Bible DoctrinesLesson 2 THE DOCTRINE OF THE BIBLE

Were going to look at our first topic: The Doctrine of the

Bible.

AS I SAID BEFORE: If were not convinced that the Bible

is AUTHORITATIVE theres not much purpose to this

class.

THERE ARE PEOPLE: Who accuse the Bible of being full

of CONTRADICTIONS & ERRORS.

THOSE CHARGES: Are all Based On: (a couple of things)

1.) Incomplete Information(by that I mean)

Mans Knowledge Just Hasnt Caught Up to GodsKnowledge Yet.

o SO THEY SAY: Oh, the Bibles wrong!o Theres a versethat talks about the sun travelling

around in a circuit (path) . (Psalm 19:6)

Psalm 19:4-6Their line is gone out through all the earth, and

their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a

tabernacle for the sun,

5Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and

rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.

6His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit

(path) unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heatthereof.

FOR YEARS: Critics scoffed thinkingthat the BibleWas teaching ego-cen-tri-city (that the sun revolves

around the earth).

Their current science told them that the sun wasstationary. (So, they laughed!)

Eventually it was discoveredthat the sun is, in fact, moving

throughspaceat approximately 600,000miles per hour.

It is traveling throughthe heavensand has a circuit justas the

Bible stated 3,000 years ago.

(Bible was right!) Man just hadnt caught up yet.

The second reason for these charges (ERRORS /

CONTRADICTIONS): (comes from)

EXAMPLE: APPARENT CONTRADICTION

Acts 9:3-7And as hejourneyed, he came near Damascus: and

suddenly there shined roundabout him a light from heaven:

4And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him,

Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

5And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus

whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against thepricks.

6And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have

me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city,

and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

7And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless,

hearing a voice, but seeing no man.

Q: Did they hear the voice? Yes.)

Acts 22:6-9And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey,

and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there

shone from heaven a great light round about me.7And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me,

Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

8And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am

Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

9And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were

afraid; but they heard not the voiceof him that spake to me.

Q: Did they hear the voice? No.)

Theres no way around that one! Its a clear contradiction.

Not so fast. (Two different Greek words for HEAR.)

ONE MEANS: To hear AND COMPREHENDwhatsbeingsaid.

THE OTHER: To HEAR THE SOUNDof a voice, but you

cantdistinguishwhatsbeing said.

ANOTHER TRANSLATION:

Acts 9:7(Wuest)And the men who were journeying with him

stood speechless HEARING INDEED THE VOICE AS ASOUND ONLY and not understanding the words

Acts 22:9(Wuest)And those with me saw indeed the light,

but DID NOT HEAR THE VOICE of the One

speaking to me, so as to understand the words, but heard itmerely as a sound.

The same thing happened when the Father spoke to Jesus:

John 12:28-2928 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there avoice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify

it again.

29The people therefore, that stood by, and HEARD IT, said that it

THUNDERED: others said, An angel spake to him.

They heard it as a soundbut didnt understand what was said.

(Deal with a lot of this in Apologetics.)

MY POINT: Stay on Gods sideas you read the Bible.

The more you learn the more youll discover that God was

right all along!

THE WORD IS TRUSTWORTHY!

The longer Im in this the more I find out that TRUE

SCIENCE BACKS UP THE BIBLE.

1.The earth is a sphere(Isaiah 40:22) that free-floats in space

(Job 26:7).

ISA 40:22(MSG) - Have you not been paying attention?

Have you not been listening?

Havent you heardthese stories all your life?

Dont you understandthe foundation of all things?

God sits high above the round ballof earth. (SPHERE)

At a time when nearly everyone thoughtthe earth was flat, the

Bible told us that the earth is spherical.

While other sources declaredthe earth sat on the backof an

elephantor turtle(or was heldup by Atlas), the Bible said, "He

hangs the earthon nothing." (3500 years ago)

Job 26:77He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and

hangeth the earth upon nothing.

2.Scripture assumes a revolving(spherical) earth

Luke 17:34-36 34

I tell you, in that night there shall be two men

in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.35

Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken,

and the other left.

36Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the

other left.

Jesus saidthat at His returnsome would be asleep at nightwhile otherswould be working at day time activitiesin the field.

