Exploring new territory . . .It took me about 20 to 30 min-

utes to reach the community ofFulshear, TX, from the Galleria area. After turning into the neighborhoodof Cross Creek Ranch, I found thebeautiful home we’re featuring onpage 44.

Art Director Robert Coplin andPhotographer Anthony Rathbunalready had set up camp to captureimages for the story written byMarsha Canright.

If you don’t know Fulshear, it’s abooming little community – 8.2square miles as a matter of fact – inthe northwest part of Fort BendCounty. It was founded in 1824,when Churchill Fulshear received aland grant from Mexico.

A long-time Houstonian friendremembers it as just being an endlesssight of farmland. No more, it’s athriving community of about 2,900-plus residents!

It may be worth taking a ride outthere, especially if you’re in the mar-ket for a spacious new home.

As I write this for February, it isstill the first month of the year. AndI continue to hear and read all kindsof projections for 2015! It is bothfun and exciting to anticipate what’sahead.

Popular Houston Blogger JoniWebb shares her own design obser-vations on page 40. She’s a goodone to pay attention to. Her insightsare thoughtful and unbiased.

Other designers, writers and homeshow organizers say to watch for:• Warm and homey kitchens; theultra sleek ones are losing favor. • Dominant colors, such as neutrals, with gray and black being popular.• Stainless is getting paired morewith rustic woods, or wood withmarble.• Traditional with clean lines appeal,as with shaker-style cabinets.• More ceiling emphasis, in terms ofshape, style and features.• Lighting is making a bigger designstatement. Think elegant, dramatic.

One more found tidbit . . .homeowners apparently seek a crossbetween urban sophistication andcountry comfort. Interesting . . .Fulshear, TX, describes itself aswhere small town charm meetsurban sophistication. Guess that’s thenew buzz phrase.

Have a great month,Susan (and Sam)

Which area of Houston is your specialty? From Memorial and Villages to the MedicalCenter and all in between which includesTanglewood, Galleria, Highland Village,River Oaks, West U, Bellaire/Meyerland,and Rice Militiary/ Memorial Park area.

What advice can you share on how to sell homes quickly? A seller's home should be well maintained, clean, and free ofclutter with lights on and window coverings open.....and priced inthe zone of other comparable homes.

What’s one thing you would tell homeowners who are readyto put their home on the market? Look at your home like abuyer would.

What do you do that other agents may not to ensure a sellergets top dollar? I go through the home and advise on stagingand editing the home so it shows the best. I also see the competi-tive homes so I have an edge on the benefits or negatives of theother homes.

Where are the hottest markets in the Houston area? Areasthat have trees, amenities, good schools or are close in.

Dixie called me because she had seen abedroom I had done in my column forHouston House and Home.“

I just thought it was a great transformation on a budget,” sheexplains, noting that she thought I could help them re-work theirbathroom.

Not a stranger to working with a decorator, (Dixie and her husband Robert have used Ted Currier to remodel other rooms intheir house).

TIP: One way to balance a newKohler “Tea for Two” soaker tub in the room is to install a glass showerenclosure. The couple had lots of choices and could not make decisions on their 12 x 15-foot bathroom space.

“It was obvious that our bathroom just did not feel ‘finished’,”Dixie says. I did not want the room overly ‘styled.’ I just wantedmore of a collected, casual look using some accessory pieces wealready owned.

“Obviously the flow of the room had to work—I just could notvisualize it.” She adds that they just were not moving forward

AFTER: A clear glass shower enclosure, hiding the toilet behind the shower and apocket door painted Benjamin Moore White Dove Satin Impervo changed this room entirely. The walls are Benjamin Moore HC-143 Wythe Blue. A new M&M chandelierover the new Kohler soaker tub in “biscuit” added light and glamour to a functionalroom. The Crema Marfil marble is by Master Tile. BEFORE: The new biscuit Toto toi-let facing the doorway was frustrating this homeowner.

on their own, and she wasfrustrated that the space wasnot ‘finished.’

“I never liked our bath-room. The room was brokeninto two sections. One sec-tion was a dressing area offfrom the closet with one sinkand a long vanity. You thenwent into another sectionthat was closed off. It hadone sink with a corner medi-cine cabinet on each side. There was no tub and theshower was in a corner. Itwas small and dark. The toi-let sat facing the door to theroom. If the door wasn’tproperly closed, there was noprivacy at all.

