Galicia and Life Sciences go hand in hand, contributing to the development of biotechnology in the region. In 2010, several companies and institutional agents in the biotechnology sector joined to start a new path full of common interests to collaborate and support Life Sciences in Galicia. And we moved forward down that path with the creation of Bioga, Life Sciences Technological and Business Cluster.

Bioga unites leading companies, hospital foundations, research groups, and public bodies in all areas of biotechnology within an emerging sector, which increasingly has more potential and where the corporate network is growing, thus generating more biotechnology innovation.

All agents seek to satisfy their own needs through the available resources, and that is what we focus on at Bioga: think and act together. Therefore, over the years, we have worked to make the sector more dynamic and break the barriers that were limiting us. We have intensified the relationship between businesses and research organizations integrated into universities and the Galician Health Network, increasing alliances, and purposes.

Two qualities characterize BIOGA: Differentiation and Eagerness. • Differentiation, because biotechnology, being an innovative

sector, has its peculiarities, and to reach different purposes, we must think and act differently. This singularity has led us to see the cluster as a biocompany from the point of view of talent, initiative development, and funding.

• Eagerness, because we are aware that we represent a young and budding business network, but with all the ability and energy to grow and establish itself as one of the strategic sectors of Galicia. We are fighters and do not easily admit "it is not possible" for an answer, as we can work and build a better future for our region and our companies, which made us what we are today.

In the next period, we are committed to strengthening the internationalization of companies, vocation to open new markets in third countries, and intensive activity in R&D. This comes from the collective effort of all of Bioga's partners and collaborators, to whom I express my gratitude, especially to those who collaborate actively in every activity that is organized and bring in new ideas, to make each action fruitful for all.

Health

ACIS is a Galician public agency created to become the cohesive element of the health knowledge and innovation ecosystem in Galicia. The advance of knowledge is fast-paced, so it is essential to have the necessary resources to manage it autonomously, in an agile and efficient way, results-oriented and with a vision capable of combining immediate needs with medium and long term planning.

ACIS is the Galician Public Health System instrument used to optimally diffuse knowledge since the time it emerges until it is transferred to society. To achieve this, ACIS includes the following in the same value chain: training for healthcare professionals, health research, innovation from an open approach, and the ability to assess technologies to ensure that the most innovative ones are applied.

BIOREPOS introduces in the market a comprehensive package of specialized services related to the custody and management of biological samples at low temperature.

In this regard, BIOREPOS has developed a strategic network of bio-repositories specifically designed for the optimal conservation and custody of biological collections based on the highest security, traceability, and applicable quality standards.

The launch of the network begun with the creation of the first facilities in two strategic locations of the Iberian Peninsula: the bio-repository of Santiago de Compostela (Galicia), and the bio-repository of Rivas-Vaciamadrid (Community of Madrid). These two new infrastructures are complementing the already existing bio-repository in Hernani (Basque Country), which works at the north-central area of the peninsula. These facilities can preserve more than 13.5 million biological samples from human, vegetable, or animal origin, at refrigeration, freezing, ultra-freezing, and cryogenic temperatures.

Celtalga Extract is a spin-off company from the University of Santiago de Compostela, whose activity focuses on the production of aqueous extracts from Galician coast seaweeds.

The extraction process is ultrasound-assisted using water as a solvent, thus being an ecologic process. Both extracts and processes are patented by the University of Santiago de Compostela.

Sálvora is a new trademark of natural and organic cosmetics that involves the innovative ingredients developed by Celtalga.

We want the beneficial properties of seaweeds being transferred to society through innovative skincare products. Laboratory tests, both chemical and in vitro enzymatic, have demonstrated the radical scavenging activity, the inhibition of protein glycation, and the inhibition of enzymes elastase, hyaluronidase and collagenase, which contribute to skin aging.

CIFGA is a chemical-pharmaceutical company devoted to developing standards and reference materials for the Agrifood sector, now expanded to Textile and Cosmetic Sectors with standards of compounds such as dyes, additives or fragrances.

The IISGS constitutes a space for multidisciplinary research in Biomedicine, based in the Álvaro Cunqueiro Hospital in Vigo, which brings together the clinical research groups from the Health Areas in the South of Galicia (Vigo, Ourense and Pontevedra) and the biotech groups of the University of Vigo.

Its primary objective is to promote translational research and innovation, and thus ensure the effective application of research results in order to improve the health of citizens.
