Not the Circus (continued from page 1) A friend excitedly told me that the minister their church was consid-

ering to be their pastor preached that morning in a clown suit. Brochures come across my desk from time to time about jugglers, magicians and the

like, who will come and pack the house with their testimonies. During a Q &

A at a pastors' conference someone from the audience ask the three panel-ists how we can we make the gospel more relevant to our culture. When the

Lord Jesus saves someone who has done drugs, spent time in prison, or lived

a life of immorality, many say that he has a good testimony.

All believers' testimonies are good because salvation is the loving,

gracious and merciful act of God in redeeming man through Jesus Christ's finished work at the cross. All of mankind are in the same cesspool of human

depravity and deserving of eternal death. "There is no one righteous, not

even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one

who does good, not even one... all have sinned and fall short of the glory of

God" (Romans 3:10-12, 23). "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23).

"The gift of God." You do not work for a gift. You do not repay back a gift. Salvation is pure grace. Totally undeserved. It is God's love poured out.

It is His mercy that flowed out freely from the wounds of Jesus. It is God's

justice and righteousness satisfied. Salvation is what God did, not what man does. Our testimonies must be about what Jesus did, not what we did. The

focus of the gospel is Christ, not us. The power in converting lost man is the

gospel. The gospel needs no props. The gospel is relevant in any culture, in any situation, in every language and every people group. The Bible says,

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that

brings salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16). That was why the Apostle Paul's singular focus was, "we preach Christ cruci-

fied" (1 Corinthians 1:23).

You can pack a crowd with clowns and jugglers and magicians and

turn the Church into a circus. But entertainment will never convert a soul. Only the gospel can.
