounds and text (ACAMAM063)

Plan, produce and present media artworks for specific audiences and purposes using responsible media practice (ACAMAM064)

Page 4:  · Web viewASMA: I saw a little girl, she was outside and she was crying because she wasn't playing with anybody, so me and my friends helped her out, and we took her to the playground

People in the newsIn this activity students will identify people that have made the news this year, explore why they are in the news and write a short biography.

Who is this? Why were they in the news in 2015? Write a short biography on this person. Explore their achievements. Find three interesting facts about this person and share with the class. Imagine you could sit down and talk to them. What questions would you ask about their life and their

achievements?

Feature storyStudents will write a profile of a classmate, with a particular focus on a talent, interest or passion of that classmate. On a piece of paper, write your name and a talent, interest or passion you have that you would like to share with the class. These topics will become the focus of a feature story as students take it in turns picking a name out of the hat. Students will then:

Write interview questions based on the topic Interview classmate – check out these interviewing tips Write a feature story – find out what makes a good feature story here. Celebrate the persons’

strengths in your writing. Share your story with the class. Choose a BtN feature story from 2015. Why is it your favourite? Leave a comment on the Kids’

Causes story page.

After completing the BtN 2015 Year in Review quiz, students will design and write their own news quiz.

1. Make a list of news stories from 2015 that were important to you. Visit Behind the News or CBBC Newsround for news stories.

2. Write a structure for your quiz. Include a quiz title, target audience, time frame in which quiz needs to be completed and news themes.

3. Write and design your quiz. Consider including multiple choice, true or false, picture quiz and spelling questions. It is important that your questions are based on news events and themes from 2015. Make it fun, engaging and educational.

4. Give your quiz to a classmate to complete. Provide your classmate with a score and correct answers.

Hi I'm Nathan and welcome to the last show for 2015! To celebrate we've got a very special program for you today.

We’ve got our annual 2015 Super Quiz to test yourself on plus some never-before-seen bloopers too.

Aus. News

Reporter: Carl Smith

INTRO: But to kick off the show here's Carl with some of the biggest stories that made headlines in Australia this year. A quick warning to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers though, this story contains images of people who've died.

2015 began quietly in Canberra.

TONY ABBOTT, FORMER PRIME MINISTER: The Australian people rejected chaos. And we are not going to take them back to that chaos.

But then, well, Tony Abbott introduced another tough budget. And he supported his friend, parliamentary speaker Bronwyn Bishop through this scandal.

REPORTER: Last year she flew to a political fundraiser, in a luxury chopper, at a cost of more than 5000 bucks!

By September, things in Canberra were beginning to fall apart. Suddenly Australia had a new leader.

MALCOLM TURNBULL, PM: We're going to make decisions carefully, consultatively, and listening to - not just talking to - listening to as many people as we can.

And we farewelled yet another PM.

Then there were some important anniversaries. You might remember our special episode on the ANZACS marking 100 years since Australian troops stormed the shores of Gallipoli in World War One.

REPORTER: It's still remembered as the first real battle we took part in as a nation.

We also celebrated the 30th anniversary of this moment.

REPORTER: Uluru and the area surrounding it was handed back to its traditional owners by the Governor-General.

And some other important moments in our country's history, like the Wave Hill walk off where Aboriginal people fought to have their land returned to them.

©ABC 2015

Page 8:  · Web viewASMA: I saw a little girl, she was outside and she was crying because she wasn't playing with anybody, so me and my friends helped her out, and we took her to the playground

GOUGH WHITLAM, FORMER PM: I solemnly hand to you these deeds as proof in Australian law that these lands belong to the Gurindji people.

There were also some really difficult moments for Australia in 2015. Early in the year, we heard about frustrated asylum seekers protesting on Manus Island.

REPORTER: They say it's cruel to be kept in the conditions they are for as long as they are.

Two convicted Australian criminals were executed for their crimes in Indonesia. And we learned a bit more about some of the troubles in the economy.

REPORTER: 64 billion dollars was wiped off of the Australian stock exchange in one day last week.

But of course, 2015 wasn't without its fun. You might remember the storm when this pirate, er I mean movie star, smuggled some illegal cargo into the country.

BARNABY JOYCE, MP: I'm terribly sorry I didn't know, Mr Depp has to either take his dogs back to California or we're going to have to euthanise them.

And we also heard from some who thought it was time for a new national anthem.

REPORTER: Hmm, not bad. But maybe something more like this?

It was a big and busy year in Australia and we hope you enjoyed learning about it all with us!

World News

Reporter: Amelia Moseley

INTRO: Now this year there were a bunch of stories that got the whole world talking - some for very good reasons and some for very sad reasons. Here's Amelia with a look at some of the biggest international stories of 2015.

One of the biggest stories of the year centred around refugees.

JEHAD: We need clothes. My bag is lost. I have nothing. I have just this.

Millions of people fled war in the Middle Eastern country of Syria, and many made their way here to Europe.

REPORTER EMMA: This sight is becoming very common in a lot of European countries. Tens of thousands of asylum seekers, travelling across borders, desperate for a new home.

Countries like Germany, France, Sweden, Canada and even Australia agreed to take thousands in.

©ABC 2015

Page 10:  · Web viewASMA: I saw a little girl, she was outside and she was crying because she wasn't playing with anybody, so me and my friends helped her out, and we took her to the playground

Natural disasters left a lot of other people in need too. In Nepal, two massive earthquakes killed a lot of people and ruined these ancient cities. Help came from governments and aid agencies all over the world, but even now many people are still trying to rebuild.

