General Information Child’s Information Name: Ornela Mengue (0032) Gender: Female Birthday: November 1, 2001 Arrived at HHCH: July 4th, 2014 Home Town: Yaounde Tribe: Zuitele Level of Education: Form 1 Medical History: Ornela was born with cerebral palsy which affects her walk and her speech. She can walk by herself but needs help on stairs and slopes. Ornela’s mother is still alive but has not played a role in her life as she is a prostitute. Ornela’s father is unknown. A few years back a Peace Corps volunteer found Ornela in a mental institute. Since she is not mentally handicapped, he took her out. She and a few other orphans lived with him for some time. When he returned to the United States, he hired a woman to look after Ornela and the other children. Because of her disabilities she was treated very poorly. The latrine was outside and down a hill that she could not navigate by herself. She was beaten whenever she soiled herself. Things got even worse when a “pastor” came to pray for Ornela. He announced that she was possessed and a witch. From that point on, her beatings got even more severe as she was blamed for anything that went wrong in the house. Even the neighbors were angry about the fact that there was a “witch” in the area. The last beating Ornela received was with a stick and it put her in the hospital. Her arm, back, and bottom got banged up pretty badly.That is when we first heard about her through a contact in the US Embassy. We decided to take Ornela into HHCH (even though her mother is still living) as she was in desperate need of a loving, Christ-centered home. Ornela has been warmly welcomed into the HHCH. She fits right in with the other children who make sure that she gets involved in all the things they do. Her speech has improved some what as she had speech therapy classes for the first 18 months at HHCH. We praise the Lord that in the summer of ‘16, Ornela gave her life to Christ and decided to forgive those that had treated her so very badly. She is a sweet, happy girl.
