    Conference Objectives

    This educational offering will enable the participant to:

    1 Review key components of a DEC Program and provide an overview of the best practices

    for protection and treatment for drug endangered children throughout the state of Utah.

    Also includes examining effective initiatives in Indian Country.

    2 Increase awareness of resources available to utilize in responding to prescription drug abuse

    and the methamphetamine epidemic.

    3 Provide and gain information on the psychological and social effects on children who are

    exposed to illegal drug activity. Understand how to help children in at-risk environments to

    respond positively to treatment efforts.4 Discuss the national and local medical research efforts focusing on the long-term outcome of

    drug endangered children. Provide training to medical providers to increase the availability of

    medical care for children exposed to drug environments.

    5 Introduce the latest research on the environmental impact from methamphetamine produc-

    tion, distribution and use. Provide training and information on Utahs efforts to clean up

    chemically contaminated properties.

    6 Work with child protection services to better address the needs of children affected from drug

    endangered environments and train staff state-wide to ensure worker safety and protection to

    the children in our communities.

    7 Provide training to law enforcement on successful investigative techniques for narcotic cases

    involving children. Increase the use of the Child and Elderly Endangerment Statute by law

    enforcement and prosecutors in the state of Utah resulting in successful prosecution of drug

    endangered children cases.

    8 Provide information of treatment successes when dealing with methamphetamine and other

    forms of drug addiction. Provide information on treatment programs for mothers and their

    children as well as drug courts.

    9 Identify international drug trafcking trends.

    Continuing Education Credits

    CLE/Post Credit is available.

    General Attendance A general certicate of attendance for 12.5 hours will be presented during the

    afternoon break of the second day.

    This educational activity offers 12.5 nursing contact hours.

    Primary Childrens Medical Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the

    Utah Nurses Association, an accredited approved by the American Nurses Credentialing Centers

    Commission on Accreditation.

    The Utah Department of Health Bureau of Emergency Medical Services recognizes this

    conference for 9.5 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME).

    Social Work - Social Work CEU hours to be announced.

    Course Description

    Utahs fourth Drug Endangered

    Children (DEC) Conference is a two-day event providingpertinent information and training for professionals

    in Utahs DEC programs. Included in the conference will be

    updates on new developments in law enforcement, prosecution,

    child protection, substance abuse, research, medical treatment

    and environmental health.

    liberal arts college. The campus is situated on 27 acres

    capacity to leave the world and its

    eld of drug endangered children in the

    State of Utah.

    Participants involved in Drug Endan-

    gered Children programs go beyond

    what is expected of them in their

    particular disciplines. These individuals

    often come up with non-traditional

    solutions to the problems faced by

    the vulnerable victims of drug abuse.
