2 Private Schools SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO THE GAZETTE FEBRUARY 3, 2011

“It breaks my heart when I get calls fromparents who have missed our deadline,” saysPatricia Garber, director of admissions at Bish-op McNamara High School in Forestville. “It’simportant that parents begin their search wellin advance of our December deadline.”

Make sure the school is right foryour child

“Parents need to begin by educating them-selves about the types of schools available andconsidering what they want in terms of an ed-ucation for their child,” says Esther Donawa, head of school at Oxon Hill’s The MarylandInternational Day School, a Spanish immer-sion school. “Then they need to put their egoaside and be very honest with themselves interms of how their child will fit in a particulareducational environment.”

Fit is important, agrees Garber. “Just likecolleges and universities have different person-alities, so too do the various schools within theArchdiocese of Washington,” she says. “This isa big financial commitment for the parents anda major investment for the student, so it’s im-portant to be sure that his or her needs and in-terests can be met. Not every school is right forevery child.”

For those considering a Catholic highschool, the archdiocese website (www.adw.org)offers school profiles and links, as well as infor-mation about its spring high school fair. “Thefair is geared toward students not currently at-tending a Catholic elementary school,” saysGarber. “It’s a great way for them to start learn-ing about us in their 7th-grade year.”

The best way to get a feel for a school is forboth parents and students to visit. “We haveopen houses about twice a month from Sep-tember to February. Parents come and sit in

on classes on Spanish days as well as Englishdays,” says Donawa. “We don’t take an appli-cation unless a parent has done this.”

Virtually all schools hold open houses andstrongly encourage parents to attend. Depend-ing on the school, the open house may or maynot welcome students. Schools generally postopen house dates—which begin in the mid- tolate fall and at some schools continue into thewinter—on their websites.

At many schools, students aregiven the opportunity to take atest drive. “We call it ‘Mustangfor a Day,’” in recogni-tion of the school’s mas-cot, says Garber. Thevisit, in which a prospec-tive student shadows acurrent student, givesthe candidate a feel for thecampus, student body, teach-ers and administrators.

With the results of their re-search and visits in hand, parents should decide—ontheir own or in consultationwith their older students—the schools to which they in-tend to apply. “Three schoolstops,” says Donawa. “There’s alot of stress—for both parent andstudent—in applying to schools and, honestly, students are too young to have to feel that stress.”

The Archdiocese of Washington concurswith that assessment, allowing students toapply to only two diocesan high schools andone in an adjoining diocese. The co-choice sys-tem levels the playing field by preventing ex-ceptional students from being accepted intonumerous schools. “It allows many more stu-

ith the private school application cycle nearing its end, now is a greattime for parents interested in placing their child in a school in fall2012 to begin looking. Beginning almost a year ahead of theapplication deadline may seem excessive to some, but schooladministrators emphasize it is not.W

dents—including some wonderful averagestudents who might otherwise have gottenwait list letters—to be accepted,” says Garber.

Read all materials; prep for testsWhile the application process is not

necessarily difficult, it can be time con-suming. The requirements vary not onlyby grade, but by school. Both Garber andDonawa stress the importance of readingthe application package thoroughly, well inadvance of the deadline.

Private school applications can be a bitlike a puzzle with many little pieces that mustall be put together, says Judith Greenberg, owner and director of School Finders, LLC,which serves Maryland andVirginia suburbs, and Washington, D.C.It’s not unusual for aschool to request letters of recommendation, test results, a transcript, a student writingsample and a medical history. Personal inter-views with parents and, sometimes, with stu-dents may be required.

Some type of testing is also required. Some elementary schools ask for results of

the WISC (Wechsler Intelligence Scale forChildren) or other intelligence tests. Oth-ers require standardized tests, such as theCTBS Terra Nova. Schools generally willnot accept tests more than two years old.“Even if not required, any test that showsa level of intelligence in an objective way isbeneficial,” says Donawa.

At the middle and high school levels, most independent schools require prospec-tive students to take either the SecondarySchool Admissions Test (SSAT) or the In-dependent School Entrance Exam (ISEE).The majority of Catholic high schools re-quire candidates to take the High SchoolPlacement Test (HSPT), which is offeredthe first two weekends of December.

“It’s important to remember that testscores are just one facet (of admissions de-cisions),” says Garber. “We realize anyonecan have a bad day. That’s why we strive toevaluate the whole child; why we ask for atranscript and teacher recommendations.”

mendations can carry weight, accordingto Donawa. “While it’s nice to knowwhat the parent thinks the child’sstrengths and weaknesses are, teacherreferences help paint a picture in a moreobjective way.”

Some schools require interviewswith the parent, the student or both, although usually independent of eachother. At Bishop McNamara and TheMaryland International School, teach-ers and administrators assess studentsbut don’t formally interview them.

“We place kids in a classroomwith their peers,” says Donawa, “andlook at their social skills and howthey respond to the introduction of anew language.”

“I interact with all students whenthey come for their shadow visit,” says

Garber. “It puts less pressure on themyet still allows me to get a feel for whothey are.”

Awaiting the newsWhile there are some schools that

admit students on a rolling basis, most generally send notification let-ters to parents sometime betweenearly February and late March.

“Letters range from acceptance towait-list to denial,” says Garber. “It’simportant to read the letters and re-spond in a timely manner. An accept-ance letter may require you to registeryour child by a certain date, while await-list letter may have certain con-ditions—such as notifying the schoolthat you want to remain on the waitlist and sending copies of futuregrades as they become available.”

At The Maryland International DaySchool, Donawa places personal phone

calls to all parents to let them know theschool’s decision.

“We don’t want parents sitting onpins and needles,” she says. “We letthem know as quickly as possible, usu-ally within three weeks, what theirchild’s status is.”

For those whose children are notaccepted, both Donawa and Garbersuggest that parents try to find outwhy. “It doesn’t hurt to ask for feed-back,” says Garber, “particularly ifyou think you may apply for the fol-lowing year.”

While the competition generally isstiffer for grades above kindergartenfor elementary, sixth for middle, andninth for high school, those who applythe lessons learned during the initialapplication process may well see theirchild accepted into the school of hisor her choice.
