The Gozzi’s Turandot - in one form or another - occupied Busoni at various mes in the years 1904-1917. He was very fond of fantascal, magical tales: his immediately preceding work was the Piano Concerto, Op. 39 BV247, which included music from an unfinished adaptaon of Adam Oehlenschläger's Aladdin. In 1904 Busoni began sketching incidental music for Gozzi's Chinese fable. He also arranged a concert suite, which was first performed in 1905 and published in 1906. A producon of Gozzi’s play with Busoni's music was mounted by Max Reinhardt in Berlin in 1911, and for the second and last me in London in 1913.

This transcripon of the first movement of Busoni’s Turandot suite was created for George A. Treviño and his superb Lopez High School Band of Brownsville, Texas. The piece was premiered in February 2017 at the Texas Music Educators Associaon convenon on the occasion of the Lopez band’s 6A Honor Band performance.

Ferruccio Busoni (1 April 1866 – 27 July 1924) (given names: Ferruccio Dante Michelangiolo Benvenuto) was an Italian composer, pianist, conductor, editor, writer, and teacher. His internaonal career and reputaon meant that he met and had close relaons with many of the leading musicians, arsts and literary figures of his me (among them, a very young Percy Grainger), and he was sought-aer both as a keyboard instructor and a teacher of composion.

The son of professional musicians, Busoni was born in Empoli, just south of Florence. Inially trained by his father, he later studied at the Vienna Conservatory and then with Wilhelm Mayer and Carl Reinecke. In the ensuing years, aer brief periods teaching in Helsinki and Moscow, he devoted himself to composing, teaching, and touring as a virtuoso pianist in Europe and the United States. His wrings on music were influenal; they covered not only aesthecs but consideraons of microtones and other innovave topics. He was based in Berlin from 1894 but spent much of World War I in Switzerland.

Busoni was an outstanding (if somemes controversial) pianist from an early age. He began composing in his early years in a late romanc style, but aer 1907, when he published his Sketch of a New Esthec of Music, he developed a more individual style, oen with elements of atonality. His visits to America led to interest in North American indigenous tribal melodies which were reflected in some of his works. His composions include works for piano, including a monumental Piano Concerto, and transcripons of the works of others, notably Johann Sebasan Bach which appeared in the Bach-Busoni Edion. His other composions include chamber music, vocal and orchestral works, and also operas, one of which, Doktor Faust, was le unfinished at the me of his death. Busoni died in Berlin at the age of 58.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER

Ferruccio Busoni (1 Apr il 1866 – 27 July 1924) (given names: Ferruccio Dante Michelangiolo Benvenuto)

was an Italian composer, pianist, conductor, editor, writer, and teacher. His international career and reputation meant

that he met and had close relations with many of the leading musicians, artists and literary figures of his time (among

them, a very young Percy Grainger), and he was sought-after both as a keyboard instructor and a teacher of

composition.

Busoni was born in Empoli, just south of Florence; he was the son of professional musicians. Initially trained

by his father, he later studied at the Vienna Conservatory and then with Wilhelm Mayer and Carl Reinecke. In the

ensuing years, after brief periods teaching in Helsinki and Moscow, he devoted himself to composing, teaching, and

touring as a virtuoso pianist in Europe and the United States. His writings on music were influential; they covered not

only aesthetics but considerations of microtones and other innovative topics. He was based in Berlin from 1894 but

spent much of World War I in Switzerland.

Busoni was an outstanding (if sometimes controversial) pianist from an early age. He began composing in his

early years in a late romantic style, but after 1907, when he published his Sketch of a New Esthetic of Music, he

developed a more individual style, often with elements of atonality. His visits to America led to interest in North

American indigenous tribal melodies which were reflected in some of his works. His compositions include works for

piano, including a monumental Piano Concerto, and transcriptions of the works of others, notably Johann Sebastian

Bach which appeared in the Bach-Busoni Edition. His other compositions include chamber music, vocal and

orchestral works, and also operas, one of which, Doktor Faust, was left unfinished at the time of his death. Busoni

died in Berlin at the age of 58.
