Edexcel exam feedback

Paper 1: Macbeth (part a), Jekyll and Hyde (part a) and Blood Brothers / An Inspector Calls / Journey’s End

Question 1: Macbeth (part a)

SECTION A – Shakespeare

You should spend 25 minutes on this section.

Macbeth – from Act 1, Scene 2.

In this extract, Macbeth and Banquo meet with the witches who share their predictions.

Enter MACBETH and BANQUO

MACBETH38

So foul and fair a day I have not seen.

BANQUO39

How far is’t call’d to Forres? What are these

40

So wither’d and so wild in their attire,

41

That look not like the inhabitants o’ the earth,

42

And yet are on’t? Live you? Or are you aught

43

That man may question? You seem to understand me,

44

By each at once her chappy finger laying

45

Upon her skinny lips: you should be women,

46

And yet your beards forbid me to interpret

47

That you are so.

MACBETH48

Speak, if you can: what are you?

FIRST WITCH

Page 2: wheninromeeng.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewMacbeth asks the witches questions wanting to know how they have come about this information – demonstrates he isn’t quite certain

49

All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Glamis!

SECOND WITCH50

All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor!

THIRD WITCH51

All hail, Macbeth, thou shalt be king hereafter!

BANQUO52

Good sir, why do you start; and seem to fear

53

Things that do sound so fair? I’ the name of truth,

54

Are ye fantastical, or that indeed

55

Which outwardly ye show? My noble partner

56

You greet with present grace and great prediction

57

Of noble having and of royal hope,

58

That he seems rapt withal: to me you speak not.

59

If you can look into the seeds of time,

60

And say which grain will grow and which will not,

61

Speak then to me, who neither beg nor fear

62

Your favours nor your hate.

FIRST WITCH63

Hail!

SECOND WITCH64

Hail!

THIRD WITCH65

Hail!

Page 3: wheninromeeng.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewMacbeth asks the witches questions wanting to know how they have come about this information – demonstrates he isn’t quite certain

FIRST WITCH66

Lesser than Macbeth, and greater.

SECOND WITCH67

Not so happy, yet much happier.

THIRD WITCH68

Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none:

69

So all hail, Macbeth and Banquo!

FIRST WITCH70

Banquo and Macbeth, all hail!

MACBETH71

Stay, you imperfect speakers, tell me more:

72

By Sinel’s death I know I am thane of Glamis;

73

But how of Cawdor? The thane of Cawdor lives,

74

A prosperous gentleman; and to be king

75

Stands not within the prospect of belief,

76

No more than to be Cawdor. Say from whence

77

You owe this strange intelligence? Or why

78

Upon this blasted heath you stop our way

79

With such prophetic greeting? Speak, I charge you.

Witches vanish

BANQUO80

The earth hath bubbles, as the water has,

81

And these are of them. Whither are they vanish’d?

MACBETH

Page 4: wheninromeeng.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewMacbeth asks the witches questions wanting to know how they have come about this information – demonstrates he isn’t quite certain

82

Into the air; and what seem’d corporal melted

83

As breath into the wind. Would they had stay’d!

BANQUO84

Were such things here as we do speak about?

85

Or have we eaten on the insane root

86

That takes the reason prisoner?

MACBETH87

Your children shall be kings.

BANQUO88

You shall be king.

MACBETH89

And thane of Cawdor too: went it not so?

BANQUO90

To the selfsame tune and words. Who’s here?

1 (a) Explore how Shakespeare presents the reactions of Macbeth and Banquo to the witches.

Refer closely to the extract in your answer.

(20 marks)

Indicative content:

Banquo questions the appearance of the witches and whether they are real ‘not like the inhabitants o’ the earth’ and ‘are ye yet fantastical?’

The witches are presented as ugly beings connoting a scepticism and lack of trust ‘chappy finger’, ‘skinny lips’ and ‘beards’

Banquo asks why Macbeth fears what the witches say to him when it sounds so good. ‘why do you start; and seem to fear / Things that do sound so fair?’

Page 5: wheninromeeng.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewMacbeth asks the witches questions wanting to know how they have come about this information – demonstrates he isn’t quite certain

Macbeth appears ‘rapt withal’ suggesting he is consumed by thoughts in response to the witches

Banquo shows curiosity and asks the witches what might become of him ‘speak then to me’ although less inclined about it all in comparison to Macbeth ‘who neither beg nor fear / Your favours nor your hate.’

Macbeth’s interest has been caught – use of imperatives instructing the witches to stay and tell him more ‘Stay, you imperfect speakers’, ‘tell me more’, ‘Speak I charge you.’

Macbeth asks the witches questions wanting to know how they have come about this information – demonstrates he isn’t quite certain whether to believe them or not ‘But how of Cawdor?’ – this is because the current thane of Cawdor lives. ‘Say from whence you owe this strange intelligence?’ reveals his uncertainty about what they are telling him. ‘Or why upon this blasted heath you stop our way / with such prophetic greeting?’ Macbeth is uncertain why they have been stopped now with this news.

Exclamatory sentence ‘would they had stay’d!’ reveals his desire to know more and his intrigue.

The metaphor spoken by Banquo ‘Or have we eaten on the insane root / that takes the reason prisoner?’ reveals he does not trust the witches and is cautious about listening to them too heavily.
