optimum scheduling of staff in logistics and
distribution centers
Information:
Axxom Software AG presents their ORion-PI® Staff Planning & Scheduling
solution at CeMAT for the first time. The software makes efficient staff
scheduling in logistics and distribution centers possible and is the first,
and until now only, solution on the market to combine material flow and
staff planning.
To achieve this, ORion-PI® Staff Planning & Scheduling relies on a virtual
warehouse model for determining the expected workload and the
scheduling of the employees. In this model for example, shelving and
container types and dimensions are defined and paths, aisles and

conveyor technology established. With the help of intelligent system
support, similar to custom warehouse logic or drag and drop operation,
even large logistics centers with several thousand storage areas can be
depicted within a relatively quick timeframe. The special feature of the
Axxom warehouse model is that the components, such as the individual
shelving units, as well as the processes performed there, are stored with
time components, such as Refa or MTM schedules.
Using these time components, ORion-PI® calculates the required time for
all of the individual processes on the basis of the existing and expected
orders from the warehouse management or ERP systems, in order to
process these orders in the warehouse. The total of the individual process
steps forms the total processing time required. By dividing the total time
into individual steps, when and where in the warehouse which workload
will be required is determined precisely and visually. The necessary
employee hours are then compared against the employees that are
actually available. In this manner, ORion-PI® discovers overlapping
capacity and staff shortages and determines efficient staff scheduling
plans.
The results from practical experience prove that the need for temporary
staff can be reduced by up to 50 percent through the usage of ORion-PI®
Staff Planning & Scheduling and flex-time accounts can be reduced by 15
percent. Thereby, significant cost reduction can be achieved, while
sustaining or increasing the level of service and improving employee
satisfaction.

Highlight: heavy-duty plastic containers
Information:
At CeMAT, the world’s largest trade fair for intralogistics (May 2–6,
Hanover), Meisenheim-based Bito-Lagertechnik Bittmann GmbH will
present a wide range of new products. Among them is a new series of
heavy-duty plastic containers. Measuring 800 x 600 mm and able to carry
loads of up to 500 kg, these containers open up totally new possibilities for
logistics in the areas of production, storage and transport. They are sturdy
and versatile, but much lighter than skeleton boxes or steel containers.
This makes them ideal for lean production. In addition, they can be stacked

battery-driven, remote-controlled shuttle for handling and conveying
pallets in pallet racking. The shuttle moves independently in its lane on
special guide tracks, without being connected to another carrier vehicle. It
organizes loading and unloading operations, ensures continuous unloading
and assumes inventory functions.
Geared to specific market needs
Bito’s development division has also upgraded the “heart” of the mobile
racking system, its control and safety system. Up to now a standard
programmable logic controller (PLC) was used. Now the system has been
thoroughly adapted to the specific needs of the market, given a general
overhaul and brought up to the state of the art. Bito will present the
advantages of this new technology at CeMAT.
At CeMAT Bito will also present new standardized brake rollers for SDS
dynamic carton flow lanes. These ensure that all containers, whether
empty or filled to the maximum, travel in a lane at the same slope. The
slope of the lanes is set for the light container. The brake rollers provide
optimum braking for containers of differing weights, ensuring that they
travel safely and require no extra equipment (hooks).

Highlight: ContiRT20 and ContiRV20
Information:
The ContiRT20 Performance, a pneumatic radial tyre, can be relied on to
move extremely heavy loads at speeds of up to 40 km/h (25 mph). The
new tyre manages to achieve up to 30% greater life expectancy. The tyre
also fulfills greater demands in terms of even wear and suspension
characteristics, without making compromises in stationary stability or
protection against stone trapping.
Developers took into account the heavy stress to which such a product is
subjected later when used in the wood, steel or cement industry, in
shipyards, logistics centres, or in air- and seaports in both indoor and
outdoor applications. The tread depth, for example, was increased to the
maximum to ensure the longest possible service life. The tread pattern
design, featuring wide grooves, guarantees reliable traction at all times
on both surfaced and unsurfaced ground. Rolling resistance was
substantially reduced to ensure low energy consumption, without
adversely affecting driving comfort. The ContiRT20 has high performance
reserves, which make it a very reliable tyre.
The ContiRV20 is a powerful all-rounder for typical airport applications.
This radial pneumatic tire, which is also suitable for use in production
plants, plant engineering and construction as well as in logistics centres,
has three major advantages: Up to 50% longer service life compared with
a crossply pneumatic tire, a maximum authorised speed of 50 km/h,
ideal for transport needs and a greater fuel efficiency and handling. The
reason for these advantages is the specific mix of compounds, the
balanced tread depth, and the ribbed design.
The mix of materials is specifically tailored by Continental to provide
extra efficiency. “It facilitates less rolling resistance, which is 30 percent

less than with a cross-ply tire the same size,” explains Ralf Krieger,
Product Development Manager, Industrial Pneumatic Tires at
Continental. “For each metre travelled, fuel costs are saved and thus CO2
emissions reduced.”
A tough reinforced sidewall completes the components of this balanced
tire whether being used on a tug, tractors or fork lift trucks at airports,
the radial pneumatic ContiRV20 tire moves large loads quickly and
reliably thus protecting the driver and goods to be transported with
maximum comfort.

