Year 7 Classification Topic: Revision Checklist

1. Explain the difference between a natural and an artificial system of classification.

2. Define the term species.

3. Know what the binomial system is and be able to write down the binomial name of an organism in the correct way given its genus and species. Genus should be written with a capital letter and the species name with a lower case letter. This should be underlined or in italics if typed.

4. Know that living organisms can be classified into five kingdoms (Bacteria, Protoctists, Fungi, Plants, Animals). Know the basic differences between organisms in these 5 Kingdoms.

5. Know the 7 levels of organisation in the classification system: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.

6. Be able to describe the main features of bacteria (cell wall, no nucleus, reproduce by splitting in 2) and fungi (mycelium of hyphae, no chlorophyll, spores, cell wall of chitin).

7. Be able to describe the main features of mosses (simple stem, no veins, spores) ferns (young ‘leaves’ coiled in bud, spore bodies in clusters), conifers (cone-bearing trees and shrubs) and flowering plants (seeds enclosed in fruit).

8. Know the characteristic features of arthropods

9. Know the characteristic features of insects (three body regions, three pairs of legs, wings), crustaceans (two pairs of antennae) arachnids (four pairs of legs) and myriapods (appendages on all segments

10. Know the characteristic features of fish (scales, gills, fins), amphibians (no scales, aquatic and terrestrial life cycle), reptiles (dry scaly skin, soft-shelled egg), birds (feathers, wings, hard-shelled egg) and mammals (hair, mammary glands).

11. Be able to use a key to identify major plant and animal groups.

12. Be able to construct a key

13. Outline the work of John Ray and Carl Linnaeus in developing a modern classification system.

What is the definition of “species”?

Hybrid animals such as the Liger are infertile (they can’t have babies). This is because their parents are two different species.
