1 (a) Explore how Shakespeare presents the reactions of Macbeth and Banquo to the witches.
Refer closely to the extract in your answer.

Indicative content:
Banquo questions the appearance of the witches and whether they are real ‘not like the inhabitants o’ the earth’ and ‘are ye yet fantastical?’
The witches are presented as ugly beings connoting a scepticism and lack of trust ‘chappy finger’, ‘skinny lips’ and ‘beards’
Banquo asks why Macbeth fears what the witches say to him when it sounds so good. ‘why do you start; and seem to fear / Things that do sound so fair?’
Macbeth appears ‘rapt withal’ suggesting he is consumed by thoughts in response to the witches
Banquo shows curiosity and asks the witches what might become of him ‘speak then to me’ although less inclined about it all in comparison to Macbeth ‘who neither beg nor fear / Your favours nor your hate.’
Macbeth’s interest has been caught – use of imperatives instructing the witches to stay and tell him more ‘Stay, you imperfect speakers’, ‘tell me more’, ‘Speak I charge you.’
Macbeth asks the witches questions wanting to know how they have come about this information – demonstrates he isn’t quite certain whether to believe them or not ‘But how of Cawdor?’ – this is because the current thane of Cawdor lives. ‘Say from whence you owe this strange intelligence?’ reveals his uncertainty about what they are telling him. ‘Or why upon this blasted heath you stop our way / with such prophetic greeting?’ Macbeth is uncertain why they have been stopped now with this news.
Exclamatory sentence ‘would they had stay’d!’ reveals his desire to know more and his intrigue.
The metaphor spoken by Banquo ‘Or have we eaten on the insane root / that takes the reason prisoner?’ reveals he does not trust the witches and is cautious about listening to them too heavily.
