the smooth way of shipping
> 95% of all goods are transported to their destination across
the world’s oceans. Of approximately 90,000 very large commercial
ships roughly 50% are powered by MAN Diesel engines. The total
output of all our engines installed on ships exceeds 200 GW.
As global demand for commodities and energy grows, affordable,
reliable transportation by sea becomes more and more important.
To cover this demand MAN Diesel cooperates with partners like
shipyards, licensees, shipping companies and consultants, as well
as with leading universities and organisations, to provide reliable,
cutting-edge technology for our customers worldwide.

> MAN Diesel offers the right solution for every marine appli-
cation on a “one-stop” basis. Starting with gensets of 450 kW out-
put for on-board power, through our medium-speed compact class
and on to our giant two-stroke engines – including the largest Diesel
engine on earth with an output of almost 100 MW output.
The advanced features of our two-stroke engines of the ME gene-
ration and the Common Rail system of our four-stroke engines
ensure that we can comply with tomorrow’s emissions regulations
today.

As a supplier and designer of complete propulsion systems,
MAN Diesel offers tailor-made solutions from a single source. Our
pack ages usually consist of the engine, coupling, gearbox, propel-
ler and associated control system. Alternatively, the system can be
individ ually con figured to meet the very specific demands of an
application. In this way, MAN Diesel is the right propulsion choice
for all types of ships – from tug boats or container vessels to cruise
liners, from offshore supply vessels to LNG carriers.

stAtionAry PoWerThere are various ways to generate power. The MAN Diesel way is outstandingly fast and efficient.
> Electrical power is essential for economic progress. Bet -
ween 1990 and 2008 the worldwide energy consumption increased
by more than 40%. During the same period the total engine output
sold by MAN Diesel for power generation almost doubled. In other
words: the market rewarded our efforts to achieve perfect power
plant solutions with growth rates far above the average.
Forecasts predict a further increase in the worldwide demand for
power until at least 2030. It will remain our mission to find eco-
no m i cally and environmentally sustainable ways to help cover this
demand. From single gensets producing 450 kW to complete turn-
key power plants of 280 MW and more.
17
> MAN Diesel engines are the core components of choice for
power generation. They are more efficient than other solutions and,
thus, more economical. Their low emissions make them an environ-
mentally superior source of energy compared to any other combus-
tion engine.
Core competence
MAn Diesel stAtionAry PoWer18
MAN Diesel offers a wide range of engines for stationary power
generation. Outstanding fuel flexibility is one of our core compe -
tences. Our system expertise ranges from captive power gen-
e ration for ap pli cations in the cement, textile, mining or oil and
gas industries, to power solutions for municipalities, utilities or
independent power producers.

Power plant technology from A to Z
> MAN Diesel designs and builds turn-key power stations.
On-shore or as power barges, using modular designs. In this way,
each power plant can be extended step-by-step to keep pace with
increasing power demand.
MAN Diesel power plants can be run autonomously and have high
efficiencies. In combined heat and power mode (CHP) they generate
both electrical power and thermal energy and so overall energy
utili sation levels as high as 95%.
Our experts in application engineering and project management are
the key to achieving very short construction times: from zero to
280 MW power output in 17 months. Another crucial factor in the
successful completion of projects is our close coordination with
operators, sub-contractors, suppliers, investors and financial insti-
tutions. A finely-tuned orchestra we have conducted many times!

When service is required, the MAN Diesel PrimeServ network kicks
in to organise assistance with the fastest response possible. Remote
or on-site. This guarantees rapid completion of maintenance work
and high avai lability of MAN Diesel products in operation.
> Since operating costs are central to the competitiveness
of a tanker fleet or a power plant, our target is to keep them as low as
possible. Our approach is to offer products with cutting-edge tech-
nological performance, long TBOs (time between overhauls) and
ease of maintenance. Our high quality OEM spare parts con vince
by their long effective lifetimes. In combination with our competent
service specialists, we offer our customers perfect aftermarket
packages.

In our Diesel Academies both customer personnel and our own staff
receive up-to-date training. A know-how-transfer only the OEM can
provide. This ensures that, during operation and maintenance, eve-
rything is carried out correctly and efficiently.
A prerequisite for optimising the performance of a plant and to safe-
guard the customer’s investment.
In addition, the MAN Diesel PrimeServ network promotes a constant
and direct exchange of knowledge among customers, suppliers and
our research and development functions. This helps us to contin uous-
ly increase our market orientation and our customers’ satisfaction
with our performance.
29
The “aspiration” of the engine by turbochargers can increase power
output by up to 300%. The engine can thus reach its optimum effi-
ciency. The portion of exhaust gas not utilised in the turbocharger,
can be used to increase the performance of the overall system, e.g.
in a power turbine.
The development of both engines and turbochargers by MAN Diesel
results in optimum matching of piston engine and turbo-machine.
Of course MAN Diesel offers one-stop service and supplies OEM
spare parts for both systems.
> For more than 70 years MAN Diesel has been successfully
devel oping and building turbochargers for low-speed and medium-
speed en gines. We invented the long-standing design principle
using internal plain bearings. Worldwide more than 50,000 MAN
turbochargers are in operation.

> By means of continuous research and development
MAN Diesel already meets tomorrow´s requirements today. Our aim
is to constantly improve the performance, reliability, economics and
ecological impact of our products and services.
With this philosophy we aim to continue our predominance in large
engine applications, guaranteeing our customers the engines they
need to power world trade to the middle of the 21st Century and
beyond.
Always one step ahead
MAn Diesel reseArCh AnD DeveloPMent 36
Our impressive array of computer-aided design tools and one of the
engine industry’s largest, best-equipped foundries for high quality,
high duty engine components allow us decisively to shorten pro-
duct development, further development and application enginee-
ring times.
Our mastery of these technologies – and, not least, the best brains
in the large engine industry – is the firm foundation for low emissi-
ons, low operating costs, low life cycle costs and long service life.
37
At the same time, technologies which promise the combination of
compliance with Tier III of the IMO emissions limits, due in 2016,
reduced fuel consumption and new levels of power density and
engine flexibility are already advancing at MAN Diesel.
With this level of commitment, MAN Diesel customers can look to
future with confidence.
The innovative competence of MAN Diesel is the basis of our techno -
logical and market leadership. However, behind these achievements
are not machines but people. Motivated individuals whom we
empower, educate and support to achieve the extraordinary. Team-
work is a key element in our philosophy of encouragement and
challenge.
In this way, our social responsibility towards people and places is
not limited to the payment of taxes. It is also reflected in our invest-
ments in the knowledge of our employees. Worldwide.
The latest development step in the MAN Diesel engine range is
across-the-board compliance with the limits specified in Tier II of
the emissions legislation of the International Maritime Organisation,
or “IMO Tier II”. According to the engine type, MAN Diesel uses
combinations of the latest technologies, such as the Miller process
based on revised valve timing, enhanced turbocharging, variable
injection timing, common injection rail technology etc. to reduce
emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) while still maintaining optimum
operating economy.
