Kindergarten Pretend and Learn Lesson Unit: Weather Pretend and Learn Theme: Texas Rodeo/Western Whole Group Introduction to Center Center Introduction 1. Set up center using materials below and/or printables from internet or Social Studies resources. 2. Introduce the center by brainstorming vocabulary related to a school. The teacher might want to create an anchor chart of these words. 3. Discuss what happens in a rodeo. Have you ever been to the rodeo? What do you see/hear? (can/have/are) 4. Tour the center and model how to use the center with the help of a few students. 5. Discuss “What to Do” and “What Not to Do” in the center. Center Participation and Organization 1. Students may make own stick horse and have stick pony races. 2. Set out different sizes of cowboy hats and have kids race to sort by smallest to largest. 3. Provide western accessories for dress up. 4. Play a game of horseshoes. 5. Lasso a pair of cowboy boots or longhorn face taped to back of chair and kids lasso with hula hoop. 6. Make fools gold. 7. Students write chili recipes 8. Drink cactus juice (green Gatorade) 9. Students trace their bodies and draw/glue materials to make it look western. 10. Make “Wanted” signs/poster with students’ pictures. 11. Play the “rancher says” or cowboy/cowgirl says” instead of Simon Says. 12. Writing: I feel like a cowboy when____. Take picture of kids, glue on construction paper and they complete sentence stem.Technology: Make a digital card http://www.mescards.com/cowboys/card-template-2.php?title=Blank, give children digital cameras to take pictures in center and create movies. If available, provide students with a recorder and they may record their stories or what is happening in the rodeo. Create a “green screen” for pictures and different western backgrounds.