Info: Logistic faces some major challenges. These include the conservation of the environment and the careful handling of resources. At the same time, supply in urban systems must be secured as individualisation increases and the flow of goods must be maintained. Efficiency is therefore the most important thing. In February of 2010, the EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr won the Leading-Edge Cluster competition of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research to work on those future challenges. To develope the location's leading global position in the field of logistics, the EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr aims to establish itself as a worldwide centre for innovative design of high-quality logistics services. The key issues in the cluster include adaptable logistics systems, goods traffic management and logistical organisation expertise. More than 130 partners are working together on 30 projects, which are based on a support of 40 million Euro and which form the so far most extensive research project in Logistics.
After a period of five years, the projects will have results in more than 100 new products and innovations as well as 4 000 new jobs. Consequently, one aims at tapping a market potential of more than two billion Euro until 2015.
The answers to the major social and economic challenges can be found only by science and industry together. Due to this, the partners of the EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr do have both backgrounds. There are 120 companies and 11 research institutes working together.
Besides research institutes like the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML, the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering ISST, the TU Dortmund and the Centre for Logistics and Traffic at the University of Duisburg-Essen, around 60 small and medium-sized companies belong to the EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr. Strong partners are e.g. Deutsche Post AG, Deutsche Bahn AG, ThyssenKrupp AG or Accenture Deutschland GmbH.

Information:
Active Inverter Technology –
Battery Charging Technology that Pays
The main focus of the fair will be the newly developed Active Inverter
Technology, which Fronius launched a few years ago.
The words on everyone's lips at present with regard to battery charging
systems for electrically-powered forklift trucks are 50-Hz transformer
technology and high-frequency technology (HF technology). 50 Hertz
transformer technology is robust, reliable and inexpensive. High-
frequency technology is synonymous with longer battery service life and
higher energy efficiency, but is more error-prone and not as robust due
to the more sensitive technology it employs.
The Active Inverter Technology developed by Fronius combines the best
of each technology: the advantages of the long-lived and robust 50 Hertz
transformer technology and the efficiency and cost effectiveness of high-
frequency technology.
The subject of cost effectiveness addresses the ongoing operating costs
associated with the charging of traction batteries.
Energy efficiency and sustainability are currently hot topics in
intralogistics and are suggested in the tagline for this year's CeMAT -
"Sustainability in Intralogistics". The subject will therefore be well to the
fore on the Fronius stand.

Information:
A daily chock in efficient production and warehouse logistics is the lack of
transparency and goods/containers that are not be found in the location
stated by the IT system. IdentPro has extended its innovative fork truck
and goods localization tool identPLUS with two new modules:
1. As of now trucks, goods and containers can additionally be located
outdoor with a precision of up to 40 cm.
2. The new module IDEAL allows for identification of cargo without
use of RFID or barcode labels.
For the new outdoor localization IdentPro uses DGPS and an own sensor
for generating precise position data. The position is continuously
calculated directly on the vehicle which makes area-wide availability of
Wi-Fi obsolete. The system automatically switches between indoor and
outdoor localization.
In order to identify goods or containers on the fork truck they needed to
be labeled with RFID or barcode and the truck to be equipped with
respective reader devices. The new module IDEAL allows for automated
identification of cargo that has no labeling at all. The cargo is only once
introduced to the system and then all movements are precisely tracked.
This allows tracking of goods that cannot easily be labeled or where
labeling is economically not reasonable (e.g. pallets). The location of
goods like industrial paper reels or steel coils is now always available with
the new IDEAL module even in chaotic warehouses. Any transportation
order can be automatically controlled. Transparency is rising and the
digital blueprint of the warehouse situation is always correctly matching
reality.

