Conrad came from “Lauterbach im Redeselchen”, now Lauterbach in the present German State of Hessen. He served in the army of the Duke of Brunswick. The contingent sent to America was commanded by Major General Friedrich Adolf von Riedesel (pronounced Ree-day-zel). The first division, including the Dragoon Regiment Prince Ludwig in which Conrad served, marched from Brunswick to Stade near the mouth of the Elbe, from February 22 to March 8, 1776. They made

(Eychaner Ancestors page 6

the hazardous ocean voyage from Stade via Plymouth to Quebec from March 19 to June 1.

At the end of May, 1777, the British-German army, nearly half consisting of Brunswickers, began its offensive, moving from Canada toward Albany, New York, under the supreme command of General Burgoyne. The campaign was an almost total disaster. The British and German troops had no idea of how to fight successfully in a heavily wooded wilderness area. The problems of transporting food and supplies long distances overland were insuperable. Much of the time they could not see the American foe due to the forests. Burgoyne finally surrendered to the Americans on October 16, 1777, and his troops became prisoners. Of the total of 5,700 Brunswick troops who went to America, about 1,000 voluntarily remained in America after their discharge.

Georg and Maria Elizabeth Hausmann were the child’s sponsors. The baptism probably took place in the old stone church of the Protestant Dutch Reformed Church of German Flatts.

In early records, Conrad’s surname was spelled differently almost every time it occurred (see Part 1 for all the variant spellings). War of 1812 In the War of 1812 against Great Britain, Conrad and his brother Jacob enlisted as privates in Captain Jost Bell’s Company of the 27th Regiment (Shoemakers) of the New York Militia. They fought in the Battle of Sackets Harbor. Sackets Harbor is located on Lake Ontario in New York. It was a center of American naval and military activity. Control of shipping on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River was vital to military victory, for these waterways were the primary transportation corridor. Roads, where they existed at all, were little more than muddy slashes through the virgin forests. A British-Canadian force launched a surprise attack on Sackets Harbor on May 29, 1813. At that time, the majority of the American forces were across Lake Ontario attacking Fort George. At 1 a.m. on a dark, rainy morning, the invaders landed just off shore on Horse Island, and waded across the causeway. In the resulting fierce battle the invaders appeared at first to have the upper hand, but the Americans did not give up. Late in the day, the British commander concluded that a victory could not be gained before nightfall, and that his troops would not be able to hold their ground overnight. He ordered a retreat,

(Eychaner Ancestors page 12

and the battle was over. The Americans lost about 160 men, and the British lost about 260.

The War of 1812 is perhaps best remembered for the occasion when Francis Scott Key wrote our National Anthem “The Star Spangled Banner” during the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland.

Marriage and moving west In 1818 Conrad married Catherine Boody, the daughter of Nicholas and Margaret Boody. Catherine was born December 1, 1801, in the town of Minden, Montgomery County, NY. She was baptized March 2, 1802. Minden was a short distance down the Mohawk River from German Flatts where Conrad lived. In 1817 the part of Minden where the Boody’s lived was renamed Danube, and became part of Herkimer County, the same county in which German Flatts is located.

About the same time that Conrad and Catherine were married, her father bought 153 acres of land in the town of Steuben, Oneida County, New York. Steuben is in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, about 30 miles north of German Flatts. It is a reasonable guess that Conrad and Catherine moved to Steuben at the same time as the Boodys. We don’t know if they were married before or after moving.

Some of Conrad’s siblings also moved to Oneida County during this period. Brother John and sisters Elisabeth Castler and Hannah Nash lived in the town of Steuben, while brother Jacob lived in Western, the next town to the west.

Conrad initially lived near the Boodys, possibly on their land. His first recorded land purchase was not until November 4, 1838, when he bought 25 acres in the Steuben Patent in the town of Steuben. Conrad sold this land on April 22, 1843.

In September of 1843 the family moved to Ogle County, Illinois. They probably made the journey via the Erie Canal to Buffalo and then over three of the Great Lakes. The Erie Canal passed near their homes, and was a popular migration route at the time. In Ogle County, Conrad purchased 79 acres of government land about four miles east of the village of Oregon, Illinois. There he established his farm. In 1857, he sold one half acre of this land to the County for construction of the Limerick schoolhouse.

Last years Conrad’s wife Catherine died February 13, 1847, at the age of 45. She was buried at Stinsonian Cemetery at Paynes Point, about one mile east of his farm.

