Kimberley’s winning design for £B20

Former pupil, Kimberley (neé Short) is celebrating having her ‘Concorde and innovation’ design selected for one of the new Bristol Pound notes. Mr Short, Kimberley’s self-proclaimed proud father, sent us these pictures and newspaper cutting showing her winning design.

Kimberley told the newspaper: “I created my illustration digitally and used a limited colour range to create a layered visualization of the landmarks of Bristol that I felt best reflected the theme of Innovation and Technology.”

Kimberley attended CHS from 1998 to 2005 and has since obtained a 2:1 BA(Hons) degree in Film and Theatre from Reading University and a 1:1 BSc(Hons) in New Media Design at UCLAN. She also got married, started a new job and moved recently so it has been a busy time for Kimberley and we send her all kinds of different congratulations at once!

Congratulations to Bethan in Y9 who recently became County Champion for Badminton, adding another title and trophy to

her growing collection. Bethan is writing us a great report about her latest superb achievements which will be on the web shortly.

Congratulations to Auden in Y4 who is currently performing a starring role in “The Lion King” at the Bristol

Hippodrome. With customary modesty, he says very little about his remarkable achievement other than, “It’s good fun”. Well done Auden!

European Day of Languages at CHS saw a creative outfit competition and a themed assembly and lunch. Pupils said

they most enjoyed “the quiz, the dance we did and seeing everyone, including teachers, in costumes”.

Nursery and Reception

As you may be aware, our Nursery class is thriving; this has necessitated increased staffing and expansion of the Nursery classroom. This is wonderful but has implications for Reception in 2013-14.

The majority of our Nursery children will be moving into Reception in September (parents of those old enough to do so have already made a financial commitment to this), so there will be a limited number of further places available.

We strongly encourage any Clifton High parents hoping to place a younger sibling in our Reception class next year to register their child as soon as possible.

We are already receiving enquiries from families new to Clifton High so early registration will help to avoid disappointment at a later date.

If you would like to register your child, please contact Mrs Melanie Johnson on 0117 933 9087 or [email protected]

2012-13 House Charities

After almost 90 suggestions were submitted for charities to support in 2012/13 and much ensuing deliberation, the Year 6 and 13 House Captains have decided to support the following charities:

Pears – Wallace and Gromit’s Children’s Foundation (raises money for sick children in hospitals and hospices throughout the UK)

Percival – Help for Heroes (provides direct, practical support to wounded, injured and sick Service personnel, veterans, and their families)

Winkworth – Bristol Sailability (enables disabled young people to participate in sailing. Former CHS pupil, Blaire Hannan relayed the Olympic torch across the Bristol Harbour in a Sailability boat.)

Wollaston – Penny Brohn Cancer Care. (Penny Brohn was a Clifton High pupil and the charity supports men and women affected by cancer at any stage of their illness, and their families and supporters.)

Author Visit: Celia Rees

Miss Denning in the Library has arranged for Celia Rees to visit CHS on Tuesday 9th October

Celia Rees is one of Britain’s foremost writers for teenagers with an international readership and reputation. Her novel Witch Child has been published in 28 languages and is required reading in many UK schools.

Celia will be talking to all senior year groups while she is here and will be signing books for anyone from 4.05pm in New Hall.

A selection of Celia Rees’ books will be on sale for £6.30 each (payable via your school bill) or pupils may bring in their own copies.

The letter with more details and a reply slip to authorise any book purchases is saved on the website.

Visit the website to read about U11 boys football making a mark at the English Schools Tournament, U18 girls hockey playing

in the Avon County Tournament and CHS swimmers taking part in the English Schools relay championship. Here is Izzy’s fantastic backstroke start!

Years 1 and 2 have been busy! Y1 have visited Weston Super Mare for their Sea and Seasides work and had a

visit from Jane Simpkins, a schools community worker from Christchurch while Y2 had a day trip to Berkeley Castle. Read more on the web!

The stage was laden with foods for the Harvest Assembly this week which was a lot of fun. Dr Neill hosted Y6 parents

for coffee and cake afterwards while pupils were packing the Foodbank South West van. Thank you for your remarkable generosity.

Bristol-Bordeaux French Exchange Scheme 2013

A reminder that applications are open now. As well as the obvious linguistic benefits, the exchange also widens horizons, encourages a cultural understanding and develops confidence as well as boosting exam performance. Pupils spend 10 days with their partner in France and then they stay for 10 days in the UK.

Dates: Bordeaux 6/7th July - 16th/17th July Bristol 20th/21st July - 30th/31st July

Applications and deposits are due by Friday 12th October. The letter with full details, costs and reply form is saved on the web.

German Christmas Markets Visit, December 2012

We are planning to take a group of pupils to Cologne and Aachen to experience the Christmas markets and visit the Cathedral and the Lindt chocolate museum. This excellent chance to practice German language is open to all of Years 7-13, but if we are oversubscribed, preference will be given to those studying German.

Dates: Sat 15th - Tues 18th December

Applications are due by Monday. The letter with full details, costs and reply form is saved on the web.

Internet Safety awareness

Mrs Roberts and Mrs Archer started the term by giving Internet Safety talks to the school community. Following a staff session and two school assemblies for different pupil age ranges, they were also on hand to deliver a presentation and answer any questions raised by senior parents at the Meet The Tutor evening.

The intention is to raise awareness regarding appropriate behaviour online and many of our pupils and parents will now feel more equipped to cope with potential problems in the online world.

Look out for future updates. If you have any questions or concerns at any time, please contact Mrs Sue Archer or Mrs Aleyna Roberts at School. Useful information and advice can also be found at www.thinkuknow.co.uk

Bulletin Board Macmillan Coffee Morning

We would like to say a huge thank you

to pupils, staff, parents and friends of

CHS who supported our Macmillan

Coffee Morning. A fantastic array of

cakes and biscuits were donated that

were obviously made with great care.

We had a super cake for auction and

even Mr Cowper and his daughter got

their chef hats on and made goodies.

After all of your hard work, we raised

an amazing £322 for Macmillan Cancer

Research. Thank you.

Please ask in the School Office for a full

size version of any of these flyers!