This is a clear indication of a revolving earth, with day and nightoccurring simultaneously.

3.The sun goes in a circuit(Psalm 19:6).

Bible critics have scoffed at these verses, saying that they teach

ego-cen-tri-city (that the sun revolves around the earth).

Current science told them that the sun was stationary. Then they

discovered that the sun is, in fact, moving through space at

approximately 600,000 miles per hour.

It has a circuit just as the Bible stated 3,000 years ago. It isestimated that its circuit is so large it would take 200 million years

to complete one orbit.

4.The incalculable number of stars(Jeremiah 33:22).

Jeremiah 33:22As the STARS cannot be numbered, neither

the sand of the sea measured: so will I multiply the seed of Davidmy servant, and the Levites that minister unto me.

At a time when less than 1,100stars were visibleto the human

eye, God statedthat the stars of heaven were innumerable.

Not until the 17th centurydid Galileo glimpse the immensityof our universe with his telescope.

5.The number of stars, though vast, is finite(Isaiah 40:26).

Although man is unable to calculate the exact number of stars, we

now know their number is finite.

Of course God knew this all along"He counts the number of the

stars; He calls them all by name" (Psalm 147:4).

6.God created "lights" in the heavens "for signs and seasons,and for days and years"(Genesis 1:14-16).

At the time of this Scriptures writingno one understood the

connection between the sun and seasons, days and years.

Of course, we now know a day consists of one revolutionof theearthon its axis; a yearis the time required for the earth to travelonce around the sun.

The seasonsare caused by the changing positionof the earth in

relation to the sun. And, the moon's phases follow one another in

clock-like precisionconstituting the lunar calendar.

7.There is an empty space in the North(Job 26:7).

Job 26:7 (written 3500 years ago) declares: He stretches out the

north over the empty place

Less than 200 years ago, through the advent of massive

telescopes, science learnedabout the great empty space in thenorth.

8.Air has weight(Job 28:25).

It was once thought that air was weightless. Yet 4,000 years agoJob declared that God established "a weight for the wind."

In recent years, meteorologists have calculated that the average

thunderstorm holds thousands of tons of rain. To carry this load,

air must have mass.

9.The Jet stream was anticipated in Scripture(Ecclesiates 1:6).

At a time when it was thought that winds blew straight, the Bible

declares "The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the

north; The wind whirls about continually, and comes again on its

circuit."

King Solomon wrote this 3,000 years ago. It wasnt untilWorldWar II that airmen discovered the jet stream circuit.

10.Oceans contain springs(Job 38:16).

For years, it was thought that oceans were fed only by rivers and

rain.

Yet in the 1970s, with the help of deep-diving research submarines

that were constructed to withstand 6,000 pounds-per-square-inchpressure, oceanographers discovered springs on the ocean floors!

Job 38:16Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea?

11.There are mountains on the bottom of the ocean floor(Jonah 2:5-6).

Only in the last century have we discovered that there are towering

mountains and deep trenches in the depths of the sea.

12.Ocean currentswere mentioned inPsalm 8:8.

Three thousand years ago the Bible described the "paths of the

seas."

What does the Bible mean by paths of the seas? The sea is just a

huge mass of water, how then could it have paths?

Man discovered the existence of ocean currents in the 1850s, but

the Bible declared the science of oceanography 2,800 years ago.

Matthew Maury (1806-1873) is considered to be the father of

oceanography. He was bedridden during a serious illness andasked his son to read a portion of the Bible to him.

While listening, he noticed the expression paths of the sea. Upon

his recovery, Maury took God at His Word and went looking for

these paths.

He discovered ocean currents that follow specific paths through the

seas! His book on oceanography is still considered a basic text onthe subject and is still used in universities.

13.The Water cycle was described(Ecclesiastes 1:7;Jeremiah10:13;Amos 9:6).

Four thousand years ago the Bible declared that God "draws up

drops of water, which distill as rain from the mist, which theclouds drop down and pour abundantly on man" (Job 36:27-28).

The ancients observed mighty rivers flowing into the ocean, but

they could not conceive why the sea level never rose. Though they

observed rainfall, they had only quaint theories as to its origin.

