UW-Stevens Point has now won seven of the 13 tournament’s championships, the most of any WIAC team. It has also won three of the last five WIAC Championships.

Road WarriorsThis season, the Pointers have uncharacteristiclly struggled with a 2-3 record on the road and are 1-0 at neutral sites. The Pointers’ last game without a three came against UW-La Crosse where they were 0-for-7 in a 73-50 defeat in La Crosse.

Over the past six seasons, the 2010 NABC and D3hoops.com Coach of the Year, Bob Semling, has directed one of the premier programs in Division III, guiding the Pointers to their third national title in seven seasons with a 78-73 victory over Williams College in 2010.

Semling has posted a 145-33 record in his first six seasons at the helm for UW-Stevens Point and has won three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and four tournament titles. This summer Semling was also named as one of the nation’s top 25 non-Division I coaches according to collegeinsider.com’s Jason Belzer.

the country at 79.2 percent in 2005-06. UW-Stevens Point was the only schools among 1,187 NCAA and NAIA programs to shoot better than 80.1 percent at the free-throw line. The Pointers also averaged just 10.2 turnovers per game in 2007-08 (third in the nation) and committed just 8.5 turnovers per game the previous season. The Pointers also had a NCAA Division III best 1.54 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Having served as an assistant coach with the Pointers’ back-to-back NCAA Division III championship teams in 2003-04 and 2004-05, Semling took over the reins in 2005-06 from Jack Bennett and guided a relatively fresh group of players back near the top of the WIAC standings with a third-place league finish and 17-10 overall record.

Semling is actually in his second stint with the Pointers’ coaching staff, sandwiching both tenures around eight years at the Division I level. Semling was an assistant coach at UW-Stevens Point under Bob Parker from 1988-95 as the Pointers posted a 127-63 record, including a 27-2 mark in 1991-92. During Semling’s first tenure at UW-Stevens Point, the Pointers won two conference championships and made two NAIA national tournament appearances.

He then spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at UW-Green Bay and one year as the Director of Basketball Operations at New Mexico before returning to UW-Stevens Point for the 2003-04 season. While at UW-Green Bay, Semling helped the Phoenix to a Mid-Continent Conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance in his first season.

A Merrill native, Semling was a three-year starter at quarterback at UW-Eau Claire from 1977-79. As a student at UWEC, he assisted with Ken Anderson and the men’s basketball team, making NAIA Final Four appearances in each of his final two seasons.

Semling then spent one season as an assistant at Park Falls High School and assisted former Pointers’ coach Jack Bennett for two seasons at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School, reaching the state tournament with both schools. Semling was the head coach at Wausau West High School for three seasons from 1985-88, winning back-to-back regional championships in his final two seasons prior to coming to UW-Stevens Point.

He and his wife, Kathy, have three children, Jenna, Kreg and Lauryn.

Record at UWSP

Coach Semling has twice been named the WIAC Coach of the Year, most recently following 2008-09 campaign. In 2010, Semling earned National Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Pointers to a 29-4 finish. The Pointers have appeared in the top 10 of the D3hoops.com poll 36 straight times and have been in the top 25 for 75 straight polls. The Pointers ranked in the top five 10 of the 14 polls conducted in 2009-10.

Along with the 145-33 record, the Pointers have achieved some amazing statistical feats, leading NCAA Division III in both free-throw percentage and fewest turnovers per game in two of Semling’s first three seasons. UW-Stevens Point set an NCAA Division III record in 2006-07 by shoot ing 82.3 percent after leading

Head Coach Eddie AndristOverall Record: 397-320/147-149 at UW-StoutSeasons: 23rd/12th at UW-StoutAccomplishments: Andrist is in his 12th season as head coach for the Blue Devils. During the 2005-06 season, Stout found itself nationally ranked, in first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) deep into the conference race, playing in the conference title game and advancing to the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time and racking up the program’s most victories (22) since the 1968-69 season.

During the 2009-10 season, the Blue Devils found themselves back in the upper echelon of the deep WIAC. In back-to-back games, Stout knocked off two top five nationally-ranked teams - UW-Whitewater and and eventual national champion UW-Stevens Point and again was garnering national attention. Stout advanced to the second round of the WIAC playoffs and finished the season ranked 12th in the final Massey Power ratings.

One of the real success stories for Andrist and his staff during the past five seasons with the Blue Devils has been the return of Blue Devil fans to Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout finished 138th in national attendance prior to Andrist’s arrival.