Conrad married his second wife Esther Barlow in Ogle County on December 1, 1851. She was born April 7, 1800. Esther was the widow of a Mr. Hitchcock, by whom she had a daughter Esther who married Allen Eychaner, one of Conrad’s sons by his first marriage.

(Eychaner Ancestors page 13

Conrad died December 23, 1866, at age 74 and was buried beside his first wife. His second wife Esther died less than a month later, on January 11, 1867, at age 66. She was also buried beside Conrad.

Children of Conrad and Catherine Eychaner

Alice Carpenter made this record of the children of Conrad and Catherine Eychaner. It was written in her copy of Pierce’s Memorandum Account Book, the World Dispensary Medical Association, 1895, collection of the late Lois Cline. The notebook was a giveaway, advertising Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery, and Dr. Pierce’s Pleasant Pellets. Alice was the granddaughter of Margaret and Nicholas Andrew.

Children of Conrad and Catherine Eychaner: 1. Nancy Eychaner was born Jul 31, 1820, probably in Oneida Co., NY. By 1860 she

was married to Jacob Williams and lived in Ogle Co, IL. They were still there in 1880. Nothing more is known.

2. Margaret Ann Eychaner was born May 21, 1824 in Oneida Co., NY. She died at age 85 on Jan 10, 1910, in Chana, Ogle Co., IL, and is buried in Stinsonian Cemetery, Paynes Point, Ogle Co. She was married Dec 15, 1841, to Nicholas Andrew, son of John and Anna/Nancy (Nash) Andrew. Nicholas was born in the town of Le Ray, Jefferson Co, NY, on Feb 22, 1818 per the record of his christening, or one day earlier per his gravestone. He died Aug 2, 1856, at Paynes Point, Ogle Co, and was buried in Stinsonian Cemetery. After Nicholas’ death, Margaret married neighbor William “Billy” Rae (later spelled Ray) on Apr 11, 1857, but the marriage was unfortunate and they separated after two years. Nicholas and Margaret came to Ogle Co., IL, the year after they were married. The first winter in Ogle Co. they lived with Mrs. John Campbell whose husband, the year before, had been called to his door in the middle of the night and shot to death by the

(Eychaner Ancestors page 14

Driscoll gang of bandits. Nicholas built a log cabin home at Paynes Point, in Pine Rock Township, Ogle Co. Nicholas was a farmer. He eventually acquired a full section of land. Nicholas died at the age of 38 when he was kicked in the chest by a horse. This left his widow Margaret to raise their five young children alone. As a local newspaper wrote: “The mother was of that type of rugged pioneer who faced the future with a brave heart and carried on in spite of misfortunes.” She raised the children by herself, and continued farming with the children’s help. There were five children by Nicholas Andrew, all born and died in Ogle Co, IL Another may have died in infancy.

a. Daniel Andrew, b. Jul 28, 1845; d. Jan 4, 1898; m. Jan 22, 1880 Mary Cornelia Slagle who was b. 1847.

She is buried there in Maple Grove Cemetery. William Riley Eychaner is the subject of Chapter 2.

7. Lucinda Eychaner was born Jun 12, 1836, in NY. She married John Reintz Nov 17, 1851, in Ogle Co, IL. Nothing else is known.

8. Sarah Eychaner was born Jul 5, 1840 in NY. She died at age 86 on Jan 1927, in Glendale, CA. Married Jul 2, 1857, in Oregon, Ogle Co, IL to Almon Carr who was born Sep 8, 1831, near Albany, NY, and died at age 70 in Mar 1902 in Wessington, SD. At the age of 7 Almon with his father, mother and sister Sarah moved to Oregon, IL, traveling via the Erie Canal and Great Lakes. Almon grew up in Oregon, IL. About 1868 he moved to Storey Co., IA. Almon taught the school that his children attended there. In the spring of 1883, the family moved to St. Lawrence, SD. They had seven children.

SourcesConrad and Catherine Birth of Conrad: Birth data from Royden Vosburgh, Records of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of German Flatts in Fort Herkimer, Vol. 1, New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, NY, 1918, p. 163, FHL film 17464. Same data in Arthur C. M. Kelly, Baptismal Record of German Flatts Reformed Church (Fort Herkimer Reformed Church), Kinship, Rhinebeck, NY, 1983, p. 94, #2137. War of 1812: Conrad’s son A. J. Eychaner wrote that his father “served in the war with Canada and was in the Battle of Sackets Harbor under General Brown—Captain Bell” in a letter to Lula Eychaner dated Aug 12, 1911 (Collection of Ray Eychaner). There are only two surviving documents for Conrad in the National Archives compiled service records: 1) Muster roll dated Nov 11, 1814, Sackets Harbor, for the period Oct 5 to Nov,