Meteorologists now understand that the hydrological cycle consists

of evaporation, atmospheric transportation, distillation, and

precipitation. (The hydrological cycle was not fully accepted untilthe sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, 2500 years after the Bible

declared it was so.)

14.When dealing with disease, clothes and body should bewashed under runningwater(Leviticus 15:13).

Up until 100 years ago doctors washed their hands in a basin of

still water, resulting in the death of multitudes. We now know thatdoctors must wash their hands under running water.

15.Circumcision on the eighth day is ideal (Genesis 17:12;

Leviticus 12:3;Luke 1:59).

Medical science has discovered that the blood clotting chemical

prothrombin peaks in a newborn on the eighth day. This istherefore the safest day to circumcise a baby. How would Moses

have known that?

16.The First Law of Thermodynamics

Genesis 2:1 (after creation) states: Thus the heavens and the earth

were finished, and all the host of them. The Hebrew word usedhere is the past definite tense for the verb finished, indicating an

action completed in the past, never again to occur. The creation

was finishedonce and for all. That is what the First Law of

Thermodynamics says. It states that neither matter nor energy can

be either created or destroyed. There is no creation ongoing

today. It is finished exactly as the Bible states.

17.The Second Law of Thermodynamics

Hebrews 1:10,11 (written 2000 years ago): ... And, You, Lord, in

the beginning have laid the foundation of the earth; and the

heavens are the works of your hands: They shall perish; but you

remain; and they all shall wax old as does a garment. The Bible

tells us that the earth is wearing out. This is what the Second Law

of Thermodynamics states. This wasnt discovered

by science until comparatively recently.

The point?

An Intelligence beyond our own is responsible for the Bible!

A.The KORAN1.) The earth is fixed in place and motionlessSurah 40:64 (It is God who made for you the earth a fixed place)

2.)The Sun sets in a Muddy SpringSurah 18:86. Till, when he reached the setting-place of the sun, he found it

setting in a muddy spring.

3.)The Stars are Missiles Shot at DevilsSurah 67:5 And verily We have beautified the world's heaven with

stars/lamps, and We have made them missiles for the

devils, and for them We have prepared the doom of flame.

4.)The Moon Emits LightSurah 71:16 And hath made the moon a light therein, and made the sun a

lamp? (Uses the word noor which refers to an entity which

emits light.)

5.) The Earth Is FlatTafsir Ibn-Abass(Hadith) Allah is He who created 7 heavens one above the other like a

dome, and of the Earths, the like thereof, 7 planets but they

are flat.

20:53He Who has, made for you the earth like a carpetspread out (Also in 43:10; 50:7; 71:19;

79:30 - And we have made the earth egg shaped.

6.)The Sky Can Fall Down on PeopleSurah 34:9 See they not what is before them and behind them, of the sky

and the earth? If We wished, We could cause the earth to

swallow them up, or cause a piece of the sky to fall upon

them.

WANTED TO WRITE. But, holy men of God spoke as they were

MOVED by the Holy Ghost ... (- New Life Translation)

Notice the word moved.

Its the Greek word Phero (fer-o), which means to beswept along.

THE SAME WORD: the Bible uses to describe Pauls experiencein a storm at sea.

But soon, a very strong wind... blew down from the island. It hit

the ship, and since it was IMPOSSIBLE to keep the ship headed

into the wind, we gave up trying and let it be CARRIED ALONG(Phero) by the wind ... (Acts 27:14-15 - TEV)

Thats a great illustrationof what happened to the men who

wrote the Bible.

They were caught up in the Spirit of God and were swept

along.

The Spirit controlled them to the point that it would havebeen impossible for them to write anything but what the Spirit

inspired them to write.

Now, lets lookat ...

THE WORD INSPIRED

2 Tim. 3:16All Scripture is given by INSPIRATION of God,

and is profitable ...

The word INSPIRED is Theopneustos, which literallymeans: God-breathed.

The thought expressed here is that God breathed His Message

into them, and they breathed it out in their writings.

2.) The Bible Claims Divine AuthoritySince God Wrote It: Its AUTHORITATIVE (can tell us what

to do)

And Gods Word doesnt change with popular opinion.