“Your attention to detailwas very helpful. I felt moreconfident in achieving mydesires after our meeting. Mygoal was to have a soaker tuband a larger seamless show-er—also a privacy area for thetoilet.

“One of your suggestionsthat stood out was the idea

AFTER: Building a sinking custom doorand drawer storage -- painted BenjaminMoore White Dove Satin Impervo -- inthe space both balanced the room andallowed easy traffic flow.

BEFORE: A lack of storage was spoilingthis lovely room.

AFTER: : Hanging double mirrors over the new Kohler Caxton double sinks in “bis-cuit,” and adding new recessed cans by Lightolier and sconce lighting from LightingInc. not only brightened the room but adds style and glamour, too.

that the pocket doorcould recess into the wall. The contractor had decid-ed it needed one to twoinches. You told me thatwas not necessary. He haddone my other bathremodeling the sameway,” she says.

The hardest suggestionfor her to visualize?

“To be able to haveboth a soaker tub andshower without the spacefeeling cramped. We lostour linen closet, which isnow where the tub is. Thecontractor was able toplace it so that it butts upto the larger closet, whichnow gives me shoe andhandbag storage, too. Healso was able to steal fourto five inches of spacefrom the bedroom wall toaccommodate a ledgearound the tub,” she says.

“It’s the little thingsthat make such a differ-ence and I would recom-mend seeking help fromknowledgeable and expe-rienced professionals. It iswell worth the expense,”Dixie says.

What have friends andfamily said about thechanges? They love them, particularly the mirrorshanging over the doublesinks.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Talk show host Oprah Winfrey repeatedly

likes to say, “Let your home rise up to meet you.” Her view

is that your personal space should be a safe haven, in addi-

tion to being a reflection of who you are – or perhaps want

to be.

We think those words apply to everyone – from babies to

adults. They, too, benefit from having a neat, clean and

pleasing environment – one that protects and nurtures them.

Whether you are a do-it-yourselfer or someone who can

enlist the services of others, our experts – an interior design-

er and a decorative painter – talk about some of their

favorite spaces for younger people.

As the young mother of two toddlers, Meg Lonergan knowsa thing or two about decorating with kiddos in mind.

Q: You went pretty bold with your son’s nursery. What did you

do, what was the objective?

My objective was to design a gender-neutral nursery thatmy husband and I would enjoy spending time in. I didn’twant just a room that felt "babyish.” The room also

needed to function as our guest room I originally was inspired to use a mint color. After seeing

Farrow & Ball's black-blue paint color at BoxwoodInteriors, I knew I had to paint my nursery that color. Itwas a major risk, but it payed off. We loved how cozy it felt.

Q: Were there challenges?

Storage was a major problem, because we lived in a 1,100-sqaure-foot heights bungalow, but I found the armoire atthe Guild Shop and used that to store clothing. We usedpicture ledges from IKEA and had them painted the wallcolor to store books.

Q: What does every nursery need?

In all of my projects, we use custom window treatments. They create warmth and, plus, the blackout lining is essen-tial. Book storage is also essential in a child's room. Softflooring and bright happy colors are ideal for babies andyoung children.

Lulu DK fabric was used on the shades (upper left, photo by MeganThompson). The painting above the daybed served as the inspiration for thecolor palette used throughout. On the lower left photo by Kate LeSueur, thePaule Marrot butterfly was found at the end of the proect. It fit into theroom perfectly, according to Meg Lonergan of LeSueur Interiors.

Q: What is the best investment someone can make? I liketo invest in items like artwork in a child’s space. It willstand the test of time. Paint colors can change, cribshave a two- to three-year life span, but artwork willalways be on the walls.

Q: How do you upgrade a look without breaking the piggy-

bank?

Sometimes it’s about compromise. With one client, wefell in love with a Raoul Textiles print. It was pricey todo the entire window using that fabric, but we decidedto only use it as a leading edge trim to save on fabriccosts. In the end, we were thrilled because the patternwas very charming without dominating the room. I didthe same with someone else . . . I again used a moreexpensive fabric for the bottom banding on thedraperies and bought an affordable linen to use on top.

