Kate Martin, the daughter of Councillor Seán Martin and niece of Fianna Fáil leader Micheál, said she is considering running for a seat on Cork City Council next year. She is expected to run in the seven-seat South East ward alongside Cllr Terry Shannon and the party’s Blackrock/Mahon representative Nicholas O’Keeffe. Her father Seán Martin, a former Lord Mayor, is a council- lor in the South Central ward. A final-year nursing student at UCC, Kate told the Evening Echo that she has made no decision at this stage but said she was con- sidering running in the Local Elections in 2014. Former Lord Mayor Donal Counihan, who was a Fianna Fáil coun- cillor in the South East ward, confirmed to the Evening Echo that he would not be standing in the election to win back the seat he lost in 2009. Other Fianna Fáil candidates expected to run include former councillors Fergal Dennehy in the South West ward and Tom O’Driscoll in the South Central ward. Sinn Féin has already decided on candidates for the City Council and will run newcomer Shane O’Shea alongside sitting councillor Chris O’Leary in the South East ward. Residents in the Ballintemple area, who are opposed to the development of a second GAA pitch at Páirc Chaoimh, have said they are also con- sidering running a candidate in the South East ward.
