Class Updates In Science, students went outside to investigate how different surfaces impact the speed and distance a ball travels. Students went to Art today. In Math, students sorted addition problems based on whether tens, hundreds, or both would be composed. We solved addition problems using the methods we learned on Friday. In Social Studies, students began a graphic organizer to write an opinion paragraph about what they could do to make the world a better place. Students have to identify a problem and explain how their solution will make the world a better place using supporting details. In Reading, students read the Japanese folktale "Ooka and the Honest Thief". We made inferences to understand the story better. Students discussed places in the story when Ooka, the main character, was fair and unfair.

Class Updates Students presented their current events. In Science, students had to use materials (a T pin, index card, unifix cube, string and rubber ball) to change an object's motion. Students had Guidance today. In Math, students learned methods for adding three-digit numbers. One method involved rounding and the other two methods involved place value. In Writing, we discussed how when using a storyteller’s voice we need to describe what is happening by using our senses. In Reading, students used evidence from Boxes for Katje to infer character traits for characters from the book. We had our September Birthday Celebration!

Class Updates In Social Studies, students finished presenting their plays demonstrating how citizens can contribute to the common good. We watched a video of a boy who participated in the political process to make the crossing signal last longer so his friend had enough time to cross the street. Students had Music today. In Math, students rounded numbers to the nearest ten and hundred using a number line. In Writing, we discussed how when we are writing a story we want to write about a small moment that happened. I used the analogy of a watermelon and a seed. Students determine the topic they want to write about (the watermelon) and then have to determine a small moment that happened to them (the seed). In Reading, we discussed the point of view of the narrator in Boxes for Katje . We read a biography of Candace Fleming, the author, on our Chrome books. We used evidence from the biography to infer why Candace may have written Boxes for Katje .

Announcements Your child brought home two important documents last week: Parent/Child Reunification Authorization for Release of Student Form (Yellow) and Emergency Dismissal Form (Blue). They are due back by September 10th.
Class Updates In Science, students were given a unifix cube and index card. They had to describe the position of the unifix cube in relation to the index card. We made a list of vocabulary words that described the block's position. Students then had to place their index card and unifix cube somewhere on their desk. They covered their desk with a folder so their partner could not see where the objects were located. Students had to ask questions back and forth using positional words to find out where the unifix cube and index card were located on their partner's desk. Once students felt they knew where their partner's objects were located, they revealed the location. Students went to Art today. In Math, students rounded numbers to the nearest ten using a number line.
In Writing, students identified the difference between a storyteller's voice and a reporter's voice. Students determined that a storyteller's voice is better for narrative writing because it helps the reader create a mental movie in their mind allowing them to feel like they are a part of the story. Students went back to revise their stories to make sure they are using a storyteller's voice. In Reading, we read the book Boxes for Katje . Students answered questions while they were reading to understand the story better. We discussed how the characters in the book showed common good.

In Social Studies, students used a Venn diagram to compare and contrast rules and laws. Students created a plan with a group for how they were going to complete an assignment. They had to read a passage about a boy who broke a law. Students then had to explain the consequences for breaking the law. Students shared their current events and we had a class meeting reflecting about the week. In Math, students rounded numbers to the nearest hundred using a number line. In Reading, all of third grade got together and read wordless picture books in small groups by making inferences. Students shared their stories with other groups. In Writing, students revised their heart maps and writing resolutions. Students then worked in groups to create a list of solutions for some of the problems we said we were facing in writing. We created charts to hang in the classroom so we can refer to them when we are experiencing one of these problems.

In Science, students sorted examples and non-examples of American democratic principles. Students learned about common good, rights, and responsibilities. Students went to Music today. In Math, students rounded numbers to the nearest hundred using a 1-1000 chart. In Writing, students learned strategies to use when they do not know what to write about. I modeled how you think of a place that means a lot to you, sketch a quick map of it and list all of the memories you can think of. Then, you choose one of the memories to write about. In Reading, we re-read Crow Boy and asked questions before, during and after reading to understand the character better. Students finished presenting their wordless picture books to the class.