In the upper photo, Jossette Droz of Droz Design updated this teen boy’sroom. She used most of the furnishings already there, but she incorporatedan energizing paint design to liven up his space. She began with red, hisfavorite color. All are Benjamin Moore Shades. In the lower photo, she alsoused Benjamin Moore colors on the wall in the girl’s room. Jossette Droz recently moved to Houston from Puerto Rico, where she was an established color expert and enjoyed redoingmany a room for youngsters.

Q: What is your starting point? And what do you consider when

designing?

When I am designing, I like to create rooms that wiIl grow witheach child. The first step is to have a good skeleton in place – by this Imean good quality furniture pieces that will look good no matter yourchild's age; pieces that will last and grow with him/her. My objective isfor the child to love his/her space. I work hard to make beautiful aswell as functional spaces. I want them to feel comfortable in theirrooms, knowing that their space represents who they are. When work-ing in a child's room, I always start by talking to the kids or parents(depending on the age). I find out what colors and things they like, because I want to let their personalities show through the design.

Q: What is the biggest expense?

Furniture should be your biggest cost item, because by simply changing walls and acces-sories, you can change a room completely..

Q: What are some of your tried-and-true prefer-

ences for a child’s room?

I like using white microfiber because it ischild friendly and easy to clean. Plus, whitelooks beautiful and crisp, but since one littlegirl – my client – liked the color turquoise, Iadded turquoise-colored buttons on the bed.For her quilt, I ordered a solid turquoise fromAmity to complement the rest of the room.Custom-made pieces allow you to get exactlywhat you need and want. In the girl’s room, wedid do some custom items, like the bed and thepillow shams. I also like cotton shaggy arearugs, which are great because they are machinewashable.

Wallpapers – from traditional to bold, edgy, animal prints, geometrics or floraldesigns – can transform a space in a matter of hours. The wallpapers of our parents’generation are gone – and new, updated and upgraded wallpapers are making aresurgence. And in a big way.

Careful selection of a wallpaper can make a small room feel larger, a big roomfeel cozier and an opportunity to make a dim space feel light and airy. Walls canbecome a focal point, with furnishings accentuating the design element created bythe wallpaper. And, according to Houston designer Chandos Dodson Epley, ofChandos Interiors, some of the newer styles can even “buy time” until the home-owner has purchased art for a wall.

“Some of the newer abstract wallpapers almost look like paintings. If homeown-ers have not yet purchased art for their home, these wallpapers can give the roompersonality before art has been purchased,” she says.

Epley says she has always recommended to her clients wallpaper as an option toadd texture and “break up all the Sheetrock walls” in a house. She favors grasscloths, lacquered, wool felt and hand-painted papers to bring “instant décor” to ahome.

“I tell my clients to select something they love,” she adds, butwallpaper can be replaced (papered over) easily if they grow tired ofa design.

With designers recommending wallpaper more often, manufac-turers are seeing the resurgence in its popularity.

“Wallpaper is back in the last few years and it is very differentfrom the bad memories people have of it from the 1960s and1970s,” says Christiana Coop, co-founder of Hygge & West, aMinneapolis-based wallpaper company. “Over time, there havebeen improvements in the technology for the paper and the paste, making it easier to put up and take down.”

Hygge & West offers collections of wallpapers, some created bythe inspirations of the artists as well as others that were created “toour vision.” The new popularity covers a wide range of styles, frommetallics to big or small scale designs as well as florals and animalprints. But Coop noted that wallpaper selection is personal – whatsomeone likes or strikes them in a good way.

For designers, the endless varieties of wall coverings can easily adddifferent dimensions to a room, while giving the space a fresh butnot fussy look.

Additionally, wallpaper can help create allusions – stripes makes alow ceiling feel higher, metallic papers can make a snug powderroom feel larger and dynamic, textured papers can warm up a

And, wallpaper can have other applications besides covering allfour walls. Paper the inside of a bookcase or shelf to draw attentionto it, select a wallpaper mural to highly a specific spot with unex-pected vibrancy or line a closet for a surprise transformation.

Two tidbits of wisdom: check to make sure each roll of wallpaperreceived has the same batch and reference number and is the sameshade. And – hire a professional to hang the wallpaper.