11, 1814. 2) The payroll for Oct 7 to Nov 18, 1914. In both cases the unit was Capt. Jost Bell’s Co., 27 (Shoemaker’s) Reg’t New York Militia. There was no record for Conrad in the New York State Archives. The absence of a record for the date of the Battle of Sackets Harbor does not disprove his service in this battle because the surviving records are not complete. (((The U.S. National Archives has similar records for a Jacob Eikenauer. Conrad is known from the German Flatts church records to have had a brother Jacob. My account of the Battle of Sackets Harbor is based on John R. Elting, Amateurs to Arms!, Algonquin Books, 1991, and John K. Mahon, The War of 1812, University of Florida Press, 1972. Marriage: The year of marriage is from the letter from Conrad’s granddaughter Pauline Prime to Lula Eychaner, Aug 24, 1932, which

(Eychaner Ancestors page 16

states “They were married in 1818—he was 26 and she 16. Catherine Boody was her name, and her mother was a Spanish lady.” Pauline got this information from her father A.J. Eychaner. Catherine Boody’s birth date and parents: Her birth record, and those of some of her siblings, are found in the baptismal records of St. Paul’s Lutheran (the Geisenburg) Church, town of Minden, Montgomery Co., NY. An accurate typescript copy of the original record is given in Royden Vosburgh, Records of the Lutheran St. Paul’s Church in the Town of Minden, New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, 1914, available as FHL film 534218. An index was prepared in 1941 by the Montgomery Co. Dept. of History and Archives, FHL film 982388. The data for the Boody family is given below. The record is in German; the spelling of the names is verbatim. • p. 6, #64, Nicholas, born Aug 28, 1794, bapt.

Catherine’s date of birth of Dec 1, 1801, is consistent with the data on her age at marriage, and age at death. Spelling of Boody: In the baptismal record for Catherine Boody the surname was spelled Poty. The churchbook entries were in German. There was no standardized way to

spell German names at the time, and this resulted in many different ways to spell the same name. The substitution of p for b as the initial letter of Boody, has a simple explanation. According to Dr. Roger P. Minert, Spelling Variations in German Names, GRT Publications, 2000, Section 4.7.1, consonants formed in the same place in the mouth (“point of articulation”) could be interchanged. Thus p can appear in place of b. He gives the example of Beine and Peine as variant spellings of the same name. He also mentions that t can be substituted for d. Moving to Stueben, Oneida Co.: On Apr 9, 1818, Nicholas Boody of the town of Danube, Herkimer Co, NY, purchased for $753 from Martha Tillinghast lot 6 in Machins Patent, Steuben, Oneida Co., NY (Oneida Co. Deeds 47:450). Conrad’s brother John’s son John was born in Steuben in 1818. (1878 History of Ogle Co., p. 801) In 1820 Conrad was not found anywhere in the census, but Conrad’s brother Jacob, and sister Elizabeth Castler, were living in Steuben, Oneida Co. (1820 Census). Conrad’s son Allen was born in Oneida Co. in 1829, as shown in the section on Conrad’s children. In 1830 Conrad’s sister Hannah (who married John Nash) moved to Steuben, Oneida Co. (1935 typescript by Harry D. Nash titled Genealogical and Historical Matter of the Descendants of Francis Nash, collection of Lois Cline. In the census of 1830, Conrad is living in the town of Steuben, Oneida Co., NY (p. 257), near his in-laws, the Boodys. His brother Jacob still lived in Steuben (p. 258) while brother Benjamin lived one town to the west in Western (p. 328).((Purchase of land in Oneida Co.: Oneida Co. deeds 89:248. On Nov 24, 1838, Nathan Garnsey of the town of Clifton Park, Saratoga Co., NY, sold for $137.50 to Conrad Eycanor [sic] of the town of Steuben, Oneida Co., NY, 25 acres of land in lot 29, Steuben patent. Recorded Jan 10, 1839. Sale of land in Oneida Co.: Oneida Co. deeds 111:188. On Apr 22, 1843, Conrad Eycanaur [sic] and Catharine his wife, of the town of Steuben in Oneida Co., NY, sold for $200 to John O. Jones of the same town, 25

