Some students will be getting on a bus for the first time, some will be away from Mom and Dad for the first time, or they are headed to a new school and a new classroom. Many of those children will be very anxious. The other side of that classroom door is completely unknown. The worst could possibly happen. They will wonder if they can even do it! Likely, the same can be said every time we have an opportunity to talk about Jesus. We’re afraid. More than that, terrified. What if the worst happens? We could look so foolish. We could stammer and trip over our words. We could say things all wrong, or run into a question to which we don’t have an answer. We could lose a friend or come off as “weird.” What if people find out that we believe Jesus with all our heart but still sin against him? What if they call us hypocrites? It is to such terror-stricken, spiritually terrified people that God speaks through the prophet Isaiah: “Do not fear, because I am with you.” Picture a new kindergartener walking onto the school grounds and confronted by a couple of students intent on taking his lunch? Just in time, the youngster’s older brother in sixth grade walks up to ward off the bullies. God is with us, just like the big brother was with his little brother. Except our God is infinitely more powerful, infinitely more wise, infinitely more caring. He is not just our big brother, he is our God. The creator-of-all- things has our back! GOD’S ENCOURAGING WORDWhen I am frightened

“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” - Isaiah 41:10

Soon, students and teachers will be headed back to the classroom.

It is to such terror-stricken, spiritually terrified people that God speaks through the prophet Isaiah: “Do not fear, because I am with you.”

Picture a new kindergartener walking onto the school grounds and confronted by a couple of students intent on taking his lunch? Just in time, the youngster’s older brother in sixth grade walks up to ward off the bullies.

God is with us, just like the big brother was with his little brother. Except our God is infinitely more powerful, infinitely more wise, infinitely more caring. He is not just our big brother, he is our God. The creator-of-all-things has our back! The courage we need to speak up about our faith rests in the one in whom we believe—the one who came to be with us to rescue us from sin and death. In his great love for us, he strengthens and helps us, and keeps us safe.

So, do not be afraid. Don’t be afraid this fall or at any time to talk about the Savior who has come to rescue all humanity. Do not be afraid. He is with you.

From the Vault: An Article from Gail Thornton’s Five Years of Blessings

Article #12: “Let Us Go Out and Praise the Lord”

For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.Psalm 100:5

We are near the completion of our new building and are entering the final phase of the finished work. We are even making plans to actually begin holding services in the new church. Let us take some time to reflect on the blessings the Lord has provided us over the last two or three years. First and foremost let us offer praise and thanksgiving to our almighty God. He has provided the means and the people, which have been necessary for our new building to come to fruition.

A lot has been asked of our congregation over the time it has taken to complete this building project. The ongoing prayers of the members of Redeemer’s congregation have been answered every time a roadblock seemed to get in the way. People have stepped forward and put in hundreds of hours of volunteer work. Our budget has grown and people have stepped up to meet the need. We needed a larger than expected loan and members pledged enough to make the payments. Some have stepped up to buy paraments, and various other items. Over the three years the costs of building have gone up, but so has the determination of this congregation to complete a building that will honor our Lord. Everyone in this congregation has contributed and deserves a pat on the back and a big thank you for their efforts. There would be no new church without your efforts.

There are not enough words to thank and show our appreciation to Leroy Miller, our volunteer project supervisor over the last seven months. His was a job that was supposed to require a few hours a week from his time. It has virtually turned into a second career as a coordinator, custodian, wire installer, irrigation pipe man, painter, floorworker, and much more that we have not heard about.

Another member that has been on the job site each day is Larry Johnson. He has provided equipment and expertise for excavation work, cleanup, installing pipelines, and a host of other tasks at our request. Larry did all of this work as a

volunteer. We offer a heartfelt “thank you” for all he has done.

Anytime Leroy needed help he called on his right-hand man Del Guthmiller who painted, pulled wires, worked on the irrigation system, and performed many other tasks. Del too has quietly spent many, many hours of volunteer work behind the scenes. We greatly appreciate Del’s efforts on the new church.

The LaBarr family, including Erv, Denise, and Lance, put in the irrigation system for the new church and piped in Nob Hill Water as well. Their work and expertise has been invaluable in getting

this work completed. Thank you for all the effort. It is appreciated.

Most people don’t realize that behind the scenes one person has worked tirelessly to obtain our loans, complete the necessary paperwork for each phase of the job, and get the payments out on time. That person is Darla Thornton. We also owe her a debt of gratitude.

Max Gabbard, our contractor, has been great to work with and has worked through many problems that have arisen as the project has progressed. His foreman and finish man Don Hargraves has been pleasant to work with and has done an outstanding job on the finish work. We are thankful God provided us with men such as these.

We have also been fortunate to have Mike Kovatch and Lee Poulson come forward to install the carpet and other flooring in the new church. They are doing an outstanding job. We thank them and God that they are available and willing to carry out this important task.

I have mentioned some people specifically, but I know I have left out many others who have put in a great deal of time. In fact, we all have helped in one way or another. Sometimes Lutherans are thought of as sitting in the pews each Sunday and being very quiet and reserved. The fact is, the Lord has helped us find the time, talents, and treasure to build a wonderful new church. Let us therefore go out and praise the Lord. Let us enjoy what God has provided and tell others of what he has done!

I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever.Psalm 86:12

News at Redeemer: Voters’ Meeting July 2018 – Budget Proposal

Pastor Cherney

On July 15 members came together during the Bible Study hour for our annual Budget Meeting. This meeting gave the council, through the dutiful work of the Budget Committee, the opportunity to propose a new budget for Redeemer effective July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019, our fiscal year. And… the new budget was approved! Anyone who is curious as to how this changes the priorities and procedures of Redeemer’s ministry for the next year, be sure to find Pastor or one of our councilmen. We certainly thank our council and all those who contributed to the process.

The Voters’ Meeting also proved to be a chance to approve some other church action as well. Topics discussed and voted on included:

Maintaining “informal dismissal” (the newer style) for the next quarter – Points were raised about the pros and cons of organized dismissal vs. the “free-form” format we tested in June. It was decided to keep a looser, less formal dismissal until October at which time it can be reassessed by the congregation.

New Evangelism Program in Fall 2018 – The Outreach Committee (Scott McLean, Matt Johnson, and Pastor Cherney) were able to research and video-conference with a representative of Praise & Proclaim Ministries, Dave Malnes. It was proposed to the voters to pursue the evangelism initiative with training that Malnes offers; the date scheduled currently being the weekend of November 2. Our hope is to have great volunteer involvement for the program so that the Redeemer family can become that much greater at our personal and community evangelism efforts! If you have questions about the program, be sure to catch Scott or Matt, or email/text Pastor.

Nominations of Councilmen – We thank Henry Christman, John Gruber, and Norm Alderson for their work as secretary, elder, and treasurer, respectively. With their terms finished, the voters approved the nomination of Dustin Melius and Matt Johnson to council effective immediately. God bless your work in his kingdom!

Voters’ meetings are, by definition, a vital part of the church’s activity. Matters of worship, budget, short-term/long-term planning, and a host of other topics are fielded by faithful members trying to proclaim Christ’s work in us and through us in the most honest, Scriptural way possible. If you’re wondering if you’re welcome at one of Redeemer’s voters’ meetings, the quick test is one question: “Am I member of Redeemer?” If the answer is “yes,” your input and ideas are more than welcome as we work together as council, Pastor, and congregation to fulfill the Great Commission and glorify our God with the spread of his life-giving Word.