For the second half of this decade, there are several major design ele-ments that seem to be here to stay– for a while, anyway.

Trends stay current for around10 years, and most of these lookshave been gaining in popularity forthe past five years.

The younger set is definitelydriving the most major of changes.

Monochromatic, all white orbeige interiors seem boring now –unless there are pops of coloraround. Twenty, 30-and 40-year-olds want color and pattern. Andthey favor more contemporary andmid-Century designs.

JoniWebb Welcomes in 2015 With Bright, Bold Decorating Trends

Houston Blogger

This is a modified reprint of a post Joni Webb recently placed on her widely popular blog called Cote de Texas. We always enjoy her insights

and spot-on trend sightings. You can read and see more images related to this post by visiting www.cotedetexas.blogspot.com

For those, like me – who are olderand more settled – bold color andpattern can be very scary. Anythingother than white has definitely goneagainst my aesthetic. But I have tosay, I find myself more and moreattracted to both color and pattern.

In my own family room, (aboveleft) I recently changed out my sim-ple striped curtains for patternedones and added pops of pink linen(with the throw pillows). I reallywould like to add a pink chintz orpatterned fabric to my chairs. AndI’d like to swap the linen for velvet, amaterial I prefer. Maybe this year I’lltake the leap . . . .

Some designers are going bold insome previously white-only rooms. One designer chose to introduce yel-low and pinks in a once-all whiteroom. She drew inspiration from apainting.

Designer Katie Stassi Scott electrified this room by adding a tufted red sofa to thepale pink and white color scheme.

Another designer paired together a bright green with asoft aqua color to yellow, which she used on the curtainsand a loveseat. In the same room, a tufted sofa remainswhite, in addition to a chair.

The tufted look has really taken off. But the biggest trendthis decade is in lighting fixtures. The Sputnik is THE fix-ture to have. It’s everywhere now. And it instantly brings atrend factor to the room.

Another lighting fixture being used to update and com-plement a mix of classic and modern styles is the lacqueredmetal Mouille light.

Blue is a hot color this year. While many of the blues arevery bright, I prefer a softer shade. Velvet is also a trendyfabric. And, did you know that cotton velvet can be placedin the washing machine? Yes!

In addition to the velvets and tufting, I’m seeing moredark painted walls, touches of gold metal, patterned rugs, and wallpaper.

Design daredevil Jessie Miller created my favorite roomever in her “One Room Challenge.” She created in six weeksa stunning room – and one that offers everything theyounger set is lusting after and more. First, the walls areblack. And there is the crystal Sputnik from Anteriors – gor-geous! She added molding, a faux-finished fireplace and agold bedframe.

Black and white patterned floors are popular, too. Mossy green velvet, green walls and animal print rugs,

such as leopard, offer a trendy look. Mixing metals is on trend, as well. Gold is back. In fact,

you’ll find it mixed with silver, brass and bronze.Bar carts are a hot item, too.Welcome 2015!

A House Suited for a LifestyleAND FOR A FAMILY GROWING IN SIZE

Rising above a lake at Cross Creek Ranch, with dozens of win-dows and French doors to frame the view, this custom home isdesigned as a gathering place for a large and growing family.Still, it maintains privacy and the serenity for the couple thatlives here.

It was the picturesque location that drew homeownersWilly and Tricia Pezzia to the site. When they saw it, theyknew it was the perfect place to build their dream home. Thehouse was designed to take maximum advantage of the naturalsurroundings.

“When we lived in Houston, we would make countrydrives into the Fulshear area, especially in the springtime to seethe wildflowers, and we wondered if we could move here oneday,” Tricia Pezzia says.

When they opened an office in Katy – he is a physician andshe is a registered nurse who manages his practice – theydecided this was the time.

casual, airy feel. The structure faces west opening onto a smallpark with the lake and a natural area to the east. It’s in a small, gated development.

“When you’re inside this house, it feels like you’re on vaca-tion,” she says.

Two courtyards flank either side of the entry with Frenchdoors connecting from the dining, living and study areas. Allof the windows and French doors have transoms, which keepthe house light and bright.

“When the weather is nice, we open all the doors and it isjust wonderful,” adds Pezzia.