Class Updates Students went to P.E. In Science, students learned about our physical and emotional needs. Students created a pyramid of needs to determine how they make sure they meet each of the five levels of needs. In Math, students investigated whether the order of the addends matter when you are finding the sum. We learned because of the commutative property, the order of the addends does not matter. For example, 4+9=13 and 9+4=13. In Writing, students learned strategies to use when they do not know what to write about. I modeled how you can think of a person that means a lot to you and make a list of memories you have with that person. Then, you can choose one of the memories and write about it by explaining it bit by bit. In Reading, students viewed the image below. Students had to think to themselves what they saw and then tell a partner. Many times the partner did not see the same thing. We discussed how we sometimes have different points of view. What do you see below? Ask your child to tell you the different points of view of this image. We also read Crow Boy and made inferences to determine how the main character was feeling since the narrator did not explicitly say it. Students continued working in groups to add the words to a wordless picture book by making inferences.

Class UpdatesIn Science, students identified character traits that make someone unique. We identified character traits of leaders and group members. Students created a mind map with all of the character traits that represent themselves. Students went to Media today. In Math, students identified patterns in an addition table. Students identified odd and even numbers. We discovered that Odd+Odd=Even, Even+Even=Even, and Odd+Even=Odd. In Writing, students had a mini imaginary New Year Writing celebration. Students made their writing resolutions. We looked at sample writer's notebook entries to determine what third grade notebook writers do and don't do. In Reading, we used inferencing to read Free Fall, a wordless picture book. Students then
were assigned another wordless picture book in small groups. Groups had to work together to make inferences to determine the story of the book.

Class UpdatesIn Social Studies, we compared two maps of a kitchen that were created by a father and son. Students compared the father and son's perception of the kitchen and brainstormed reasons for why their perceptions were different. Students then each created their own map of the classroom. We went on a gallery walk to look at everyone's map. We discussed why our perceptions of the classroom were similar and different. In Math, students played the game 7 ATE 9 to practice their addition and subtraction facts. Students then used estimation and place value to solve a word problem: Seven people have a total of exactly $100. Each person has either all $1 bills or all $10 bills. Students would roll a die and would determine if the number represented the number of ones or number of tens each person had. They had to see how close to 100 they could get after rolling the die seven times. In Writing, students took a writing pre-assessment. You will get to view their pre-assessment at Back to School Night tomorrow night. In Reading, we read A Bad Case of Stripes. Students determined what the theme of the story was. They had discussions in small groups to share their ideas. We concluded that the author was trying to tell us that people should not worry about what other people think and that it is okay to be different.
Homework Me Stew: Students are to bring in three to four objects that represent themselves. They were assigned to present Thursday or Friday. Students will place their objects in a cooking pot and pull each object out explaining how they represent themselves. Read for 20 minutes

In Science, we created a KWL graphic organizer to list the things we "Know" and "Want to Know" about Science. Students viewed several pictures from everyday things in life, such as a soccer game, a hurricane and a roller coaster. Students discussed what aspects of science were in each of these images. Students learned that science is everywhere!
In Math, we started off with a warm-up. Students had to write as many ways for showing 25 as they could think of. I was so impressed how students were able to use all of the operations in order to form the number 25. We then created our very own hundreds chart. We identified the patterns we noticed. We read the book Mom and Dad are Palindromes. Palindromes are words or numbers that are the same forward and backward. We brainstormed a list of numbers that are palindromes.
We read the book Miss Nelson is Missing. After reading the book, students wrote down three class rules they thought were important to have so that our class runs smoothly. I will review these rules this evening to create our class rules. Students will sign the rules tomorrow.
We finished organizing our school supplies. Students labeled their three notebooks: Writing Journal, Math Journal and Reading Journal. Students labeled the dividers in their binder for the following subjects: Writing, Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies.
Students continued their "Me Cube". This cube tells all about them. I am excited for you to see them at Back to School Night!

Today was a very productive and fun first day of school. We went over many routines and procedures. We did many housekeeping duties such as assigning lockers and organizing our materials. We read a book called First Day Jitters about how even teachers can be nervous about the first day of school. According to our class consensogram the majority of our class was excited about the first day of school. We ended the day playing "Classmate BINGO" with all the third grade classes. Students had an opportunity to find out interesting facts about their classmates in order to fill up their entire BINGO board.