acres of land in lot 29, Steuben patent. Recorded May 5, 1843. Moving to Ogle Co., IL: The date of moving is from the diary of Conrad’s son Rev. A. J. Eychaner. The diary was in the possession of his widow Anna in 1940-43 when it was abstracted by Terry Ferrell, who was seeking information on A. J.’s role in the history of the Church of God in Iowa. I obtained a copy of the abstract from Lois Cline. The date was probably recorded circa 1860. Conrad’s land patents dated Jul 1, 1845 are for the east 1/2 of fractions 3 and 4, NE 1/4 of section 5, township 23, Range 11 east, containing 79.2 acres total. (US to Conrad Eycanner [sic], Jul 1, 1845; BLM on-line facsimile). Method of travel to Ogle Co.: At the time, a popular route of migration from NY to the Middle West was via the Erie Canal, and then by steamer over the Great Lakes. The use of the Erie Canal would have been particularly convenient for the Eychaners, for it passed through the county in which they lived. Daughter Margaret Andrew and her husband moved to Ogle Co. about 1 year earlier. One of Margaret’s obituaries states that in 1942 they made the “journey by boat over three of the Great Lakes from New York State to Chicago” (From a copy of a newspaper clipping pasted into the family Bible of Margaret’s son George, in the collection of Lois Cline). Almon Carr (who married Sarah Eychaner) traveled to Ogle Co. with his parents in 1837 via the Erie Canal and Great Lakes, according to Arthur A. Carr, The Carr Book, NY, 1947, p. 308. Gravestone inscriptions:(The inscriptions are as follows: JOHN C. EYCHANER ESTER CATHERINE S. DIED WIFE OF Wife Dec 23, 1866 J. C. EYCHANER C. Eychaner Aged DIED DIED 74 yr, 2 mo, 28 d JAN 11, 1867 FEB 13, 1847 Aged AE 45 yrs 66 yr, 9 mo, 4 d

The cemetery data was compiled from the inscriptions in 1986 by Harriet Miller Fletcher, of the Ogle Co. Genealogical Society. The inscriptions were photographed in 2001 by Sharon Ogle. I have combined the two sources of information to obtain the verbatim inscriptions given above. At the

present time, the graves are posted on Findagrave.com. Death of Catherine: From her gravestone inscription. Conrad’s death: The Illinois State Historical Library searched for an obituary for Conrad and found only the following: “Died—At his residence near Paynes point Dec. 23, 1866, of dropsy of the heart, J. C. Eychaner, in the 75th year of his age” published in the Oregon [Illinois] National Guard, Jan 8, 1867, p. 3, col. 2. The date of death agrees with the gravestone inscription. Esther Barlow: Her birth date is calculated from her age at death. Her marriage to Conrad is from Ogle Co. Marriage Book B, p. 109: “Conrad Eychnaner to Ester Barlow, Dec 1, 1851.” Alice Carpenter made the following entry in a small notebook printed in 1895, described in the text in the section “Children”. It reads:!

:&A*(CA9$,&(W"9#$#/#6(G%&&",'(E/$-(3/-&%'(C.#$%-,&( D/&( %( A,#/-'( $HAT%-'*( ( [$,( $%'(9I/( #$"5'&,-( T.( $,&( D"&A9( G%&&"%L,M( CA9$,&(I$/( G%&&",'( 455,-( C.#$%-,&( $,&( A9,BQT&/9$,&0( %-'( nnnnn( W"9#$#/#6( I$/( T,#%G,(9$,( D%9$,&(/D( ( E,--.(%-'(3$%&5,A(W"9#$#/#6*((E,--",( G%&&",'( 35%&6( ^,99"A*( ( E,--",iA(G/9$,&(I%A(E,G"G%(W"9#$#/#6*(

Because Esther’s son by her first marriage had the surname Hitchcock, we know that Barlow is Esther’s maiden name, and not the surname of her first husband. In addition, the marriage record for her daughter (who married Conrad’s son Allen) also makes it clear that the daughter’s surname was Hitchcock. Census records for Conrad: 1850 IL, Ogle Co, Eagle Twp., family of “Coonrad Eychaner” [sic]. 1860 IL, Ogle Co, Oregon Twp, Family of “Conrd Ikenes” [sic]. The census handwriting is poor.

Nancy Eychanner, born Jul 31, 1820, NY, father Conrad Eychaner, mother Catherine Boody

In the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census for Ogle Co, IL, we find a family consisting of Jacob and Nancy Williams. The handwriting on the census page borders on illegible. No cemetery record was found.