The central Great Room features a handsome fireplace andincorporates the living, dining and kitchen areas into an ideal spacefor large family gatherings.

The homeowners have five children and nine grandchildren, andparents who live in the Houston area, so large gatherings are fre-quent affairs.

“We needed a large dining space that could accommodate 20-25 people on a regular basis so we decided to open up the entiremiddle section of our home,” she says.

“We have only one dining area open to the kitchen and it’s bigenough to add a second table and a children's table when need-

ed.”-The 5,000-square foot house is divided into three areas in akind of H formation: the Great Room and two separate wings, which house the bedrooms and auxiliary areas. One includes themaster suite and a study large enough to contain the doctor's grandpiano and two desk areas for working and reading. The studyopens onto a front courtyard.

The north wing has two guest bedrooms – including a grand-children’s room with two queen beds – large enough so they can allstay together when they sleep over. There’s also a large game roomand three baths plus two half baths.

The game room has a 73-inch TV with seating area, a pooltable, a fooseball, a game table and large walk in bar. Pezzia saysthis room gets a lot of action in the winter when it is too cold or

rainy to be outside. When the weather permits, and it often does, the exterior

of the house is a fun extension of the living space. On the eastside facing the lake is a 63-foot lanai with a fireplace and a fulloutdoor kitchen at one end. Adjacent is a 60-plus foot pooldesigned for water volleyball and swim races.

“Our summers are spent outdoors in the pool overlookingthe lake and eating outside,” Pezzia says.

Interior designer Julie Dodson worked with the couplefrom ground-up construction to completion.

Tricia Pezzia saw Dodson’s work at a “Pink Ribbon” show-house in Memorial and liked her work. She contacted thedesigner and the two of them instantly clicked.

The couple has five grown children and nine grandchildren, all of whom like to visit. The Pezzias wanted to easily accommodate them all.

They spent the next nine months creating the home’s inte-riors together. Dodson had custom furniture built for the liv-ing area, helped shop for tiles, and the two visited Roundtopfor mirrors, chairs and special accent items.

“She wanted something lighter, something softer andbreezier, and she was very involved. Of all the houses that Ihave helped to design, this is the one that people love themost,” Dodson says.

This expansive living area features white linen furniture andsea grass rugs.

Pizza has a passion for design and for creating a comfort-able living space, even though she says she was born to be anurse.

She enjoys a crisp, clean look but sometimes likes to "shake

it up," accessorizing with accent pillows to change the lookseasonally. Right now she's drawn to blue and white, but con-sidering chartreuse for the spring.

The kitchen is the heart of this home, and a large one was amust for this family. The creamy white cabinets are custombuilt Benedetti, and the counters are Calcutta marble withtaupe and blue-gray veining from Arizona Tile.

There are two full size sinks, two dishwashers and a sepa-rate refrigerator and freezer in the kitchen and a full sizerefrigerator in the utility room. Appliances include a Wolfcommercial range, Sub zero refrigerator and freezer, Boschdishwashers, and a Wolf microwave drawer

“It’s beautiful, but livable. It’s exactly right for their needsand aesthetic,” says Dodson.

Interior designer Julie Dodson worked with the Pezzias to create a home big on comfort and style. This is their master bedroom.

To landscape the site, which is just undera half acre, the homeowners used aKickerillo-recommended landscape designerlocated in Richmond. The yard is trimmedin hollies, boxwoods and seasonal flowerslike violas, cyclamen and alyssum.

The Pezzias have lived in different areasof Houston, including the Tanglewood,Memorial, and Royal Oaks Country Club, but this is their favorite location.

The couple did downsize at one point, moving into a house under 2,700 squarefeet. Six months later, their first grandchildwas born. By the time the second arrived, they knew they needed to “upsize.”

After living in this house for four years, the couple is still excited and content withthe dwelling. It is their retreat from theworking world.

“Our wonderful location on the lakebrings something new and entertainingto watch every day. We have many sea-sonal ducks, cranes, egrets and theoccasional alligator. There are wed-dings, fireworks, triathlons and specialevents on the hill across the lake thatare fun to watch from our back patio,”Pezzia says.

