Real Book (more commonly) or Fake Book are terms that generically refer to a

collection of musical lead sheets where the most common standards are

transcribed and reunited in order to have a foundation from where to study

and to improvise. The term "Real Book" is a play on "Fake Book”, in the sense

of “book for faking”, where "faking" refers to "an impromptu arrangement of a

song".

The same terms can also be used to refer to specific collections, in which case

it is necessary to specify: Fake Book volume 1, New Real Book 3.

In jazz culture Real Books are particularly important insomuch that they give

the musicians a base from where to play and, more importantly, to improvise:

they make up a sort of common tongue that is patrimony of the musicians and

their audience and they contain the so called “standards”, that is to say the

pieces that have become classics.

History and Characteristics

The original Real Book (Volume 1) came to light at the Berklee College of Music,

in Boston Mass., during the 1970s. It was transcribed, collated and corrected by

the students themselves in an effort to overcome the numerous defects of the

existing Fake Books (though adding some of their own, such as the pagination

and typography).

This volume was compiled by hand, without much respect for copyright laws.

For many years its circulation was illegal. The editions that followed (as well as

the many parallel collections aimed at other music genres) gradually amended

the black-market aura that had loomed over the first Real Book. The most recent

editions (by Hal Leonard and others) are completely legal.

In Hydrology

The title “Real Book” has already been used by Renzo Rosso, a Jazz aficionado,

for the set of slides for his Hydraulic Infrastructure course.

I thought it would be amusing to resume this tradition for these slides

(thousands of them!) that I have put together for numerous courses and to

document the various instruments and models that I have developed along with

my collaborators.

In Hydrology

What it is:

A collection of slides for lectures or slides that yield a systematic and organic

knowledge of a topic (even to the extent of aiding self-learning). The slides are

synthetic in the literary parts but not in certain details that are often neglected

in the textbooks.

The slides also contain information not found in “Notes on Hydrology”, for

example certain mathematical passages and comments to the formulae that,

because of their graphic structure, could not be inserted into a normal book.

In Hydrology

What it is not:

It is not a textbook, rather it is a complement to one

On the contrary:

It would hope to direct towards the reading of textbooks and original articles

(“read the masters”!) by placing them in the right context.

It represents a method to supply and communicate information on a topic.
