    In January we forecasted a 3% decline IT purchases in US dollars;

we now are saying its a 10.6% decline for 2009

    Why the worse outlook?

Q1 and Q2 2009 cuts in tech purchases were much deeper than we

expected, due in part to deeper recessions, but also due tobusinesses in the US, the UK, and several other markets cutting

    capital investment way back.

    How Are CIOs Reacting?

Most are facing budget and staff cuts

They are implementing projects to save money andimprove efficiency:

Server centralization, data center consolidation, server anddesktop virtualization

Unified communications (UC), IP videoconferencing, mobilityapplications

What do all these projects have in common?

Communications? Yes, but try again . . .

    Much greater WAN bandwidth needs!

    Stringent WAN performance requirements!

    The Impact?

In 2009 network traffic is growing at 30% to 70% per annum

    Applications Users

    Server virtualization

    Corporate network

    Remote backups

    New real-time applications

    New, dynamic content

    Data center consolidation

Major IT initiatives are stressing the

    network causing a decrease in

    performance and potential bottleneck

    between apps and users

    !

The result is both WAN cost escalation andapp performance problems

    The solution? WAN optimization

WAN optimization technology can: Make the best use of your existing bandwidth

and solve your application performance problems

    But first

You cant manage what you cant measure most

    enterprises have under-invested in performance

    monitoring

Start by understanding your WAN performanceeither use an in-house monitoring tool or buy a

service from your telco, then deploy WAN

    optimization

WAN optimization helps with three keyfinancial benefits

    Bandwidth

    optimization

    Free up bandwidth by reducing

    data and eliminating

    unnecessary roundtrips1

    Infrastructure

    consolidation

    Consolidates branch services in

    datacenters by accelerating

    traffic from centralized locations2

    Reduce

    capital outlay

    Allows shift of capital by

    consuming application (SaaS)

    and hardware (cloud) services3

WAN optimization helps with three keyfinancial benefits

    Bandwidth

    optimization

    Free up bandwidth by reducing

    data and eliminating

    unnecessary roundtrips1

    Avoid private WAN upgrades

    especially on international links

    Leverage lower speed links

where higher rate bandwidth iscostly or unavailable

    Facilitate the migration to

    cheaper Internet links

    Examples

    of savings

    How should you implement WANoptimization?

    WAN optimization can:

Reduce bandwidth and optimize existing resources

    Improve application performance

Solve problems resulting from data centerconsolidation, server centralization, Web servicesdeployment, etc.

Produce a return on investment in 8 15 months

    But:

To impIement it in-house requires CAPEX, skilledimplementation resources, and ongoing management

The alternative? Look at WANoptimization managed services

    No CAPEX

    No implementation resources

    No ongoing management

    Choice of technologies

    Available from all major telcos

May come with an application SLA

    Why telco services make sense

Leverage telcos expertise in: WAN performance measurement & monitoring

Experience in choice of the best WAN optimization kit

    Experience in WAN optimization implementation

    Economies of scale

    The result:

Using telco consulting and managed services you can

buy monitoring and optimization as a flexible service

What to look for in choosing a vendor - whatquestions should you ask?

WAN management service. Does the service offering includenetwork performance monitoring, performance reporting, andtraffic analysis?

WAN optimization service. Is the service customer premisesequipment (CPE)-based or network service-based, or both,

and which vendors' equipment do they support for theirstandard and custom services?

Device management, monitoring, and SLAs. Are theirdashboards integrated into their customer portals, and do theyoffer application-level SLAs?

Revenues, clients, and pricing. What are their currentrevenues, and how many clients do they have?

Global Reach. Can the service provider meet your geographiccoverage needs?
