    20 Narratives

    Suppose youve got good news, like your team won a competition. What would yousay to express your happiness? Meanwhile, on another occasion you find out that one ofyour friends has just lost his/her money. What would you say to show your sympathy andattention? Do not worry, you can find those expressions and some conversations in thisunit.

    Do you like to read comics, novels or fairy tales? You know, those reading materialsbelong to narratives since the stories are imaginative and the purpose is to entertain oramuse the readers. You will learn more about this text type and have a chance to improveyour skill in writing stories in this unit.

    him away. Arriving at home, he told what had happened to hisfather. His father explained that he should had beaten a drum anddanced so the people there would have bought salt from him.

    Then, he went to a village where there was a fire. Rushingto the place, he started (6) drumming and dancing. How fool hewas! Surely, he was thrown out by the people. At home, his fathertold him that he should have poured water on the fire if he wantedto sell salt there.

    This stupid man didnt (7) lose heart. The next day hearrived at the place where a couple was fighting to each other.Straightly, the foolish man poured a (8) bucketful of water onthem. But, the only result was that again he was chased away.To hear his foolish sons story, the father told him that he shouldhave tried to (9) settle the quarrel so they would have boughtsalt from him.

    In the final effort, the man saw two bulls fighting with eachother. He stepped in to stop the fight, but he was gored to deathby the (10) angry bulls.     Monolog yang diperdengarkan guru dan jawaban:A long time ago there was a couple named Roro Anteng

    and Joko Seger. They lived on the foot of Mount Bromo.Unfortunately, after (1) eight years of marriage, they had nothad any children. It made them sad. For six years they prayed,pleaded the gods to give them children. The gods listened to

    their prayer and complied it on one (2) condition. They wouldhave to (3) sacrifice their youngest son to the Bromo crater.

    After some time, Roro Anteng (4) gave birth to a child.Guess what! It happened every year until they had 25 children.Roro Anteng and Joko Seger lived happily with all theirchildren. It made them (5) ignore their agreement with thegods.

    Then, Mount Bromo erupted. It was actually a signal thatthe gods asked the couple to keep their (6) agreement.However, the couple didnt want to let their (7) youngest son,Raden Kusuma, be sacrificed to the crater.

    On the other hand, soon Raden Kesuma learned aboutthe deal his parents had made and the cause of the MountBromos eruption. He also found out that the lava from thecrater had made the people living near the mountain

    (8) suffered. He didnt want to make everyone sufferedbecause of him. He then made up his mind; he would sacrificehimself to the crater. He did it and the (9) eruption suddenlystopped.

    Then, Bendurana walked away, but he kept stalkingLandorundun.

    The following day, when Landorundun took a bath in theriver, she saw the mango tree that Bendurana had planted andpicked the fruit. After she ate it, Bendurana asked her who atehis mango. Landorundun said the shepherd boys did it, but theboys said Landorundun did. Finally, Landorundun surrenderedand agreed to marry Bendurana.

    However, Bendurana had another problem. He had to finda way to take Landorundun with him, apart from her parents.Yeah, he got one. To trick her mother Lambe Susu, Benduranagave her a bottle with a large hole on its bottom, and orderedLambe Susu to fill it with water. When Lambe Susu realized thatshe had been tricked, she just saw her daughter sailed away.

    Certainly, the young lovers strongly refused it. They lovedeach other. Furthermore, it was unfair to judge Raditya becauseof his fathers bad attitude. They were different persons. Though itwas not allowed, they kept on seeing each other.

    One day, something terrible happened to Pervita. The daywas already dark, around ten p.m. she was walking home alone.On the way, three drunken men stopped her and tried to do badthings to her. She screamed for help, but nobody heard.Coincidentally, Raditya passed the street. He fought against thosemen. He was bleeding, but he won and Pervita was safe.

    Arriving home, Pervita told everything to her parents. Theywere very grateful for what Raditya had done. One important thingwas they approved Pervita and Radityas relationship. The youngcouple felt so happy.

    Biwar decided to kill the dragon and set traps in the mouth of

    a cave. Then, he played his tifa and sang near it. It attracted thedragon and it moved toward the caves mouth. When it entered itshead to the mouth of the cave, Biwar pulled the rope that linked tohis traps, and numbers of weapons like spears, daggers, arrowsand clubs, hit the head of the dragon. It screamed and rocked itsbody very hard, then died.

    The angel couldnt understand the reason for that suffering.One day as the angel-bird perched on a big tree standing on a hillin the middle of a field and lamented its fate, four criminals cameunder the tree to divide their loot. Then, they decided to send twoof them to buy some food and drink to have a feast. As they werecoming back from the city, the two criminals decided to put poison

    in the food so they can divide the loot of the other two criminalsbetween themselves.

    Coincidentally, the other two criminals decided to kill the foodbearing crooks and grab their loot too. So they shot them. Afterthat, they ate the food and drank the wine and died in pain soonafter that.

    Thats when the angel understood the consequences ofimproper, illegal desires. They brought suffering, sorrow anddeath. God sent us to this Earth to live by the law of this freedom.
