COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course aims to provide a basic knowledge of the theoretical and practical contents of Interaction Design, that is the design of the interaction between human / machine / network.

Objective of the course is to use strategies and methods of Human Centred Design and Ergonomics for Design, and instruments like personas and scenarios, to develop innovative product-service systems, as well as their interaction with humans and the environment.

Products and services have to be designed to improve the lifestyle of the people and their environment, through the use of smart technologies – such as ubiquitous computing, wearable computing, Internet of Things, smart objects and smart textiles - applied to ‘everyday’ objects.

ERGONOMICS: what it is?

Ergonomics or Human Factors is:

“the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of the interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theoretical principles, data and methods to design in order to optimize human well being and overall system performance. Practitioners of ergonomics, ergonomists, contribute to the planning, design and evaluation of tasks, jobs, products, organizations, environments and systems in order to make them compatible with needs, abilities and limitations of people”.

International Ergonomics Association (IEA), 2013

CONTENTS

The focus of the course is to develop a project experience of Interaction Design, from the product-service system concept through presentation, using Human Centred Design and Experience Driven design principles and the methods for Usability Evaluation.

To define an innovative and ergonomic product-service, within the development process of the project, the students will investigate:

• the use which might be made of the product-service system;• the target to which it is addressed;• the users’ needs.

STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE 1st semester 2018-2019 Lectures: 1 session/week, 2 hours/session Friday 11:00 -13:00 am – Santa Teresa Lectures will be structured in two parts:Theoretical part: it is aimed to provide the basic knowledge and methodologies of Interaction Design, User Experience, Human Centred Design, Smart Technologies;

Workshop: it is aimed at testing the knowledge acquired and at the development of a product-service interaction design project, that can provide all the technical and formal development of the final design (morphological choices, sizing, materials and components).  The activities will include lectures, exercises and workshop.Class attendance is mandatory.

TEACHING STRUCTURE

Teaching is structured in a theoretical part, aimed at studying theoretical and methodological topics of interaction design, and in a part of workshop.

The workshop is aimed at the development of the design theme. This activity will be integrated with practical exercises and assisted development of the project.

EXPECTATIONS

It is expected that each student will prepare for and attend all of the class sessions and will regularly enhance class discussions. Most important though are substantial and continuous contributions to the progress of the project.

This course provides: • some interim tests aimed at verifying the acquisition of theoretical and methodological implications treated in the lectures;• exercises developed during the course, which will be delivered in the date indicated in the lectures;• presentation of the design developed in the design workshop.

HOW TO WORK

Students will work as individuals, using research methods to assess a product-service’s existing and potential market, • apply the design research in the product development process; • establish design criteria, users and scenarios; • communicate ideation in two, three and four dimensions; • examine new applications for current or emerging digital technologies; • create a comprehensive digital presentation to demonstrate and broaden

communication skills.

To take the exam is required the delivery of classroom exercises and verification through revisions with the teacher.

Additional details for the mode of project’s presentation will be communicated to the students during the lessons.
