What is an Engine? engine (ˈɛndʒɪn) [ pronunciation: en‐ juhn]
— noun Definition:
1. any machine that turns
energy into mechanical
force or motion, especially
one that gets its energy from a source of heat,
such as the burning of a
fuel: a steam engine ; a petrol engine
2. a machine that converts
energy into mechanical
force or motion.
3. an agent, means, or
instrument of
accomplishment.
The value of the engine is
based on the energy
applied on it and the work
it does, or the results
achieved.
Less Energy = More Work
is the formula for an
Efficient Engine.
A business is a Commercial
Profitable Enterprise that
WORKS with or without
the Business Owner.
A business must work. No
matter how many people
are
working
in
the
business, if it does not
work and work efficiently,
it will ultimately stop
being a business.
Cars are a very good
example of contraptions
that use engines. Cars are
no more measured by
their
ability
to
get
someone from point A to
point B. A car is now
measured by its speed, its
acceleration, its
endurance, its stability and
its reaction capacity.
A business is not really a
business just because it
employs people or
generates revenue.
Businesses
must
now
deliver, accomplish, meet
targets and exceed
expectations.
Just like a car has several
parts that are important,
so does a business have
several important aspects.
A car has tires,
windscreens, air
conditioning, a steering
wheel, etc, but the car’s
performance is measured
by its engine size, capacity,
and horsepower rating.
So also, a business has
many parts… people,
products, prices,
management,
buildings,
equipment, etc. But what
parts of a business make it
perform?

What engines in a business
must be worked on or
replaced with a better
type to make it perform
better?
Systems A business system is an
established arrangement
of components which
leads to the attainment of
particular objective
according to plan.
This system uses a
leverage of
proper
people
structure, role definitions,
measurement indicators,
concise operating
procedures, and clear
work plans. It is the
mechanism for providing
specific goods/services to
customers.
Planning
For some, planning can
become monotonous or
seem redundant.
However, in a dynamic
world, where planning
works with hindsight,
insight, oversight and
especially foresight,
continuous planning
aligned with the vision and
noting
threats
and
opportunities is critical.
After all, “Only the
Paranoid survive.” (Andy
Grove, Intel).
Branding Branding makes customers
pay habitual obedience to
signals from or about a
certain product or service.
(Leke Alder, Alder Group)
Branding, amongst other
things, creates desire,
retains
customers,
competes innovatively and
distinguishes a product or
service through
psychological commands
and instructions.
Prospecting The connection between
marketing, that which is
done
and
sales,
that
which
is expected, is prospecting,
which is usually ignored.
It is the follow up on leads
(created by marketing)
through phone calls,
resolving concerns and
fears and assurance of
value.
It is the conversion of
leads to customers and
clients.
Cashflow The cycle of the monetary
value of goods and
services sold through the
organization, out of the
organization as expenses
and back in as revenue.
It is the blood of the
business, the energy of the
business. When
compromised, it leads to
loss of life.
Other engines in a
business are Sales, Profit, and Leadership. These
parts of a business must
be examined regularly.
When adjusted properly…
Your business will
Perform!