“We are in the midst of nature here. The lake is mostly quiet and tranquilduring the summer but when a coldfront blows through in the winter thewater gets very rough and can evenhave white caps. The winds can sendpatio cushions flying, but are a blessingin the middle of summer. We see someof the most beautiful sunrises, sunsetsand full moons," she adds.

A comfortable TV room is a perfect spot for the family to gather and relax. In the other half of this space is a game table, pool table and wet bar.

Inside Interior Designer’s HomeWHERE SOME THINGS JUST DON’T CHANGE – AND THAT’S A GOOD THING!

BY SUSAN FOX • PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANTHONY RATHBUN

Interior Designer added the white enamel pendant light to give her Country French dining room a more “hip” vibe.

For someone who reportedly likes to change residencesmore than the average person, Interior designer GingerBarber likes to keep things the same.

When visiting Barber’s 2,800-square-foot River Oaks town-home – where she’s lived for the past three and a half years –

the tall brunette says almost all her furnishings are pieces shehas had for years.

The last home she owned was a large traditional GeorgianColonial. Today, she enjoys a cozier, smaller and more con-temporary abode with a front courtyard.

Barber’s pale blue slipcovered sofa is one of her mainstay pieces. The wood doors, leading into the kitchen, are 19th century French pine from Skelton St. John Antiques.

Talking to a visitor, she points to a favored 18th centuryGeorgian pine cupboard she purchased from Carl MooreAntiques years and years ago.

“It took me forever to pay it off, but it’s still with me,” shesays, with a small laugh.

It was in her bedroom – in one past house, her dining roomin another former home, and now it’s in her living room. “I needed a place for my TV,” so it offered the perfect place-ment solution, according to Barber.

white enamel fixture with a peek-a-boo brass interior. The contemporary pendant hangs above a new grayish-bluedining table purchased at Brown. Not of old construction, it ismade with reclaimed wood.

The side buffet once revealed its original fruitwood, a popu-lar wood used by the French.

The former countertop was brown granite. Wanting a more casual, country feel, she had a specially painted wood installed in its place.

She bought the buffet 30 years ago when on a shoppingtrip abroad. She decided with this last move, though, to haveit stripped and painted a light blue.

The front outdoor space, which beckons thanks to comfort-able seating, sealed the deal, as it was a must-have spot for herdog, Ranger, who recently died.

An animal lover, Barber now shares her time with horsesthat have been neglected. Besides design, she says her passionoutside work is Habitat for Horses.

In fact, in her own home as well as in her clients’, visitorsrecognize her influences, in part, from the horses painted onhuge canvases hanging prominently in various spaces.

SummerCampsfor Your KidsWHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

BY BARBARA CANETTI

Summer is coming – and sooner than you think. Kids will be out of school and needing something to do –

and who wants them at home sitting in front of the TV allday?

If thinking about summer camps for children – of all ages, know it is not too early to start making plans.

Sarah Gish, creator and publisher of the Summer BookOnline (www.thesummerbook.com), a free database listingmore than 200 Houston-area camps and programs, says thefirst thing parents need to do before choosing a camp is to sitdown with their children and find out what they are interested

COLLEGECAMPS: DigitalMedia Academyoffers kids theopportunity tolearn STEM(Science,Technology,Engineering &Math) skillsthrough hands-onproject work:Learn program-ming in Java andC++; discover advanced Minecraft modding and how to design videogames; create apps and games for iOS and Android; and make movies, robots and more! Learn on the Rice University campus, eat in the samedining halls as its undergrads; students ages 12 and over can even stayovernight. Digital Media Academy selected Rice not only because it is con-stantly ranked among top 20 universities in the U.S., but because they arealso ranked No. 6 in student happiness.

The University of Houston and UH Downtown offer several summercamps including I.D. Tech Camp, where kids build critical 21st centurySTEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) skills in intimate clus-ters of just 8 students maximum per instructor, and collaborate with newfriends.

Texas A & M University offers a Youth Adventure Program, a series ofone week courses designed to encourage career exploration in fields ofinterest to gifted and talented students.