In Vanuatu, a powerful storm left a lot of kids homeless and out of school. A hurricane hit the US, Mexico and the Caribbean, and then there was a typhoon in the Philippines.

REPORTER CARL: This wild weather lashed the Philippines for nearly a week, forcing thousands of kids to flee their homes.

There was also an Indonesian volcano that left a thick cloud of smoke over Bali.

Other events also got the world worried. In Paris, a series of terrorist attacks inspired the world to stand up and support those affected. In Greece, there were serious money problems.

REPORTER MATT: Greece's parliament has now agreed to Europe's loan, and the tough conditions that go with it.

China hit trouble on the share market.

MAN: There's a lot of panic.

WOMAN: I feel scared, very scared.

Other events also changed some people's lives in more positive ways, like when same-sex marriage became legal in Ireland and in the US! And we learnt more about far, far away planets like Jupiter and Pluto.

We also found signs of water on Mars.

NASA: We now know that Mars once was a planet very much like Earth with warm, salty seas with fresh water lakes.

We discovered a new planet a little like ours, and we began a new search for aliens.

STEPHEN HAWKING: Mankind has a deep need to explore, to learn, to know. It is important to us to know if we are alone in the dark.

But some interesting things happened on Earth as well: an extra second was added to the world's clocks, the Queen became the longest serving ruler of the British Empire and William and Kate added a princess to their royal family.

But most importantly, we finally got multi-cultural emojis to represent the world. A move that got the thumbs up from pretty much everyone - except this kid.

BOY: They're more diverse, but there needs to be a frowning pile of poo.

Kids’ Causes

Reporter: Matt Holbrook

INTRO: Now the biggest stars of our show are always the kids that invite us into their lives each week. They all go to huge lengths to tell their story and often it makes a big impact. Here's Matt with a look just some of the kids that moved us this year.

Lots of you this year showed why it's so important to help others whether it's preparing for bushfire season.

VICTORIA: We have to burn this off, because this is the stuff that catches alight. This is making it easier for when a real fire occurs.

Learning CPR.

KID: We are trained now. It's cool we can know how to help people if they're not breathing.

Or helping farmers affected by drought.

Page 14:  · Web viewASMA: I saw a little girl, she was outside and she was crying because she wasn't playing with anybody, so me and my friends helped her out, and we took her to the playground

KID: There’s now no grass for the animals to eat.

Some of you welcomed refugees and new arrivals to Australia.

ASMA: I saw a little girl, she was outside and she was crying because she wasn't playing with anybody, so me and my friends helped her out, and we took her to the playground and played with her.

Others drew attention to important causes like extreme poverty.

PRISCA: So you kind of get a sense of how these people are living, and also what you take for granted every day.

We've also heard about what makes your school unique.

ZOE: Welcome to our Reptile Room here at Lilydale High School.

LACHLAN: Right now, we have two species of frog, 25 species of lizard, 15 types of snakes. In total, 180 reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates!

COOBER PEDY KID: I find it better here than other places because you can do whatever you like. If you’re in the city you don’t really get this much opportunities and here it's open - it's the best.

We met some really talented young athletes.

Got an inside look at the Ashes

Bloopers/Fun

INTRO: So how did you guys go in the quiz? I thought there would be more questions about penguins to be honest. Right, well that nearly wraps us up for this year but we couldn't finish without showing you just how much fun we have making BtN for you each and every week. Well actually mostly it's Matt having a lot of fun and us doing all the work. I am ok with that. Take a look

Being a BtN reporter is serious business.

MATT: Sorry, I shouldn't do it so hard.

It takes a lot of hard work.

NATHAN Selfie, selfie?

So you really have to keep your energy up.

CARL: I am sick and tired of eating chicken noodles.

AMELIA: Mmm, buzz buzz.

MATT: I'm probably going to eat five or six now. Maybe ten.

You have to do a lot of research.

ELOISE: So Zeus, just how important is your job?

©ABC 2015

Page 17:  · Web viewASMA: I saw a little girl, she was outside and she was crying because she wasn't playing with anybody, so me and my friends helped her out, and we took her to the playground

MATT: The most important part about playing Albert Einstein is knowing how to have a good mo'. So I spend most of the time I've got just smoothing it out.

And you really have to know what you're talking about.

MATT: So what you've got to do with the hair is flick it back a bit, and do one of them, and that's it. That's Einstein.

Sometimes, you have to really get into the story.

KID: Hmm not bad.

But only when it's absolutely necessary.

MATT: Kowabunga dudes!

MATT: I feel my eyebrows don’t get enough attention.

Sometimes you get to film in exotic locations.

MATT: Believe it or not, toilets are lifesavers. Good job toilet!

CARL: Surges of energy that we call waves can even be pretty fun.

And try things you've never tried before.

ELOISE: Playing tennis with no vision is really hard!

AMELIA: Hip hop school, it's really cool, it's better than the pool!

Ah, moving on.

We often need a hand to help tell stories.

KID 1: What it'll be?

KID 2: Milk. Full cream.

BOY: It's really good. He's very talented and he very much knows what he's talking about.

PUPPET: My Sand-twiches. Stay away from my sand-twiches.

Of course, sometimes things get tough.

And don't go according to plan.

AMELIA: Oh no, I didn't do it.

EMMA: It's really hot in there and I'm gonna get set on fire! Haha
