Children in Need: Pyjamas, Sponsored Silence and Dodgeball!

On Friday 16th November, everybody had a comfortable day at School wearing their pyjamas and slippers to support Children in Need. As well as making a donation to be able to wear pyjamas for the day, pupils and staff took part in various activities to raise even more money for this huge national charity day including a Tuck Sale, Beat the Goalie and even Lauren Barber’s very lucrative sponsored silence! But the major highlight of the day had to be the staff vs senior pupils Dodgeball match at lunchtime on our new MUGA games courts. With the rest of the School cheering on from the sidelines, two teams of pupils took their turn to take on the staff. Much noise, running about, ball throwing, somewhat questionable interpretation of the rules, Dr Neill’s intervention on the pupils’ side to support one lone student player against all the staff by herself and a lot of fun later, the teachers’ team emerged victorious by the narrowest of margins.

A great spirit-lifter for a dull autumn day and all for a great cause too. We’re pleased to report that CHS raised £575.47 for Children in Need. Who’s in for helping Pudsey next year?!

online about

recent senior

sport - girls

performed

well at the

Avon netball tournament and the

boys’ rugby drew at Cathedral.

Plus county hockey trials are

underway with lots of our girls

doing well. Full round up soon!

A group of Y12

students led a

session on 26th

October (Mufti

Day!) as part of

the Leadership

Award Program they have

developed. The younger pupils

participated in debates with great

enthusiasm and consideration.

Year 4 have been

learning about

skeletons over

the past two

weeks and were

introduced to

“Bob” who came out of retirement to

help in the lessons like a true

professional!

French in Year 1

We will be introducing a programme

of French into Year 1 at the start of

next term. This will be an exciting

introduction to languages and will be

coordinated by Mrs Sutcliffe whose

enthusiasm will no doubt inspire the

children. It is our intention that this

initiative will instil in the children an

appreciation of other languages and

cultures that will last a lifetime.

Vive le Francais!

LTA Mini-Red Tennis for Reception and Year 1 children

Mr Richard Conway, our tennis

coach, is going to run ‘mini-red’

tennis lessons for children in

Reception and Year 1 for the first

time. These sessions will take place

in the gymnasium on Monday and

Tuesday from 8.00a.m. to 8.40a.m.

Details of charges and kit

requirement will be given in the

clubs letter that will be sent out in

the near future.

Twinning News CHS is delighted to have been

mentioned twice in the Winter 2012

edition of ‘Twinning News’ a

publication from the Bristol

International Twinnings Association.

Our links with Dongfeng Donglu

primary in Guangzhou, China and the

First of May preschool in Beira,

Mozambique were both noted:

“Children and parents from Clifton

High School’s counterpart the

Dongfeng Donglu Primary in

Guangzhou were in Bristol recently as

promised ... They brought a TV crew

with them to make a prime time

documentary about the trip and the

also managed a coaching session at

Bristol City FC ...”

“... central library was the setting for

the Bristol Link with Beira (BLB) to

launch their book “Sun, Sea and

Solidarity- 21 years of twinning with

Beira” written by Susie Weldon and

sponsored by UWE. Special guest was

Ilda Raivoso …. Clifton High School’s

choir sang songs of welcome and

celebration to reflect their links with

the First of May preschool in Beira…..”

Year 2 have had

an exciting and

busy time. They

enjoyed an ‘Art

Attack’ visit to

Tyntesfield where

they designed their own ‘Hunkypunk’

and also celebrated a medieval feast

back at School to round off their

“Castles” topic. There was singing and

dancing and even a ‘bird pie’!

Congratulations

to Jim, Katie,

Nikki and Zak of

Y12 who

achieved a

splendid sixth

place out of twenty in the recent

Senior Team Mathematics Challenge

at UWE. Eighty young people

wrestled with some difficult problems

at this enjoyable event.

The Y12 Spanish

class recently

participated in

language debates

at Clifton College,

doing a fantastic

job of arguing against a difficult

motion and further developed their

skills at a University of Bristol lecture

(entirely in Spanish!)

Food Technology

equipment amnesty Please make sure that any pupils

who have borrowed equipment

from the Food Technology room to

take their finished food products

home return everything to

Mr Goldsmith by the end of this

week. Please be aware that any

unreturned items will be charged for

via the end of term bills. Thank you!

Charity Fundraising

The Parents’ Association are pleased

to announce that we raised £345

through sales of wrapping paper

from Northbrook this term - thank

you to everybody who contributed

by buying some!