Camp Stewart campers enjoy the refreshing waters of the Guadalupe River while learning the fundamentals of canoeing.

in doing. The list is being updated now to reflect 2015 camps.A statewide or national search for camps can be done

through a free database offered by the American CampAssociation (www.acacamps.org/). This resource of accreditedcamps allows you to search by location, price, duration andother variables. It lists 73 accredited camps within 300 milesof downtown Houston.

“Parents sometimes go into this process blindly. So, first, find out what your children want to learn, find out what theirpassion is,” says Gish. “Summer is a great time to explore theirpassion.”

There are literally hundreds of camps and programs avail-able, with a wide range of activities, specializations and prices. To start sifting through the options, determine whether youare looking for a day camp or a sleep away, and how far youwant to travel. Next decide if you prefer a gender-based or areligion-based camp. And third, figure out your budget.Once those large categories are selected, it is time to choosethe type of camp – to name a few:

• General activities• Sports specific • Theater/dance• Art• Nature/exploration• Horse-riding• Surfing/swim/diving• Music• Science• Computer• Educational (writing, reading, SAT prep)• Empowerment• Language emersion• Hunting/fishing• Cooking

“There is so much kids can experience,” Gish says. “They willmake new friends, get away from home, their routine and theirparents. Plus, they often learn new skills at camp.”

Other factors to consider: duration of programs, health andsafety concerns and whether the programs offers scholarshipsor other pricing incentives.

The lifelong memories your children receive from attendingcamp is as important as the social skills, independence andhealthy competition they learn at camp. Parental separation isan important part of the growing up cycle, and camps aredesigned to help the children (and their parents!) adjust totime away from each other, she says.

Morning Glory Ranch, near Waller, TX, offers experiential outdoor education& equine therapy wellness opportunities to all individuals, including thosewith special needs, to reach independence.

Camp Summit is an overnight camp in Argyle, Texas for ages 6 to adult whoare developmentally delayed, physically challenged, multi-disabled or dualsensory impaired.

Feed the Soil, and The Soil Will Feed Your Plants BY ANGELA CHANDLER

There is a decades-old adage in organic garden-ing – “feed the soil, not the plants.”

We say this because plants do not grow independently. Theygrow in a partnership with a diverse colony of micro- and macro-organisms, including fungi, beneficial bacteria, micro-arthropods,nematodes, insects and worms.

We are just beginning to understand the complexity of soil biolo-gy. It is thought that soils may host as much as a quarter of theworld’s biodiversity. The Food and Agriculture Organization ofthe United Nations has declared 2015 the International Year ofSoils, hoping to focus more research and attention to the impor-tance of the biosphere beneath our feet.

Soil is the foundation of agriculture at all levels, including homegardening. When gardeners maintain healthy soil biology, healthyplants follow. It’s really not difficult to do. In fact, it is as easy as 1-2-3.

STEP ONEStop using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. These chemicals dam-age soil biology, killing off many inhabitants. There are better alter-natives.

STEP TWOAssess the structure of your soil. Good garden soil should containorganic matter, which supports soil biology and enables good rootdevelopment. Organic matter holds up to 5 times more nutrientsthan clay.

The best way to increase the organic matter is to add high qualitycompost. Leaf mold compost contains beneficial fungi and othermicrobes required to establish good soil biology. Compost shouldbe worked into the top 6 inches to 8 inches of soil, and will needto be replenished regularly.

Plants benefit from consistent moisture, but we don’t want soilsto remain water-logged after rain or irrigation. Organic matterhelps balance the water holding capacity and pore space of the soil.Drainage and aeration can be further improved by incorporatingexpanded shale. This porous aggregate is a one-time, permanentsoil improvement.

STEP THREEOnce you have created this organically rich, well-aerated and well-drained environment, soil biology will happen. Micro-organismswill be available to break down nutrients and minerals and makethem available to your plant’s roots.

Nutrients should be provided via a balanced slow-release organicfertilizer, such as Arbor Gate Organic Blend. This all-natural blendprovides major and minor nutrients, minerals, and mycorrhizalfungi. It also provides horticultural molasses, a natural sugar thatfeeds soil microbes and repels pest insects.

Feeding your plants by feeding the soil is working in harmonywith nature. The immediate return is strong, healthy plants. Thelong range benefits include cleaner ground water and soil that ismore resilient to both floods and drought. It’s a sustainablemethod we can all practice, starting today.
