CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK: JAN. 29-FEB. 4 Did you know? The Catholic School System of Cleveland is the largest in Ohio, and the 5th largest of the 196 Catholic Dioceses in the U.S. Over 45,000 students are enrolled this year. St. Mary School is one of 95 elementary schools, and four of our 20 High Schools are here in the Akron area. PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN - Every employee and volunteer working with children who have received VIRTUS training are required to view the revisions to our Diocesan Policy and Standards of Conduct. There is a Completion Form in the parish office for your signature. Please do so by January 31, 2017. Thank you

for your care and protection of the children we serve here at St. Bernard.

LIGHTHOUSE MEDIASee the Display in the niche as you leave. CDs, Books, etc. are available for a minimal donation. Be inspired, increase your knowledge, pray.

Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati - Man of the

BeatitudesBorn in Turin, Italy into a family of wealth and status, Pier had

good friends, enjoyed hiking, skiing, museums and music, and was involved in political action. He found that deep prayer, service to the poor, and a passion for bringing others to Christ led to a life of purpose, peace, and happiness. He died at the age of 24, and beatified on May 20, 1990.

Aborting America: The Story of an Ex-

Abortionist and Ex-Atheist

Bernard Nathanson was an American medical doctor from New York who helped to found the National Abortion Rights Action League, but then later became an acclaimed pro-life activist. He worked with Betty Friedan and others for the legalization of abortion in the United States.  Nathanson has written that he was responsible for more than 75,000 abortions throughout his pro-choice career.

With these CDs and other materials let our LIGHTHOUSE media display be a guide for your life in Christ. It is alit in the northeast corner of the church. Dear St. Bernard Community,

A friend of mine once told me that when he was old enough his parents would have him help wrap Christmas gifts for his younger brothers and sisters. He said he enjoyed it because he knew beforehand what each of his siblings would be getting. And knowing beforehand how excited each of them would be with their gift, he said he could hardly wait to see their reaction on Christmas morning. But, he was sworn to secrecy and so he waited with great anticipation.

It is kind of how I feel about this digital resource for you all here at St. Bernard and over at St. Mary Parish. It is called, FORMED: the Catholic Faith on Demand. Currently the pastoral council and I are viewing a 'demo' version. It has a selected collection of feature films, eBooks, video-based study programs, and audio presentations by some of the Church's foremost presenters. All of these will be FREE to you and available in both English and Español.

But don't just take my word for it. Here are a few comments from folks around Akron:

Just watched the 3rd Segment of The Wild Goose Series on THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND FIRE! AMAZING!! ABOUT 30 MINS LONG BUT SO WORTH IT! MUST WATCH! John M. in Cuyahoga Falls

I watched a movie last night from the site!Joseph of Nazareth. Never saw it before. Great movie! Lisa J. in Munroe Falls

I spent about an hour on the FORMED website and I must say...WOW!! If nothing else, I find the website very educational. I started to watch the one movie, Finding Fatima, and found it bringing me into the movie, wanting to learn more about the events (and I will go back). I feel the movies would be good for me, especially on a snowy or rainy Sunday afternoon. I listened to Brother Francis a little and I know I will be back!! Thank you for getting this website to us; I really feel that the parishioners will be as awe-struck as me!! The little that I saw was an excellent source for education. Kathy K. in Atwater

Check out their website: https://formed.org. The Catholic Faith. On Demand. Hopefully, coming soon to your phone and computer via your faith community of St. Bernard.

I'm running again the information on the last page because it is very important for a good number of people in our parish. This V Encuentro (Fifth Encounter or Meeting) began in 2014 with parish and diocesan meetings. It builds to regional events throughout the United States this year and concludes with the meeting of delegates near Dallas, TX in September, 2018. The purpose is to formulate a fifth pastoral plan for Ministry to Hispanic/Latino Catholics in this country.

One of the statistics we priests of Cleveland learned from the CARA study was that the Catholic population over the next 25 years will not change much in our diocese. Why? Because in all 8 counties of the Diocese the Hispanic/Latino population continues to increase.

For over 33 years St. Bernard was THE parish in the area serving the Spanish-speaking Community (Latino or Hispanic). Much of this was the single-handed leadership of Fr. Paul Schindler. Today we see fewer new arrivals but definitely growing families. As always was the case, many of the families do not live here in downtown but, like you, in other parishes. For the sake of the children, who attend school, make friends, and navigate their world in English I have worked these past years to connect Spanish-speaking families with the Catholic parish near their home. At their local parish children can enroll in school or religion classes with the neighborhood friends. Families can attend Mass and celebrate the

sacraments. Or still come to St. Bernard for the cultural experience.

With the knowledge now that every parish has Spanish-speaking families, but not necessarily Spanish-dependent, every parish can begin to look to what St. Bernard has done for decades - have a staff or staff person available to respond. And, if someone is not available, call us at St. Bernard.

Last Saturday, for example, I celebrated a Baptism at Holy Family in Stow. Some family members were Spanish-dependent but Stow is where they live and Holy Family School is where their child attends. Why come to St. Bernard when it would be rare to ever see them in our parish? It is my hope that one day, a person

can walk into any parish to find the assistance they need.

I think bishops have learned from their predecessors and our immigrant ancestors that building a church for the Italians on this block, the Germans on that block, and the Irish down the street - is DONE! New immigrants will integrate into the existing parish in which they live. Or else, a hundred years from now bishops and dioceses will be stuck again with near-empty, financially-draining church buildings where once were vibrant Catholic parishes.

Please pray this week for the administrators and staff, teachers and students in our Catholic Schools. Check out St. Mary's website. Fr. Dan

V Encuentro: A National EncounterSt. Bernard Parish among others in our Diocese will participate in this National Encounter in response to the growing number of Catholics of Hispanic origin. The Five Sessions will be held here during Lent. FYI...

WHAT IS THE V ENCUENTRO? The V Encuentro is a four-year process of ecclesial reflection and action that invites all Catholics in the United States to intense missionary activity, consultation, leadership development, and identification of best ministerial practices in the spirit of the New Evangelization. The process has been proposed as a priority activity of the USCCB’s Strategic Plan for 2017-2020. The V Encuentro starts at the grass-roots level and calls for the development of resources and initiatives to better serve the fast-growing Hispanic population in dioceses, parishes, ecclesial movements, and other Catholic organizations and institutions in light of its theme: Missionary Disciples: Witnesses of God’s Love.

WHO PARTICIPATES IN V ENCUENTRO? All leaders in arch/dioceses, parishes, lay ecclesial movements and other Catholic organizations and institutions are invited to participate by encountering Hispanic/Latino Catholics, particularly those living in the periphery through the missionary process of evangelization and consultation of the V Encuentro.

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF V ENCUENTRO? The main goal of the V Encuentro is to discern ways in which the Church in the United States can better respond to the Hispanic/Latino presence, and

to strengthen the ways in which Hispanics/Latinos respond to the call to the New Evangelization as missionary disciples serving the entire Church.

WHAT ARE THE THEMES OF THE FIVE-WEEK EVANGELIZING PROCESS AND CONSULTATION? 1. Called to a loving encounter with Jesus 2. With words and actions: Do it! 3. Walking together with Jesus 4. Bearing fruits of new life 5. Celebrating the joy of being missionary disciples

*The five themes are inspired by Pope Francis’ call to create a culture of Encounter. The Joy of the Gospel (#24)¿QUE ES EL V ENCUENTRO?