• Brand new: free moving open shuttles
Because of the rising costs of energy and raw materials, and against the
backdrop of the current climate debates, the topic of sustainability is a
particular challenge in the intralogistics sector. KNAPP also pays a great
deal of attention to ergonomic analysis and applies the findings to the
design of the product. From this work KiDesign was developed, an
intelligent design for goods-to-person solutions, fashioned according to
the principles of ergonomics, ergo-dynamics and multi-functionality. In
the OSR ShuttleTM, the customer has a warehouse system especially
distinguished by its energy efficiency. The power requirements are less
than ten percent of the energy consumed by a conventional automated
small parts warehouse.
All-in-Shuttle
Because of the variety of technologies and the design freedom of the OSR
Shuttles™, KNAPP offers systems that are tailor-made to fit the
customer’s requirements. All the main processes, especially storage,
consolidation, sequencing, buffering, picking and handling of returns can
be realized with the OSR Shuttle™.
Premier for Pick-it-Easy
Three different workstations, special solutions for garments in the
fashion sector, and food and retail applications will be presented. The
Pick-it-Easy workstation product family considers a multitude of
ergonomic aspects, with absolutely no loss in performance.
Open shuttles instead of conveyors
In Hanover, KNAPP will be exhibiting the free moving shuttles for the
first time. With further innovation, these open shuttles will have a
lasting influence on the logistics sector. Without rails, the open shuttle
can exit the storage aisles to directly supply the work stations. A
warehouse without a conveyor system is therefore possible, which makes
future solutions highly flexible.

Information:
STILL presents the first ready for series and deliverable diesel forklift
truck RX 70 HYBRID worldwide.
The new RX 70 HYBRID series has a load capacity of 3.0 and 3.5 tonnes.
They feature the lowest energy consumption in their class – another
contribution by STILL to sustainable intralogistics, because a low energy
consumption means less CO2 emission.
For this the RX 70 HYBRID makes use of “free” energy recuperated from
the kinetic energy of the truck when braking.
This energy is stored and accelerates the truck again together with the
diesel engine in the following work cycle.

Additional benefits: The RX 70 HYBRID works more silently and can do
with a smaller engine. Instead of 44 KW the new RX 70 HYBRID only
needs a 36 KW diesel engine to achieve the same turnover. For this,
driving and lift movements are intelligently controlled – supported by an
electrically adjustable displacement pump.
Altogether the RX 70 HYBRID is another module for higher efficiency and
more eco-friendliness.

system for storage and order picking of single items and small cases
complements Swisslog’s portfolio ideally. Besides the new SmartCarrier
and AutoStore, Swisslog also offers the QuickMove conveyor system and
the Tornado stacker crane.
In addition, Swisslog continues to set new standards in energy efficiency.
With GreenLog, a new standard for all products and solutions is
introduced that minimizes the energy consumption of systems and sub-
systems. When Swisslog develops new solutions and products, special
attention is paid to low energy consumption of the systems and
subsystems involved. Swisslog has now introduced the "GreenLog"
energy label which forms a new standard for energy efficiency. It stands
for consistent weight optimization and use of energy-efficient drives,
amongst other things.
SmartCarrier is not the only product carrying the GreenLog label; all
solutions and products in the Swisslog portfolio are classified according
to the new standard. GreenLog ensures that the energy consumption of
the respective technology has been optimally reduced. Beyond the
energy consumption of the individual systems and subsystems the entire
distribution center is taken into account.
Standard GreenLog-certified modules and products will from now on be
used for the design of new systems and facilities. Moreover, existing
systems can be retrofitted with energy-efficient components to meet
Swisslog’s GreenLog standard.

Highlight: ZF cPOWER – continuously variable transmissions
Information:
For the first time, ZF will be presenting a continuously variable
transmission for construction machinery and diesel forklifts - ZF cPOWER
- at the CeMAT Hannover in May 2011. (fig. 2)
Because of rising fuel prices and a raising awareness of CO2-emissions
the market asks for more efficient drive systems. New emission
guidelines (USA-EPA and EU directives) implicate technological
restrictions and constraints with diesel engines that would be hardly
achievable in the future.
High loads at low speeds in combination with high dynamic are the
outstanding requirements for off-road machinery. These criteria are met
optimally by the new ZF CVT transmission technology in an up to now
unthinkable degree of efficiency.
A trend towards lower engine speeds and the demand for engine
stabilization by a constant speed concept are the future challenges on
the off-road machinery market. The continuously variable cPOWER from
ZF meets both requirements.
In wheel loader applications, hydrostatic-powersplit transmissions
ensure significant consumption benefits compared to hydrodynamic
transmissions and purely hydrostatic concepts.
The continuously variable transmissions clearly demonstrate their
benefits in all ranges of the typical wheel loader operating cycle, i.e.
during bucket filling, transporting and loading.

In this process the percentage of hydrostatic power is kept low whereby
an optimal degree of efficiency can be achieved.
Already in the start-up process the bigger part of output comes from the
mechanical part of the transmission and even in very short loading cycles
the utility of the CVT technology becomes noticeable in reduced fuel
consumption.
The application of an elaborate hydraulic transmission-control unit and
transmission integrated on-board electronic optimally completes driving
functions in reference to sensitivity and driving comfort and realizes an
aligned power management.