2. Margaret Ann: Margaret’s birth, death and marriage are from three obituaries: 1) Copy of a clipping pasted into the family Bible of her son George, collection of Lois Cline. 2) Obituary, probably from the Restitution Herald, collection of Lois Cline. 3) Obituary from the Ogle County Republican, Jan 13,

1910, p. 1. The birth and death dates are also on her gravestone, Stinsonian Cemetery. The marriage to Rae is from the Ogle Co. marriage records. The obituary from the Ogle Co. Republican gives a marriage date of Dec 1, 1842, but this is assumed to be wrong because it disagrees with the other two obituaries, as well as notes made by Alice Carpenter in an old scrapbook belonging to her mother Mary Cornelia Andrew, Margaret’s daughter-in-law. (Collection of Lois Cline) Husband Nicholas’ birth record is given in Baptismal Record of German Flatts Reformed Church, Arthur C. M. Kelley, Kinship, NY, 1983, entry #2991. It states in Latin that Joannis Andree [John Andrew] and Anna Nash had a son Nicholas Andree [Andrew], b Feb 22, 1818, bapt. Aug 6, 1820, sponsors Conrad and Margaretha Hess.( (Nicholas’ birth and death dates are given in his in his obituary— a copy was pasted into the family Bible of his son George, collection of Lois Cline. The birth and death dates are also on his gravestone in the Stinsonian Cemetery. Biographical details for Margaret and Nicholas were assembled from the obituary of son George in the Ogle Co. Democrat, the obituaries of Margaret and Nicholas Andrew, and an account written by granddaughter Alice Carpenter. All of these were in the collection of the late Lois Cline. Minor details vary with the account, but they basically agree. The quote is from the obituary of son George in the Ogle Co. Republican. Album p. 645. SEVENTH CHILD: The family tradition is that there was a seventh child who died in infancy. Beside the headstones of Nicholas and Margaret, here is a very small marker bearing the inscription “baby.” 3. Timothy: Date of birth from IGI, which does not give a source. Date of death from Mt. Pleasant Cemetery record. Age 25 at death is consistent with the birth date in the IGI. Marriage data from IL State marriage records. George Eychaner, the minor who was one of the heirs of Conrad Eychaner’s estate, is assumed to be the son of Timothy who was the only child to predecease Conrad. 4. Allen: A biographical sketch appears in the History of Ogle Co, IL, Chicago, Kett & Co., 1878, p. 854. It gives the date of birth, parents’ names, date of marriage, and the name and date of birth of their only child. Date of death from Mt. Pleasant Cemetery record, which gives his age as 74. This is consistent with the birth date in his bio, and with age 21 in the 1850 census. The IGI gives Jul 2, 1828 for birth, 1 year earlier. Marriage data from Ogle Co. Marriage Register C, p. 4, entry 916, FHL 1420755. Dates of Esther are from the cemetery record. Her birth date was calculated from her age at death of 76 yr, 5 mo, 11 da. 5. Henry: Dates of Henry and Julia from gravestone inscriptions at Findagrave Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Paynes Pt., Ogle Co, IL. : “Henry d. Apr 20, 1891, age 59 yr, 10 mo, 10 da; Julia wf. d Apr 29, 1885, age 41 y, 8 m, 9 d.” When accessed in March 2016, Findarave gave a birth date for Henry that did not agree with the inscription (which was quite legible). We used the data in the inscription for both Henry and Julia and calculated the date of birth from age at death. The 1850 census gives Henry’s age as 18, which is the age

expected. Marriage data from Ogle Co. marriage records. All of the data on the children is from Sharon Ogle who is a descendant of Henry. 6. William Riley: Sources and much additional detail are given Chapter 2 of The Eychaners of Jasper County Iowa, online at the Jasper County Iowa Genweb. Lucinda: Birth date from IGI (source unknown). The date is consistent with the 1850 census entry: “Lucinda, 15, born NY.” Married name from the previously discussed Commissioner’s deed. Marriage date from Ogle Co. marriage records. 8. Sarah: The data is from Arthur A. Carr, The Carr Book, NY, 1947, p. 308. An earlier work is Edson Carr, Carr Family Records, IL, 1894, pp. 345-6. The Carr Book gives Jul 5, 1840 for Sarah’s birth date, while Carr Family Records gives Jun 5, 1840. The 1850 census for the family of Conrad Eychaner, taken in December lists “Sarah, 7, born NY” from which a year of birth of about 1843 would be calculated. 9. Andrew J.: Sources and much additional detail are given in my document A Short Biography of Rev. Andrew James Eychaner. At this writing, it is not online, but a PDF copy will be sent on request. Appendix: Sale of Conrad’s land Deeds: 1) Ogle Co. Deeds 45:141-143, Robert C.
